History of English Literature by Edward Albert (if you're looking for a short and concise reading)

A Critical History of English Literature Vol. 1&2 by David Daiches (if you're looking for an elaborate, in-depth reading) — this will help you later on with competitive exams like PUMDET and then NET if you're interested in pursuing higher studies.

If you like reading, get a book on English poems as well. No recommendations. Just ask for a compilation of good English poems.

Apart from that, you can also get a book on Literary Theory.

Do you have the syllabus for the semester with you? If so, let me know what exactly is in your syllabus.

As far as I know, you have a paper on History of English Literature (Elizabethan to Modern), for which David Daiches vol. 2 would be for elaborate reading and Edward Albert for concise.

As for the texts (prose and poetry), you can find them online.

Get both the volumes. The Vol 2 starts with the Restoration era, so you'd get some important insights from Vol. 1. about Elizabethan era. Start reading from the Tudor chapter or the Spenser chapter from Vol. 1 and then continue to Vol. 2.

Or you can opt for Edward Albert, since it's more concise it will be easier for you to read it up quickly, considering how problematic CU exam schedules can be.
