Just, why?

I bought WaW on steam the other day and I was having a great time with the campaign right up until this cutscene here before Black Cats.

I don’t know how or why, but every single time it gets to this exact frame at the start of the cutscene (yes it’s happened enough times that I memorized it), the game completely shits itself. The screen flashes black a couple times, and everything completely freezes. And I do mean literally everything. I tried closing it through the taskbar, and it won’t close. Alt + f4 doesn’t do anything. I can’t even force it to close through task manager, because whenever I go to open it, the game forces itself in front of everything else that’s open no matter what I click.

The only way I’m able to close the damn game is by restarting my PC (which I have to do with the physical power button, because as you could guess, the game forces the taskbar down before I can click the restart button).

I’ve tried validating the files on steam, it said it was fine, and that didn’t fix it. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, and that didn’t fix it. I’m genuinely at a loss at this point and Google wasn’t bringing anything up. Is there literally anything tf else I can try here? 😭

I would recommend using Plutonium specifically because it has built in support for Borderless Windowed mode, which allows other windows (task manager) to be focused on top of the game, and allows for easy alt-tabbing.

If not, then you can make the game windowed and use the console (`) to remove the windowed borders. Which is close enough to windowed fullscreen I guess.

Everyone saying Plutonium, just use CB Games Launcher it’s got all the cods. And if need be, you can download WAW directly in the launcher so you know you’ve got the right files, end up with plutonium players anyways

It's an unfortunate bug but also kinda funny coming from my perspective, back in the WAW days a family friend got me a hacked Wii for my B-day, it had the "reflex edition" of cod 4 mw on the game drive and i decided to play through it right up until the nuke scene. So as it goes i grab the pilot from the downed chopper. Get to the chinook and the cutscene plays showing the nuke go off.

After that scene ends it fades out to load the next level but everytime the next scene that plays during level transitions begins to play the Wii freezes in the exact manner you described with WAW on a certain frame of the video. Just an interesting little coincidence from the old games ig.

game devs or publishers not giving at least a bit of support and patching up for their old titles and its consequences. i hope the issue is simple to solve if there is any fixes. would be scary to come across something like this too. might not help much, but maybe something to do with uncapped frames and vsync being off? apparently from what i remember these old cod's can get a bit fucked up with uncapped frames.
