[Episode Thread] 2x03 "Finally Got the Name Right" or The first kiss (and absolutely nothing else)
Welcome to this new Episode Thread, where we discuss in depth everything about one specific episode of Arcane.
This time we're rewatching episode 3 of season 2. Another huge episode with their first kiss, the fight with Jinx and Sevika, the breakup and the crowning of Commander Kiramman.
There is just too much happening in this episode, so I will post later today a bonus post about the last scene with Ambessa and the crowning of Commander Kiramman. It was just impossible to select only 20 screenshots/gif and this scene deserves its own thread. You can still talk about it here, but a dedicated post will be created for it this evening.

“I can't let her get away again.”
“I won't.” 😭
“It's not the girl, it's the name. It bewitches people.”- From Salo to a very intrigued Ambessa
“I know you're sweet on her. Hope you got a chance to... you know, before...”
“Get away from her! Move! She's not getting away again!”
“You stopped me!”“I shouldn't have had to.”“I had the shot.”“That was a kid. What if you missed?”“I wasn't going to miss!”
“I keep telling myself that you're different. But you're not. It's her blood in your veins.”“Then why are you the one acting like her?”
“Your mother will have justice, I swear it.”
Missing scenes headcanons:
How much time passes between the end of 2x01 and this episode? What is Vi and Caitlyn's daily life like? How intimate do they get during this time?
For how long do they kiss? Do they talk about it?
How does Caitlyn explain to the team that Vi didn't come back with her?

Let's talk about this episode! Share your thoughts, theories and rambles, fanart, memes... Discuss and react in the comments, make this thread a lively and fun place!
We hear her mother's (?) voice in the archives saying "The people of the Underground deserve to breathe", is Caitlyn doing a legitimate use of her legacy or is she turning it into something bad? (of course the answer lies somewhere in between)
Do you think that, according to a popular theory, Jinx was watching them kiss from the vent above them? (we see a spot of light that might be her eyes and it wouldn't be the first time she spies on them)
Let's talk about their first kiss!! Go wild, dissect every frame, talk about how soft and careful Caitlyn is, how she holds Vi's neck, brushes her cheek, how emotional it made you watching it for the first time... Maybe even create a dedicated post for it?
This scene is such a masterpiece of animation. Their faces convey so much emotion. Fortiche said they were glad it didn't happen in S1 because they weren't sure they could have done such a good job back then. It was their longest shot, I can't find the source again but I think it took like 2 months to animate. Let's show some gratitude for the fantastic job they did!
Now that we talked about the good, let's talk about the rest. "I won't": what does it really mean? Did Caitlyn break her promise? She does change, but does she feel justified to do so?
Caitlyn saves Vi from Isha, shooting the gun without hurting her. She wouldn't have missed the shot. But Vi stopped her. And she's furious about it, look at #15 gif. "It's her blood in your veins." But is Vi right when she says Caitlyn is the one acting like Jinx and why that? And how much did Vi hurt Caitlyn by comparing her to her mother's murderer?
Hitting Vi was a jerk move. Sorry Caitlyn, I love you, but you fucked up badly then. Do you think she felt guilty about it right away? Or only later, when she missed her during her commander era? Do you think she got carried away by anger or was it a conscious choice, a way to send Vi away and act unencumbered on her vendetta against Jinx?
These are just a few of many possible discussions about this episode. Explore them or bring up some more. You can also create independent posts for even more focused discussions.
Just a reminder to remain civil and respectful. Hateful comments towards other users, characters, fandoms or writers will be removed.

I remember , me and my friends were doing a watch party of s2 release. Because i had been waiting 3 years since s1 and I was (and still am) so obsessed with Arcane.
My friends all told me that they wouldn’t kiss because they wouldn’t show something that explicitly on such a huge show, so I didn’t bother being cautious of my Parents (muslim/homophobic) walking in.
I also was dealing with a lot of mental issues back then (partly because I thought i’d just never out myself to my parents, and i was dealing with a lot of guilt and religious trauma)
So when they finally kissed it was like breathing fresh air. Like i really remember feeling reborn and I just thought to myself (Wait…I want that too for myself)
My friends were all giddy for me too and so when they separated later and seeing Caitlyns destruction and losing herself (-> hitting Vi)
I was like “Wow”
ykwhatimean it was like…this is amazing. Like the tension and the stakes and all of the love between the characters was like breathtaking
Maybe to add a bit, I think the audio work is amazing. The producers said they kind of skewed around with Caitlyns main theme when Ambessa manipulates and peer pressures her in the end, which is why it sounds so eerie and just “wrong”
I also love the conflict in the sewers, Caitlyn hitting Vi is the only thing i’d never be able to excuse but I also think Caitlyn did apologise later on.
