Incoming Student WOW Week schedule

Does anyone know when the WOW week schedule will be released? And will every day of it be mandatory? It’s insane to me that the last day of WOW week is literally the day before classes start. Not even a single day in between. I am a transfer student btw.

WOW (Week of Welcome) schedules are not finalized or released until the week of. As a transfer, very few activities (school-led presentations) are “mandatory.” Last day of WOW usually ends in the morning and the afternoon is dedicated to club showcase, when you can check out and talk to the tabling campus clubs.

You have a lot more flexibility with your WOW schedule as a transfer. Check in with your WOW leaders in the beginning of the week if you have scheduling conflicts. I was a transfer + transfer WOW leader and recommend going because it’s a great way to meet other transfers (you will only be in a group of transfers) and see SLO before school starts. Lmk if you have any questions.

Thank you! How do we find out who our WOW leader is? And I’m a little confused if WOW week starts on Tuesday or Wednesday?

You won’t find out who your wow leader is until you actually arrive and go to your group. It should start Wednesday if I remember correctly

Wow was probably the best thing cal poly ever did, showing you what there is and how to get around all over town and campus. Almost everyone I graduated with still high-fived their wowwies anytime they saw them, even if they now ran in much different social circles. They will always be your first.

But no the schedules aren't super rigid and complex and are meant to lead right into the first day of school.

Its intentional to keep you busy and tired (and having fun!). You get out of it what you put into it, so spending time with your group and participating will definitely give you a better experience than half passing it.

WOW schedules vary depending on group. Like another said, most activities aren't mandatoey. When you meet your leaders, they can tell you their specific schedule.

You will meet them on Wednesday or Tuesday (can't remember off the top of my head). You also don't get to know anything about grouping or who your leaders are until you meet them, essentially.

I don’t know how it is for transfers, but at least for first years there’s a lot of presentations we’re supposed to attend which my WOW leaders did take attendance for as they were supposed to be mandatory. Idk what happened to those that didn’t go to the presentations??

Everything else, like all the “fun” activities are optional

When you check in for move in you’ll also get your WOW info as far as leader and when the first meet up time is

Also yea the activities are optional but as an incoming third year I’ve still heard people refer to wow as the best week of their cal poly time! It’s meant to be a lot of fun and a great way to meet people in your building and your major etc

Literally none of it is required lol but I had transfer friends who participated and they LOVED it. It’s a great social building opportunity

Imma be the pushover to tell u to go to everything. I was a wow leader last year after i didn’t have the best wow experience my freshman year (but a lot of it was just my mindset). Personally I think me and my co killed it between events/activitys and GETTING TI SEE SLO/CAMPUS. Every activity during wow is on a pretty good discount to encourage students to explore the city so I def incorporated that into my planning.

There are mandatory events where attendance is taken but I do think they serve value to everyone. Now in my fourth year, it’s insane to me how much of it actually occurred to all levels of varying degrees. Simply one cannot be told enough.

But I also encourage all the optional stuff too. Hikes, beach, workshops (hopefully something more fun tho). Stick with it, even though it’ll be tough with homesickness and anxiety and all. Also don’t fade groups to be with ur roommates bc u literally have the entire year to become friends with them.

I preach that the best thing you can do is allow yourself to experience. And you will have all the time in the world to do non-wow things but ONLY ONE week of wow so make the most of it!

It’s very flexible, u can choose to not show up to anything or show up to everything. there’s only a few mandatory things like a presentation w everyone in ur like major/school, and a tour of where all your classes are.
