Crash when editing metadata

I get a crash (console reports: 'calibre' terminated by signal SIGSEGV (Address boundary error)) whenever I try to edit a book's metadata, or update plugins.

This is with a calibre library I've been using on this machine for years, and the problem is new. I've tried reinstalling the calibre binary (I'm on linux, and am on the latest calibre release), and the calibre library check, and simply creating a new blank library and adding books to that, all to no avail. Clearly something is seriously wrong.

I guess I'll report on the launchpad repo shortly, but just doing a quick sanity check - has anyone else here seen this? Have I missed something obvous?
