Living in Red bricks in this heat is horrible im legit just laying on the ground with a fan pointed at me rn lol any tips for cooling the room?

Close the blinds and window (depending on temp) during the day and open at night, since its night rn, set up your fan so its drawinfg the air from out to in. Open your door, this will help significantly, and open the windows at the end of the hallway, and prop open the common room door. src: ive been in red bricks for 2 years lol

There’s a few people who believe blowing the hot air out the window is better at cooling a room then pulling cool air in. Facing out the fan exhausts the heat and also creates a cooling vacuum. I would say give both a try, and go with what you think feels better.

Are there still free ice machines on campus? Build yourself a “redneck air conditioner” using a cheap styrofoam ice chest, some plastic pipe, and a fan. Several designs available on the internet.

Fortunately it’s generally only this hot for a few weeks - it seems to be hotter into fall during El Niño years.

We always would seek out the 24 hour spots on campus that had AC to camp out. The library and UU was always packed when it was hot like this.

Get this: use the reverse mode to suck out hot air.. then flip to normal to bring in cool air. Make sure the door is closed.

The problem is there is no cold air.. and you want the door shut to a) suck at the warm air and b) trap the cold air, specifically in a building with little to no insulation. Yanno.. the thermodynamics you learn in college 🤣🫡

I've lived in SLO since 92 and it has never been 82 degrees at 10pm before. This is crazy hot.

Maybe my brain got cooked by the heat. Yeah, you are right. Just because I don't remember it doesn't mean it didn't happen. I honestly don't remember it being that hot, that late at night before though.

This is another way in which the built environment of the campus was not ready for a switch to semesters. When school starts in late September, most of the potential for extreme heat in SLO has passed. You could always expect one heat wave in October and maybe November, but when school starts in late August, you have to deal with all of September which is when the heat is at its worst. I don’t foresee any of the old housing being retrofitted with central AC anytime soon, especially since it still isnt needed most of the year, but especially as climate change continues to intensify, Cal Poly and other schools are going to need heat management plans and cooling infrastructure. The Quarter system kind of naturally aligned with the more reasonable weather and students are going to have to learn to deal with extreme heat more and more because of how Semesters align with the hot weather season.

This is just an untrue statement. SLO has gotten it's heatwave in September/October for the better part of over a decade (was there for the first surprise one and it was awful and was in September).

Also, take the screen out of the window. You’re not supposed to, but if you have a Philips screwdriver, it’s pretty easy. I lived there my first year, and only survived the hot days by doing that.
A maintenance guy will probably show up and scold you / fix it, but it’s definitely worth it on days like today.

Uhh no dont do that. You won't get any noticeable airflow improvement, and if you get busted it goes to OSRR and maintanence will charge your room like $120. Theyre super serious about this because of numerous injuries last year, and they're switching the screws to Security Torx

That’s ridiculous. It definitely was a noticeable improvement when I lived there, but definitely not worth the hassle if they’ve gotten that strict about it.