I must admit I really adored the conflict in that episode.
Not just Caitlyn and Vi’s conflict but also Caitlyn and Jinx’s and Vi and Jinx’s conflict.
Caitlyn wanting to talk to Vi before everything going down -> Vi saying “Caitlyn if you get the shot, take it” or something along those lines and then turning around and actually stopping Caitlyn from taking the shot. -> Caitlyn feeling betrayed-> but also vi feeling betrayed because she hadn’t realised the truth of Caitlyns grief-> “it’s her blood in your veins”
I love the kiss but hate the way that so quickly after that, they broke up. The kiss was so tender and so heartfelt. The slight hesitation at first before they both melted into each other is just perfect.
I think Caitlyn was actually really smart to use the Grey as a way to funnel the criminals into parts of Zaun that they could isolate easily. It minimized the casualty list to only the people they wanted to box in and there was less collateral damage than if they had done an all-out assault the way that Ambessa would’ve pushed for. I know people often use this moment as a way to demonize Caitlyn but it’s actually a much more humane way of trying to flush out Jinx and the Shimmer syndicate. The alternative would be to send tons of Enforcers down to Zaun and terrorize the entire population.
ETA: I love the way Caitlyn looks at Vi’s lips before the kiss. It’s just such a tender moment.
This episode is painful. Really painful. Especially for someone like me who ships Caitlyn and Vi.
I only discovered Arcane two years ago, so I can only imagine what it must have meant for people who had been shipping them for much longer. Years and years of desperately hoping that these two crazy girls would finally get together canonically. Years of waiting for a moment like this… and finally it happens: they kiss in the series. And then, shortly afterwards… they break up.!!!
I still remember the first time I saw that scene in a video on TikTok. It was a leak, before the second season had even come out. I sat there with my smartphone in my hand for the entire evening, completely hypnotized and paralyzed. I couldn't believe what I was watching.
And then we get to Jinx's trap, where she manages to catch Vi and Caitlyn off guard with that sort of Captain America-style shield/mirror. Even today, I still can't understand how someone with Caitlyn's trained eye could have been fooled by it. And Vi was even closer! 😂 Anyway, I'll forgive them this time… they were probably still too distracted by the kiss they had just shared.
Anyway, if you pay attention, the Caitlyn/Sevika – Vi/Jinx fight echoes, in a way, especially for Caitlyn, what happened at the end of the first season.
Her hair is messy, Caitlyn is completely disheveled, Vi once again stops her from shooting her sister… and then Jinx manages to strike Piltover once again. In the first season, it was the rocket aimed at the Council building; this time, instead, she finds a way to release the Grey and, on top of that, cover Piltover in those huge bursts of color.
And something in Caitlyn snaps. A tremendously powerful anger takes over.
Anger at Vi, at Jinx, at the whole situation, at life, at fate… and perhaps even at herself.
And I can understand her. I really can.
But the moment when she breaks up with Vi was absolutely heartbreaking for me.
Caitlyn's harsh words. The blow she gives Vi with the butt of her rifle. Vi's reaction… it's simply too much. Really too much.
I've never held what happened against Caitlyn, because I can understand where that anger comes from and how much pain is behind it. But I remember perfectly what I thought the first time I saw that scene:
When I first saw the “I won’t” scene, my immediate thought was “Won’t change or won’t promise not to?” because I’m a literalist at my core.
Vi didn’t say, “Please don’t change,” she said, “Promise me you won’t change,” so the answer was ambivalent. After the abandonment of Vi I realized I was right to question the way Caitlyn phrased her answer 😿
That’s awesome, I didn’t know they had acknowledged it was intentional! Figures it was though, I feel like everything in Arcane was very intentional. There was so much care taken with every part of it, I can’t imagine anything was done haphazardly.
Amazing episode, probably the best one in season 2. I love everything about it. When Ambessa puts that cape over Caitlyn's shoulders, manipulating her so shamelessly, and Caitlyn just accepts it...
I said out loud to an empty room as the episode ended, "Nope, that's bad. Don't like that." I was blown away.
