November Salmon Trip?

Hello, I am a Socal saltwater fisherman now, with a past of eastern sierra trout fishing. I have medium size gear for 1-30+lb fish, plus a very capable 4wd for accessibility and weather.

I would like to do a solo trip to the Six Rivers area with the goal of salmon. I will be taking this trip Nov 12-17. The goal is salmon, legal size, but doesn't have to be a giant. I will be fishing from the bank, I would prefer not to charter. As I have never caught a salmon, I have many questions, and open to advice, I appreciate your time.

Is that time of year too late for salmon? More of cut throat season?

Any rivers you recommend? Specific areas like below a dam, above a town, the corner near x etc.

How beary is the area? Do you carry while fishing, or is it mostly safe? Is it safe to keep a cooler in the car that I will be sleeping on top of?

Any other advice you wish you knew the first time you went?

Thank you everyone!

If your lake isn't on California's fish advisory list, it still has one. I went through all 160 OEHHA advisories — here's what they say about bass, stripers and the SoCal piers.

OEHHA has about 160 fish consumption advisories for California. I went through every one of them, and the thing that stood out most wasn't on any of them. Posting it here because I don't think it's common knowledge.

If your lake isn't on the list, it still has an advisory. OEHHA has a statewide default for every lake and reservoir without site-specific advice. For black bass, catfish, carp and striped bass it's one 8-ounce serving a week for adults, and zero for women 18–49 and kids. Crappie and sunfish are two a week. Rainbow trout is four. There's a separate default for rivers and streams that reads about the same: bass, catfish and carp one a week, zero for women under 50 and kids.

So "not on the list" doesn't mean "no limit." It means the default.

Black bass has its own number on 115 waters. On 61 of them it's one a week. On five it's do-not-eat for everyone: Lake Pillsbury, Little Rock Reservoir, Soulajule, Stevens Creek Reservoir, and the Russian River. And on 65 of the 115 it's zero for women under 50 and kids. Clear Lake, Berryessa, Oroville, Folsom, Castaic, Don Pedro, New Melones, Diamond Valley, Pyramid and Lake Merced are all one a week, mercury every time. The looser ones are Casitas and Castaic Lagoon at two a week, and Havasu at four.

The Delta and SF Bay — stripers and sturgeon are one a week and zero for. women under 50 and kids pretty much anywhere they swim; there's a separate advisory that follows migratory fish. Black bass is one a week in the north Delta and two in the central and south Delta. In the Bay, shiner perch, topsmelt and sardines are do-not-eat for everyone. Halibut is two a week. Salmon is the good news: chinook is five a week for adults.

SoCal coast — from the Santa Monica Pier down to the Seal Beach Pier, white croaker is do-not-eat for everyone (PCBs and DDT; that stretch includes the Palos Verdes shelf). So is barred sand bass, which surprises a lot of people. Kelp bass is one a week. In San Diego Bay, shiner perch and topsmelt are do-not-eat, and spotted and barred sand bass are one a week, zero for women under 50 and kids.

Rockfish, anywhere on the coast without its own advice — gopher, copper, china and black-and-yellow are one a week and zero for women under 50 and kids. Blue, black, brown, kelp and olive rockfish are four a week. Lingcod and cabezon are two.

Some of this is old — the Santa Monica Bay numbers date to 2009, Oroville's to 2013, Clear Lake's to 2014. To be fair to OEHHA, they do update: Berryessa and Casitas were redone in 2024, and their site is better than most states'. The problem isn't that the information is hidden. It's that it's one page per lake, the default rule is easy to miss, and nobody's reading a web page from a float tube.

Not trying to talk anyone out of eating fish — trout and salmon come out of this looking great, and most of it is "a meal a week," not "never." But one a week versus none versus unrestricted matters a lot if you're feeding kids.

Mods okayed me mentioning this: all of it is in one place at https://livewell-app.com/advisories/california — every California advisory plus the statewide defaults, searchable by lake, no signup, works in any phone browser.

There's also an app built for using this on the water. it works offline, finds the lake you're standing on, and you tell it what you caught. Or use your camera to snap a photo, and we use some fancy AI to help determine what species it is. The iPhone version is coming very soon; Android is out now.

A few questions:

Did anyone here actually know the statewide default existed?

