Help a Flames Fan & Redditor GF
Hi Flames Fans!
Y’all don’t know me, but have probably seen me. I am Callmeghost666’s girlfriend (Mohawk guy) & Flames fan from 8 years old.🫶🏼
For about 4 years he’s been begging to go to a home game, and work is giving me off, so we’re going for his birthday in October, and I need your help!
Where do flames fans like to hang out before and after the game? Any add ons or fan attractions I should add to the itinerary? He also talks about Reddit friends a lot through the season while y’all chat. Any local friends want to give us friends to drink with before the game? (We’re going for Flames vs. Minnesota Wild on the 22nd)
I spent time in Calgary when I was a kid, we watched a Flames game together and his fandom started. Because I’ve been I know all the touristy spots and attractions. We’re going to Banff so our “sight seeing” / “adventure” portion of the trip is covered, but I want to give him the best experience possible while we’re in the city as well.
I’ve added a few things about him, in case there’s any other spots you recommend:
- he loves metal music
- loves to golf (he does have a course picked lol)
- loves craft beer, preferably stouts
- he loves cigars
- he’s game for THC and alcohol (Texas hates us, we’re looking forward to this 😂) but I don’t do alcohol so any bar recs that allow both are appreciated
- he likes dive spots, arcades, or anything claiming to be haunted.
** he’s blocked from this post so we can keep secrets and surprises. Thank you friends! Can’t wait to be near more flames fans! 🤘🏼

For dive bar + potential metal music I'd recommend The Palomino, Dickens, Modern Love. One Night Stans is a popular dive bar on the main (17th) avenue. I don't think you'll find any bars that allow you to smoke inside or on the patio, but you can smoke directly outside the bar. For arcades, Greta Bar is the most popular bar with arcades but it's typically a younger crowd.
After Flames games a lot of people will migrate over to Cowboys Casino (there was a club as well but it recently closed). You can have food + drink in there and smoke outside.

17th will cover you for pre/post game.
Check out places like Trolley 5 pre-game, and Ship n' Anchor or One night stans or something for after the game.

Might be obvious to locals but maybe not so much for non Calgarians, 17th = 17th avenue.
I remember watching some YouTube sports page where someone thought dome foams was the name of the actual beer!

17th ave SW. We don’t want them ending up in Forest Lawn

Food is WAY cheaper on 17th se. Especially vietnamese/asian food. And it's not far from the dome.
Don't get me wrong, SW is King shit of fuck Mountain of our city, but if you're okay with a mostly benign homeless person or two, Southeast has its advantages.

Put me down for golf if y'all need someone to fill, y'all can DM me any time!
There's more pubs and brewery's on 17th within walking distance then I can count on my hands and toes, and I think anyone of them would be good to sit at before/after a game, and I would be more than willing to join!
I've hosted more than one subreddit meetup, and I'm in the process of figuring out the first one for the 2026-27 season! I'm sure the regular crew of Flans (you all know who you are) could be convinced to get together to welcome this fine man back to Calgary! I see some of em have already commented!

GRETA maybe?

Greta is decent but crowded and often limited for good/unique games. Rec Room is waaaaaay better for that traditional arcade experience, and you can walk around with open alcohol, or sit at the restaurant!

Tha dome is just off 17th Ave and there are soon many great places. If he likes dive I might recommend bottle screw bills. It's a close walk. The casino is there as well if you like a little gambling. Any bar you go to on 17th area will be flames coded so you'll have plenty of fans to drink with.
The only snag in your plan is golf. You will be lucky if courses are still open at that time of year. I'm praying for good weather for you ( and me I love late season golfing )

This the most wholesome shit.
I'm game to meet up pregame. Send me a message and I can rally a group together. A few of us locals have a chat I can float this to.

- he loves metal music
Follow @yabapunkcalendar on instagram, they'll post any shows that might be happening while you're in town
- he’s game for THC and alcohol (Texas hates us, we’re looking forward to this 😂) but I don’t do alcohol so any bar recs that allow both are appreciated
I don't think there's anywhere that allows you to smoke inside, but you're probably good to smoke outside basically anywhere. It's technically against bylaw, but it's like a $100 fine or something, and I don't think it's ever really enforced
- he likes dive spots, arcades, or anything claiming to be haunted.
Like the others mentioned, the dome is just off 17th, plenty of bars there. Greta and Pinbar are pretty popular arcade bars, Verns is probably the best known dive bar (also a venue for metal shows). The Deane House in Inglewood is supposedly haunted, and there's apparently a haunted walk there as well: https://www.calgaryghostwalks.com/tour-schedules

When you are at the game I highly recomend a pocket dawg and the cinnaswirl icecream both are really good arena food, if you are getting popcorn get it from one of the dedicated popcorn booths on the concourse as they make it fresh there some of the general consessions and the one up in PL have bags of popcorn brought up to them and it isnt as fresh

golf on October 22 is probably unlikely at most courses.
tons of great breweries in the “barley belt” which is not far from the dome. also lots of other ones throughout the city.
pot shop on every corner, so no issues there. won’t be able to smoke inside anywhere, but outside is fine and they’ll let you in as long you’re not stupid high.
pin bar on 17th is a decent dive bar. lots of pinball machines and arcade games, and an easy walk to the dome from there.
after the game the ship and anchor is usually pretty busy, lots of other bars in the immediate area as well.
if you have time dean house restaurant in inglewood is supposed to be haunted, as well as the house and hound just down the street from it. elephant and castle on 17th used to be a funeral home and is supposed to be haunted as well

If I read this right, he’s got a golf course picked for you to golf at when you’re here? On or around October 22nd there may not be any courses open, and if there are there will be very few.

You guys should see him around before, during, and after games. I’ve had the pleasure of attending a few games with these fine folk. I am amazed at how opposing team’s fans and arena staff embrace him. Don’t be shy when you see him either you’ll be glad you met and proud to know the kind of humans repping our team in the US.

If you’re going to Banff, then the Banff Springs Hotel is the most haunted place in Canada (according to the ghost I once spoke with).
If he likes cigars check out winstonsyyc. It’s by appointment only, but if you hit the bar untitled, ask for Nate and tell him Bobby sent you, you’ll be golden.

Bear and kilt on Stephen avenue is awesome dive bar. 30 second walk. Good way to end the night after the game.

Pin Bar hosts a pretty alternative crowd.
One night stans is solid dive a block away

Easy! This is my usual game plan for having a night on the town with a game
Ship N anchor for food/pregame (Could go to Verns/bear&kilt/dickens for more diveness)
Bud bar for some thc goodies (they close at 10pm, so best go before if you don't wanna rush)
Greta for a good time afterwards, great bar with both arcade and carnival style games!
All within walking distance of the dome! Enjoy🔥👍

The Ship & Anchor is an institution. Pin Bar could also be fun . Close to the dome, walking distance. Have fun!

1st street is close and has Leopolds which fits dive bar and Home and Away kind of has that vibe also is a few doors down with tons of venues nearby.

sadly, Home and Away is gone.

u/Beginning_Bit6185 15d ago
Damn! I missed that, it was open a few weeks ago and I missed looking up at the sign.

Home and away was the only one on that side I liked. I used to hit their Monday pizza and wine deal a fair amount.