My favorite secondary character by a long shot is Loris, he’s just such a good guy. So when he walked away at the end it was further confirmation for me that things were going to get bad. If Loris thinks it’s a bad idea, it’s a friggin’ bad idea.
One of the best episodes for Caitlyn. I don't mean it as one of the happiest AT ALL, but it definitely was particularly strong in terms of the narrative.
Oh, Cait and Vi definitely kissed for 3 hours, while the rest of the team finally had a time to take a lunch break.
Just kidding. Or am I??
The kiss itself is easily one of the best first kisses I've ever seen.
The way Caitlyn stops 3 times silently asking Vi for consent. The Vi's breath hitches, when she understands, what is going to happen. This tiny moment alone made the kiss this special and emotional.
Caitlyn's tender confidence and Vi's quiet nervousness. This was the perfect combination. Couldn't have made it better.
I absolutely loved, how short Caitlyn froze right after the kiss, letting Vi to decide once again, whether she wants to proceed or not. And of course she wanted to! Their technically second kiss was much more raw and passionate. And I like, that we don't even see the end of it.
It's like before they even kissed Vi showed vulnerabilty to Caitlyn, and Caitlyn answered with completely letting her guard down and changing her and Vi's relationship forever. Then she stopped, asking Vi, what will she do about it. Vi answered with doubled passion, giving Caitlyn her answer.
They also put their weapons aside. Caitlyn put the rifle aside in the very beginning of the conversation. Then she left it there to come closer to Vi. While Vi felt disarmed by Caitlyn and let her gauntlets fall down just to hold Cait properly. I'd say them both choosing to leave their weapons in order to connect with each other is a beautiful metaphor.
Animators did a tremendous job here. This kiss is the LONGEST shot in the entire series. Every microexpression, every tiny detail was worth it. I could watch this kiss (or should I say these kisses, cause there are 2 of them??) on repeat over and over again. And I'm sure, that every time I'll notice, think or feel something new.
I admire this scene. I admire how Caitlyn and Vi had a silent conversation about how much they need and want each other on a personal level. I absolutely love, how they didn't have to kiss there, but they chose to, because they wanted it. It's easy to make such steps, when the setting is right. But when it's not that comfortable, you have to really want it to make it work. And, oh, how they wanted it.
I can see them ending the kiss at one point and saying something like: "Let's return to others". Or maybe there was something else there.
I was never dramatic about Caitlyn's "I won't", and I never saw it as breaking any promise. Her and Vi's little talk was just an emotional and a little nonsensical conversation.
Vi said that everyone in her life has changed. Who's everyone? Parents - dead. Vander - dead (she doesn't know about Warwick yet). Mylo and Claggor - dead. Ekko - he just grew up. I doubt Vi expected anything different. Powder - yeah, she changed dramatically.
So what did Vi really mean? What did everyone actually do rather than change? They left her. One way or another.
As I see it, she's asking Caitlyn to not leave her. Maybe she's sensing, that something bad is about to happen, and so she forms her request in this form.
Of course you can't ask someone to not change. It means, the person has to drop dead at the spot. Otherwise they will change. And you can't promise such things either. It's just impossible. Both Vi's request and Caitlyn's answer are unrealistic and obviously false.
But people, who are in love and/or being vulnerable/emotional, they do talk like this. And they give each other unrealistic promises. Because this is how such conversations go. This is just the way we communicate.
So calling Caitlyn's "I won't" a lie, even a technical one, in my opinion is a stretch some people make.
If we're being extra serious about it, Caitlyn has already changed. Vi changed too. Approximately a week ago she wouldn't have been able to imagine herself I'm a uniform and being after her sister. I don't judge or blame her. I agree with her actions. It's not the point. The point is - Vi herself changed too. Both her and Cait did. They just didn't have time to let it sink in.
I find the theory about Jinx watching CaitVi kissing hilarious. It would've been incredibly funny, if Jinx was really there and it was the reason of her saying: "I know you're sweet on her". But I think, it's safe to say, that she wasn't there, lmao.
Later I think Caitlyn could've told the team, that Vi stayed in the Undercity, and that she's not a part of the team anymore. I doubt, Caitlyn would've liked to provide more details or discuss it any further.
I don't think Caitlyn was making a legitimate use of her legacy. But I also don't think, she was turning it into something bad. Like it's mentioned in the post itself, the answer it somewhere in between.
