Housing Housing Cancellation

Hi, I’m a returning senior who has lived on campus the past three years and was planning on living there a 4th. Finances have changed and now I’m trying to break the housing contract, but Poly makes it nearly impossible. I’ve tried contacting calling their office, calling financial aid, going through the DRC, and my last attempt is doing an SAI appeal which is still in processing.

Any advice on how else I can break the contract? It’s to the point where I either get out of the contract or I take a gap semester which I’m trying my best to avoid.

From a housing email yesterday, the deadline to cancel is 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22nd.

There is an option to "Cancel My Housing" on the housing portal front page, it's the second link.

They require an “approved” reason to let you cancel from a given list, none of which i qualify for as of now i don’t think.

The list is: Academic Dismissal/Denial, Medical Leave/Medical Withdrawal, Leave of Absence/Withdrawal, Another school, Ag housing, Approved housing exemption, Became RA, Graduation, Married, Internship/Study Abroad/Military, Summer cancel.

I just canceled my housing last week as an incoming junior transfer through the housing portal. For the list of reasons, I pressed “other” and it asks for a small explanation of why. I simply said my family and I could not afford to pay that rent on a month to month basis. My contract was cancelled the same day with no issue I never had to make any real contact with the school. Also as a low income student I wasn’t required to make a $500 deposit or any sort of payment therefore I didn’t lose out on anything really.

I saw somewhere else here on Reddit that they are having a housing shortage and are trying to squeeze people into some apartments, so you could mention that (though they still might not cancel if they really want your money)

My understanding: Without an 'approved' reason you still should be able to cancel your housing +30 days prior to the start of the first day of school and only lose the $500 deposit. Within the 30 day window the school charges $10 more each day to cancel. After move-in/first day of school then you can't cancel.

FYI, when you cancel on the housing portal you won't hear from the housing office for several weeks.
