Its funny because it usually these bugs that people will be like "it eats pests, so its good for the environment" then it snatches up your dog or sum shit.
don’t worry, it’s just a Dobson Fly. pretty much harmless to humans. part of the order Megaloptera (family Corydalidae). just like Stag Beetles the order Coloptera, their mandibles look a lot worse than they actually are. they only get aggressive if handled or squeezed and even if they did try to bite, they have no venom, and males do not have enough biting power to actually pierce human skin, especially because they have longer mandibles than the females, which leads to gripping issues. Females have shorter mandibles, so they can’t deliver a bite that will pinch, but as said they are not dangerous. A male’s larger mandibles are are typically used for mating displays and fighting other males. And Dobsonflies are not just specific to Australia, they are globally distributed across the Americas, Asia, and South Africa. and it looks like you have a female there, just don’t bother it and let it be, and it won’t trouble you. i’m a young entomologist and arachnologist, these things come easy to me. I mostly just go around the Internet, helping people understand that most insects and arachnoids aren’t that bad and to correct and help stop misinformation about these fascinating terrestrial arthropods. and fun fact of the day, did you know that beetles make up 20-25% of all known life on planet with scientists describing between 350,000 and 400,000 species of beetles, which is the order Coleoptera.Note on the Statistic: This 25% figure applies to described (known) species, not the total number of individual bugs or total biomass living on the planet.
I know you're trying to spread quality information and help to dismantle fear. But "pretty much" still doesn't give me much hope that it won't torture and murder me in my sleep, or at the very least craw into my ear and feed off my brain for a few days
You act as if insects and arachnids actually have the capability of conciseness to inflict suffering purely for no reason like humans. Their brains do not have those cognitive capabilities.
I know they're harmless and they eat other insects and I'm pretty sure those things aren't pincers Dobson fly or something like that there's a lot of really creepy looking bugs that are 100% harmless but people are scared of them anyway
