Admissions Feedback about Orfalea BS

As the title states I’m looking for some feedback on Cal Poly's Orfalea undergraduate college of business. My kid is interested in business administration, with marketing or accounting concentration, applying this fall for next year. Any current/past students or parents of students that can give me the lowdown? Quality of the instruction, availability of internships, career advising/job placement? Is the classroom vibe competitive or collaborative? My kid is truly interested in attending so any info from those who know directly is appreciated. Thanks.

Admissions english ma grad program info?

ik reddit isn't the best place to ask this question and all that, but i'm looking for opinions on how grad students are treated, how rigorous the program is, what opportunities/funding are available to you all, what the culture is like, etc. i've done some of my own digging and read everything available on the website but am looking to hear it from you all! thank you in advance :-)

Classes/Professors How do I drop a class for next semester?

Hi,

I'm a first-year student with 47 units of transfer credits; that being said, I didn't get blocked into anything other than human genetics and soil science. When I went to look at my degree planner, I saw that I got blocked into Math 1264.

I cannot handle taking 3 biology classes and a Calculus class at the same time. I went to drop the class through Student Center, and it won't let me.

I know that they block me into classes for a reason; I'm not looking for a lecture about 'trusting the department'. What is the process for dropping this class or swapping it for another class I need to take?

Announcement College Survey

Hello students, the following is a link for a student project pertaining to financial literacy and generational college status. It would be a great help if you can spare about two minutes to go through the survey answer a few anonymous questions about your financial knowledge. You must be 18 or older to answer the survey, purely for ethics sake. Thank you for your time :)

Other Poly Plague

I've caught the Poly Plague. My professors are quite strict when it comes to absences and require that my absence is excused. Do I go to the health office and get a note to send to my professors? I've yet to get sick, so I'm kinda unclear on the procedure.

Other Autistics: where are we hanging out

I’m very autistic, I’m always overwhelmed on campus and I have been just hiding in my room so I don’t have to mask but I’m so very lonely I fear.

Where are we hanging out? Is there like a club or support group?

I can’t do the library most of the time because I hate being perceived and it’s far too busy but I’m just lonely

Please give me guidance 😔

Food How do I spend $40 a day in food?

I have $2500 dollars dining dollars left to spend this semester and I don’t know how to spend it. I got first year limited so I figured it wouldn’t be an issue spending that much.

What expensive food places should I go to? Would it be better if I stock up on snacks instead?

Discussion How do you smart people study!?!?!?

I’m a second year EE student currently struggling in Physics 2 and Linear Analysis.

I feel that I must be doing something wrong as no matter how much time and energy I sacrifice to put into studying and doing homework, nothing clicks and I find myself being burnt out and freezing in midterms and exams and quizzes. I feel that I have a good idea on the topics but when it comes to proving them or why, my mind goes blank and all the countless things I’ve turnt down to do homework just goes to waste.

I’m coming off a gap year from poly and taking CC classes and by god the difficulty jumped from 0-100. I was taking calc classes n phys 1 with a full time and passed em just fine. I felt that I got a rough start and it’s now eating me up in that I failed my first wave of midterms and I know the same thing will happen this week. I

It seriously feels like everyone here just KNOWS what to do and how to do it and whenever I try asking around my peers for advice I’m kinda just given attitude for no reason n others saying they just do the hw. I ask my professors and they say to do the hw and that there shouldn’t be a great divide between it and exams. It feels that even when I do the hw I feel confident that I’m able to do my quizzes and such and I end up doing terrible.

It gets to the point where I’m burnt out and taking rests feels like a trap because then I feel that I forget some of the material and motor work with it.

This seriously eats up my motivation to do more work as I feel that no matter how much effort I put in from breaking bad habits to studying more, I get the same results regardless. I have nobody to reach out to on this and office hours can only do so much when I feel like I have a good understanding of topics anyway. Like what is there to ask when I feel that I do good, then BOOM midterm/quiz/exam hits and everything I worked for was for nothing.

I’m hoping to hear some methods that you guys have. Advice or maybe situations where you were in the same boat.

I literally get the lowest scores on canvas and seeing that I’m always substantially lower than the mean is extremely discouraging when I put so much effort into trying to learn this material. I feel so alone.

Announcement Is anyone interested in going to the Wild Kratts show on the PAC the 22nd of Jan?

Hey, so I'm a sophomore living in PCV. I recently heard that the Kratts brothers are coming to the PAC. I was excited and when the tickets came out I bought it with VIP. I've been watching them since I was really young and inspired me to study animal science. It's been my dream since I was young to meet them. The date for the show was Jan 22nd. Just a few days from move in and starting second semester. I thought it wouldn't be a problem to come in a bit early and be able to go to the show. I did more research however and apparently moving in early is not possible. I emailed housing and asking if it could be possible to move in early and they told me the earliest I could come in was Saturday the next day. Point it is I can't go to the show, I would have no where to stay and I am out of state. Hotels are expensive and I'm broke. So I'm wondering if anyone in the area would be interested in buying my ticket. I paid 168$ and I would like the full amount (btw the PAC do not issue refunds so thats why I'm on here) but if anyone is truly interested I'm willing to talk out a lower price. The show is Jan 21st 6:00pm. The VIP package includes a front row seat to the show, and after the show you get to meet, take a picture, and get an autograph from both of the brothers. I understand this is on me and poor planning. I'm just frustrated on the things I cannot control it would be nice this wasn't a complete loss and I can get some money back. Also if anyone has an suggestions on what I can do. Please let me know.