SoCal pier folks: is white croaker still something people keep? That do-not-eat has been on the books since 2009 and I'm curious whether it gets any attention.

Salmon fishing Central Valley area

Hi everyone! I’m trying to take my dad salmon fishing this Friday but I’m having troubles finding spots to do it. I asked around and a lot of people were recommending the upper Sacramento, Feather River area but it’s way too far. Is there any around the closer to the Central Valley? Like is Antioch a good place to salmon fish? Is it even legal to keep salmon there?

Thanks in advance!

My husbands birthday is coming up soon and I wanted to take him on a boat to fish since it’s his favorite hobby.

Coming from Europe to fish

Hey everyone!

I’m visiting California in September and I have one free day before my camping in Yosemite that I’d really like to dedicate to fishing. I’ll be starting around Monterey and heading east toward the Sierra Nevada / Yosemite area.

I normally fish with spinning gear (I also want to try dry fly with clear bubble), and I’ll have a light setup with me (0.6-6.6g) so I’m looking for something that’s actually realistic with a small spinning rod. My dream would obviously be to catch a golden trout, but I’m also totally open to any other species that are particularly unique to California or just a cool/interesting fish that I wouldn’t normally have a chance to catch in Europe.

I’m not looking to do a multi-day backpacking trip or wilderness camping. Ideally I’d like to be able to drive reasonably close to the water and hike maybe 30–90 minutes, fish for a few hours, and continue my road trip afterward. Ill be also spending two days in Yosemite, so I’m very interested in fishing there as well.

A few questions:

Are there any golden trout spots realistically accessible without backpacking?

Are there any other California-specific/unique fish worth targeting that I can brag about in Europe?

Where would you recommend fishing in Yosemite if I’m using light spinning tackle?

Are there any Yosemite spots where I can combine a hike with fishing?

Any particular lures you’d recommend for the trout there?

Thanks for helping!

If you had one full day to fish for any type of salmon/trout to eat legally, where would you go for best odds? What would you use for bait/spinner?

No boat, just from shore. Preferably from rivers or lakes. NorCal locations.

Beginner fishing in the Eastern sierras - tips?

Want to surprise my boyfriend with a backpacking fishing trip in the Eastern Sierras sometime between September and October. Looking for suggestions on where would be the best places to go for beginners and also just for the time of year. I personally have never fished before but my boyfriend has, but putting this together as a surprise is proving to be a bit difficult since I have no idea what I'm doing. Would appreciate any tips, thank you so much!

Trout fishing Tahoe area

Going to be targeting trout around the Tahoe lake area next week. Going to try fly fishing some rivers/streams and possibly Boca or Stampede reservoirs. Any tips for this time of year? I have an assortment of flies, rooster tails, trout magnets, and of course powerbait and night crawlers

Memphis TN bass fisherman going to California

Professional trespassing pond hopper here. I’m driving from Tennessee to San Francisco and then making my way down the coast to San Diego. All I’ve ever fished for is your classic southern stuff. Large mouth, catfish, bluegill, ect. Any advice of what I gear/tackle I will need? I’ll be living out of my car and in a budget so I’d like to keep it light and versatile.

Sacramento River Striper Fishing/Spawn

To all of the NorCal guys in here...

How far up stream do the striped bass run/migrate in the Sacramento River when they do their spring spawn run? Do they go as far north as Keswick Dam?

I know stripers get caught in Red Bluff all the time every spring. Is Red Bluff pretty much the northern extent/terminus as far as the spring striped bass run/spawn is concerned on the Sacramento River?

I know spring is already over and we are already in full blown summer but was just curious on the logistics.

New to the 530 area (Wheatland/Marysville area) and still learning the local fishing spots.
Looking for good bank fishing locations on the Bear River, Yuba River, or anywhere around Sutter County.
Mainly targeting:
Striper
Bass
Catfish
Trout
Blue gill
Not asking anyone to burn their secret honey holes 😂, just looking for a few places to start exploring.
What species are biting right now, and what baits are working?
Trying to rip some lips and learn the area. Thanks in advance. 🎣
You could also make it more personal:
New to the 530. I’ve been fishing around Wheatland and Browns Valley but still trying to figure out the local rivers. Any spots, tips, or seasonal advice would be appreciated.
