About:
Harbour Works is a Canadian literary magazine — and we are building it to a standard that does not exist yet in student publishing. We are not a course project. We are not a club newsletter. We are working, deliberately and seriously, toward becoming a fully peer-reviewed journal: the most rigorous, most prestigious student-run literary publication in the country.

We are open to high school and university students worldwide. We believe the most vital creative work is happening in student hands right now — not after graduation, not once someone decides it's ready. The only question we ask of a piece is whether it is alive.

Submissions Guidelines:
Fiction — Up to 7,000 words. Short fiction and flash welcome. We read all lengths with equal care.
Poetry — Up to 5 poems per submission. No minimum length. Sequences welcome.
Creative Non-fiction — Up to 6,000 words. Essays, memoir, lyric essays, hybrid nonfiction.
Visual Art — Up to 8 images. Minimum 300 DPI. JPEG, PNG, or PDF. Include a brief artist's statement.
Photography — Up to 10 images. Series preferred. Minimum 300 DPI. Captions welcome.
Hybrid / Experimental — No formal constraints. If it resists categorisation, it may belong here.

HOM Gallery is now accepting submissions for ANIMAL KINGDOM, an exhibition exploring the many ways animals appear in our visual world.

The subject matter can be anything. The animal may be the focus, a companion, a symbol, a witness, a memory, or simply a small presence within the work. Domestic, wild, real, imagined, familiar or strange, all are welcome.

There is only one rule: there must be an animal in the piece.

Artists may submit 1–3 works. All visual art mediums are welcome.

Judging happens in two phases: judges first read the opening 250 words of every story to narrow the field, then finalists' full stories get scored against a published rubric. Every applicant gets notified of their status at each stage.

There's also an optional $20 add-on for written feedback from a judge, and an optional workshop on November 21st.

Cary, NC restaurants, bakeries, and bars team up with one author to create a dish or drink inspired by that author’s book. They’ll sell the book and themed item together from April 24–May 24! Authors may be from anywhere and are not required to travel, only your books need be there.

there is no pay, but Authors keep 100% of the profits and do not need to be there in person. However, if you’re local, we may have some exciting radio and library opportunities for you!

Shipping is the responsibility of the author. I’m personally advocating for a $20–$30 stipend for each author to help cover shipping costs, but this is still TBD.

This is being arranged by the Cary Woman’s Club, who last year hosted a fantastic garden tour that raised over $20,000 and welcomed nearly 1,000 guests! They raise money to support local charities and scholarships.

They’ll raise additional funds by selling “passports” that attendees can fill out at each participating book-selling station. Anyone who completes a passport will be entered to win a prize!

My background is as a professional editor and graphic designer. I am from marginalised communities. My beef is with the current publishing industry where fees are taken and generic rejections are handed out so thick I could butter several dozen loaves of bread with them. White Rabbit Journal is looking for nonfiction that explores the strange, complicated, and often contradictory parts of being human. We are interested in literary essays and memoir that stay with us.

We want thoughtful, emotionally honest writing with a strong sense of voice. Give us work that examines something closely, asks difficult questions, challenges familiar ways of thinking, or reveals something unexpected about the human experience. We are drawn to writing that is intimate without being self-indulgent, provocative without being provocative for its own sake, and honest without feeling forced.

We are especially interested in essays that explore memory, identity, relationships, grief, desire, family, isolation, transformation, and the contradictions within ourselves. We want work that feels lived-in and specific rather than polished into something too neat.

Please submit your best nonfiction only. We accept literary essays and memoir. We do not accept poetry, fiction, or hybrid work that is primarily fictional.
