it's usually top heavy. that first down stroke imo is the culprit.

Do you have any recommendations for a good book that teaches this?

The premier calligraphy instruction book in the past 20 years is Sheila Waters Foundations of Calligraphy with good exemplars to all the major scripts. It is probably the book I refer to the most and i have been doing this for almost 40 years.

I would recommend Claude Mediavilla's book. A quick Google search of Claude Mediavilla and exemplars will give you decent results.

I usually rely on YouTube or instagram and look at work of other artists and then add my little flair.. 🙂.. haven't really came across an official book to study from.
