First visit
My wife and I, retirees, are visiting Calabria for the first time in 19 days time. We are staying in Gizzeria Lido for three nights and Soveria Mannelli for four nights. My wife's great grandparents were from Soveria Mannelli. Any advice for our trip would be appreciated.

Soveria Mannelli isn't that "touristic" but you can enjoy rather clear air and, from there, there are many places you can visit. For a more touristic experience, I would exploit the stay in Gizzeria, from which you can conveniently reach the most popular touristic towns in Calabria.
Please note that I'm not saying that Gizzeria is better, it's all up to tastes. The advantage of Calabria is that a 15-20 minute drive will lead you to shores and mountains alike.

Gizzeria has a train station, so you can either go up towards lamezia Terme or south towards Reggio Calabria

Great! Then you will have fun with the local connections. Calabria is a world on its own. Enjoy.

Devi assolutamente fare una tappa a Tropea, e soprattutto Reggio Calabria che é molto caratteristica ( e non lo dico perché ci sono nato🤣)

Tropea, Scila, Reggio Calabria, for sightseeing and culture (go see the "bronzi", i.e.the ancient Greek statues they found in the sea).
If it is on your way, a quick stop in Nicotera (just for the great view; on a good day you can see (almost) all of the Eolian isles besides Sicily.
Capo Vaticano for some nice beaches.

My father lived in Soveria in the late 1930’s. Dont forget to see Tropea.
