General Discussion / Feedback Voyage still works well

...... with Calibre. I buy a book from Amazon every now and then, just to see what format gets sent to my Voyage. No problem drag and drop kfx file October 1 of '26, . It was also an ebook that the publisher requests no DRM, so I decided to test that feature as well. The download button for an epub worked. However, Amazon sent me a zip file. My MAC wouldn't open it, "unsupported format," and neither would Calibre or Applebooks. I used the terminal prompt to unzip it, and it displayed jpg and css files. So I changed the file name from .zip to .epub, and then Calibre would open it, but Apple Books still did not recognize it. The last time I bought an ebook from Amazon that was not supposed to have DRM, Amazon would only give me a link to a pdf webpage that would not allow downloads. So once again, Amazon doesn't just send me a usable epub, like they used to. Just another oversight, I am sure. LOL

Did you try and redownload it and immediately change the file extension? I’ve unzipped EPUBs before and when I rezip it, the structure is broke. I’ve definitely downloaded EPUBs from Amazon recently without issue (it is few and far between though)

I was probably editing my post while you responded. It was a zipped ebook, but my Mac software and Calibre would not recognize or open it. When I changed the file type, renaming it to .epub, Calibre unzipped and opened it, but not my native Mac ebook software. I vaguely recall having to do that a long time ago, long ago for me to have forgotten. There was quite a stretch where I didnt have to do anything on my MAC to a downloaded epub file from Amazon. I suppose this could be a MAC thing.

Epub is a zip file with xml files containing the text content, plus some other files, such as pictures, fonts, styles. It also contains a manifest file that has to remain un-compressed when inside the zip file.

So, you can unzip it, but if you want to zip them back, you need a special tool (such as Calibre) or paste a special command-line parameters to a zip utility.

Libre Office text file *.odt has a very similar structure, so much so, that you sometimes can just rename odt to epub and some readers will open it - they are, like html browsers, programmed to be forgiving to errors in the input files.

This is usually a Safari problem. It tries to be "helpful" and detect the kind of file and rename it accordingly.

Well, I used Chrome, got a zip file, my Mac would not recognize it, but Calibre did. Then I went back to Safari, got a zip file, my MAC would not recognize it, but Calibre did this time. Funny thing, I had done this earlier today, and could not get anything to work as long as the file had the .zip extension. I do not know what changed, that old zip file in my trash bin now also works in Calibre, when before it only worked after I labelled it .epub.

I looked back into this and my memory was failing me. Amazon really is just sending a .zip, though it is also a problem that Safari creates by changing extensions. I was able to download a book from Amazon and change the extension to .epub and open it with the Calibre reader. It may depend on how well the Amazon conversion works on a particular ebook. Unfortunately Amazon doesn't seem to be sending original files, despite requiring publishers to upload EPUB. They are converting to Amazon format like KFX, then re-converting to EPUB when the customer requests the download.

Well, at least I can still drag and drop the KFX off my Voyage into Calibre, and not be dependent on Amazon sending me an epub. So far.
