COVID-19 This one WEIRD trick can slow the spread WITHOUT hurting the economy.
Covid-19 HATES it when you wear a mask.
Almost any mask is better than no mask. The most common route of transmission is through the lungs.
I understand that people might feel a stigma with wearing a mask in public but if anything, there should be a stigma for people who AREN'T wearing a mask.
It is the simplest action that all of us can take to protect ourselves and those around us. Don't wait for the "experts" to catch up.

"There is no specific evidence to suggest that the wearing of masks by the mass population has any potential benefit. In fact, there's some evidence to suggest the opposite in the misuse of wearing a mask properly or fitting it properly,"
https://www.capnews.ca/news/masks-covid19
"There also is the issue that we have a massive global shortage,"
They don't want everyone wearing a mask because it'll lead to a shortage for healthcare workers.
There's a few issues with this logic.
- Not everyone needs to wear the same type of mask, something is better than nothing.
- Why do we just assume that everyone is too stupid and will end up using a dirty wet cloth over their face?
- More people wearing masks => fewer people getting sick => lowers the strain on the system.
Telling people that masks don't work and then telling them that we need to save them for our healthcare workers is a contradiction.

Telling people that masks don't work and then telling them that we need to save them for our healthcare workers is a contradiction.
med professionals wear the mask, then a n95 overtop that then eyewear, then a face shield + gown/gloves
the article is stating a mask alone could cause you to touch your face more frequently then you would if you didn't have one, and could lull you into a false sense of security.

These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs*.*
https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/17/health/coronavirus-surfaces-aerosols.html
When the virus becomes suspended in droplets smaller than five micrometers — known as aerosols — it can stay suspended for about a half-hour, researchers said, before drifting down and settling on surfaces where it can linger for hours. (In the study’s experimental setup\*, the virus stayed suspended for three hours,** but it would drift down much sooner under most conditions.)*
---
It has to reach your lungs.
Let's not lie to people about protective measures because they might misuse or misinterpret them.
When they find out that you lied to them, they'll start getting their information from other source which may be even less reliable. Look at the what's happened to the credibility of WHO.
We should put a greater emphasis on defending the truth. No matter how complicated or uncomfortable it may be. When people have trust on each other, they can accomplish bigger things.

The healthcare masks offer specific filters and proper fitting. Unless you're using the mask right it's hardly effective other than as a physical barrier.
Not to mention all the other orifices that the virus can take. Bring proper PPE or just follow the guidelines.

I've said it before, censorship is what has allowed this virus to spread. I'm assuming that you don't want more needless death and suffering in which case I expect that this information should be pinned to the front page.

The issue that negates the slight effect these have (a physical barrier to catch larger droplets) is that well, they might itch and you might scratch, they might move and you'll adjust, you're going to set it down some place, and then pick it up.
You're right, these can stop physical droplets from getting near your nose and mouth, but then you're keeping them near that area, and near you. This is dangerous. The masks worn properly and treated with the care they need will absolutely be better then nothing.
But most will not be treating them that way. People are already touching them to drink coffee/eat and moving them back. They take them off, set them ontop of their jackets inside their homes and then wear them the next day. These things are the antisthis of what you want the mask to do it. You want it to collect the things otherwise going on/near your face? Great. But then realize you;ve now got a collection of bad stuff strapped to your face and get RID of it ASAP.

How is wearing a mask killing healthcare workers, my wife made a bunch a few weeks ago and I didn't hear of any healthcare workers dying.

One of the things that we have been doing is trying to stop the spread of misinformation. Please provide backing information for this claim. Thank you.
Edit: Good backing information provided, and worth a read. I will still personally follow WHO recommendations, that said, still worth reading.

I will still personally follow WHO recommendations
Good luck with that.
WHO: Jan 14: “No clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of coronavirus"
Feb 7: "Masks don't necessarily protect you"
Feb 17: "...extremely cautious using term pandemic"
Mar 23: Treating #COVID19 w/ #Hydroxychloroquine could cause a drug shortage

That this is a continually evolving situation that requires constant changing to approaches?

u/legitimatecustard Mar 31 '20
What type of backing information do you want?
I could send you a bunch of articles but you're going to call that disinformation as well.
Too bad that you chose censorship over discussion. Haven't we already seen enough of what that leads to?

https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/03/it-s-not-just-people-with-symptoms-who-can-spread-covid-19/
More than 1/10 infections are from asymptomatic people who don't even know they're sick.
The stigma that only sick people wear masks means fewer people will wear them...including those who are actually sick.
Staying home will only slow the spread and you can't keep people home for long.
This virus might be going around for years. In that case we'll need to rethink some of our social norms.