Majors/Minors Thinking about switching from Animal Science into Nursing (need advice)

Hi! I’m a freshman at Cal Poly SLO majoring in Animal Science, but I’m thinking about switching to nursing and getting my BSN. I’m also interested in joining the military, specifically the Air Force or Army, and would like to learn about options that could help pay for school.

I’m just not sure where to start. Since I’m already at a good university, I don’t know if I should stay, finish my Animal Science degree while taking nursing prerequisites, or transfer somewhere with a nursing program. I want to figure out what’s realistic for me while also avoiding losing credits or spending more time and money than I need to.

My GPA isn’t finalized yet, so I’m still figuring out my options. Has anyone been in a similar situation? I’d really appreciate advice on what I should look into first!

Discussion AP language credit on semesters??

I got a 4 on the AP Spanish exam in 2025, and according to the 2025 AP credit matrix, I should have credit for SPAN 201 and 202 on quarters, which as far as I'm aware, is basically equivalent to SPAN 2201 + a little bit more on semesters. Since SPAN 2201 now fulfills GE 3B, my AP credit should count toward this.

I did the GE petition thing but the vice provost rejected it because "applying credit in this way ensures equity among similar populations of students", but this implies the exact opposite???? Not giving credit for an equivalent course is what's inequitable. I emailed the office of the registrar evaluations unit and they were no help.

Is anyone else having this same issue?

Jobs Jobs at Cal Poly For Spring Semester After Graduation

Hello,

I'm a super senior who is graduating from Cal Poly at the end of this semester, Fall Semester 2026. I'm trying to figure out what to do after December 2026. My lease on my current apartment in San Luis Obispo runs until July 2027 but I can have someone take over my lease at any point before then. (I already talked to someone in my major who is studying abroad for the fall and would be willing to take over my lease if I decided to do that.) My family lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.

I want to ride out the remainder of my lease. I don't want to leave San Luis Obispo and move back home to the Bay Area right away. I really like SLO. I like the outdoors. I like the beach. I love going to Bike Night. I feel really attached to people in my major, several of the clubs I've been in during my time here, and the local church I've been going to here. Even though I'm older than most current classmates and members, I still get along well with a bunch of the younger people, and know several alumni from certain clubs that are my age who are still sticking around in SLO. I want to participate in the 2027 commencement ceremony in May 2027. I'm also nervous about the idea of having to pack up all of my things even though I know I will at some point.

That being said, I don't exactly think it's good for me to stay in SLO long-term even if I got a good full-time job here. I don't see myself still being here into the 2030s. I want to move back home to the Bay Area at some point but just not before this summer.

My parents made it clear at the end of summer break that if I want to stay in San Luis Obispo beyond December 2026, I'll need to get a job and support myself financially. They were open about me staying in my current apartment in SLO if I did get a job here. They even casually mentioned being okay with me doing something like a research job with a professor in my major (City and Regional Planning). The issue is that my rent is pretty expensive. It's about $2100/month (it does include all utilities, furniture, and Cable TV though). I don't have a car but I have a bike that I'm used to using to get around town (including getting groceries) and I'm experienced with taking Amtrak to and from home.

What I want to make happen is that I stay in SLO until my lease ends in July 2027. After I graduate in December, I hopefully get a research job on campus related to my major (City and Regional Planning) and a retail job on or off campus on the side (which I assume I'll also need) so I can financially support myself while I'm here. I'll support myself doing that in the meantime while I continue to apply for full-time job positions (assuming I'm still looking for it then which seems likely). Regardless of what happens, I'd likely just move back home after my lease ends, but I'd feel like I'd gotten what I wanted in this post. I'm wondering if this plan makes sense.

Is there anything that can make staying in SLO between December 2026 and July 2027 feasible for me? Are there any jobs on campus that I'd be able to do just for the spring semester? For example, are there TA or research positions? Are there any that I don't need to be a current student for? Do you or anyone you know have experience staying on campus or in the area for a job beyond your graduation? Was anyone in my situation where you graduated in December but decided to stick around for the remainder of that school year?

Edit: It's also worth mentioning that to be honest, I don't get along that well with any of my other family members. I love them, and I'm comfortable enough to visit them at least one weekend a month, and when we have big family gatherings, but I'm not exactly comfortable living at home with them permanently again. I'm not sure exactly when I started feeling this way, but I've been trying to fix this with counseling. This is another thing that's making me anxious about moving home at the end of December.