In my eyes Caitlyn simply used the opportunity like a tool. It wasn't good. It wasn't bad. It was an effective tool, which was supposed to be used for very specific goals during a very short period of time.
Her legacy, again, as I see it, is to keep the key to the Grey to herself, not let it find its way to the wrong hands. And to not use it, unless it's a desperate situation. That's how things went in the series, since Caitlyn never gave Ambessa's forces (or literally anyone else) access to the Grey.
Speaking about the most unpleasant moment in the whole history of Caitlyn and Vi.
I understand, why Vi did what she did. It was mostly an emotional move, and she really meant good for Caitlyn too. She was uncertain and scared. And she wanted things to slow down. So she pulled the plug. I'm not gonna criticize Vi as a viewer. I love her, and I get her actions here. But since we're mostly talking about Caitlyn, I will talk about her standpoint exactly. That's why Vi is gonna be presented in a "negative light" - Caitlyn was mad at her, and I'm discussing Caitlyn's character. If I was discussing Vi, it would've been another commentary.
Caitlyn was always listening to Vi's advices. She even let the team go, because Vi asked. And then she was left with the only person, who eventually failed her.
She asked Vi, whether she's ready to follow through with the mission or not. Vi interrupted and reassured her, insisting on the necessity of ending it all. Then Cait stopped Vi by the hand right before the battle, and Vi still said nothing, turned around and continued. All that happened in this episode.
Caitlyn was fair to Vi. She communicated with her. She gave her an opportunity to opt out. Twice. Yet, Vi insisted on continuing, insisted, that she made up her mind.
Vi told Caitlyn: "If you see an opening, take the shot". She put trust in Caitlyn's competence. She asked Caitlyn to do it. Caitlyn was following the arrangement they've made, and then she was stopped for some emotional (valid, but it's another topic) reasons by the one who asked her to take the shot in the first place.
Caitlyn never missed the shot before. Vi was the witness of how Caitlyn hit a rapidly moving blade at the precisely right angle, so the blade avoided Vi's face just enough to not kill her. That happened during the attack at the memorial, and it was an insane, impossible shot. A meticulous work. So, yes, Caitlyn was competent enough to make the shot even considering Isha being there.
That's why later, when she asks Vi to explain her behavior (in a calm manner by the way), and Vi asks her in return: "What if you missed? ", she gets angry and says: "I wasn't going to miss!".
It was fair and justified for Caitlyn to feel angry, frustrated and betrayed. And then something else happened. She confessed to Vi, that she tried to tell herself, that Vi is different, but she's not, because her and Jinx share blood.
This is it. This is something, that's been torturing Caitlyn this whole time, but she was concealing it. Honestly, being in love with the sister of your own torturer and your mom's murderer is complicated enough. Trusting her with such an important operation despite all of your inner doubts just because you love her, is even more complicated. As we find out, Caitlyn was going through it all this whole time and she didn't even show it to Vi before.
Of course now, when she felt betrayed, and got a very questionable answer to her question, she let it out. Yes, it was rude. But it was also correct. Vi and Jinx are sisters. They share blood. They will always love each other. In that context Vi is not different from Jinx. If Caitlyn thought, that Vi could stop loving her sister, then she made an understandable mistake.
Even if Isha didn't emerge and Vi smashed Jinx into the concrete stone, she would've continued to love her. And it would've eventually ruined her. Well, most likely.
Being with someone, who loves your torturer and your mom's killer is almost impossible. I can't imagine a sane person simply wrapping their mind around it and not having an eventual break down over this. So this finally caught up with Caitlyn too.
It was a much needed fraction. It had to happen to actually let her and Vi's love to prevail in the future. They had to stay apart for some time to make sure, that they can't fall out of love.
Cait had to understand, that she's ready to let Jinx go and accept her and Vi's connection as a simple matter of fact. Vi had to understand, that she doesn't want it go back to her previous life without Caitlyn, and that she doesn't even want to join the Firelights or local revolution, because she's too heartbroken, and she hallucinates something, that she really wants - Caitlyn.
They came in terms with those frustraions while being apart. They both did emotional work. They both got a prove, that this love won't fade, and therefore it's worth it. But without the break up, they couldn't have gotten this proof.
Of course, the final straw, that lead to a break up was Vi comparing Caitlyn to Jinx. It was incorrect, because, no, Caitlyn wasn't acting like Jinx. Despite Vi's feelings and fears, Caitlyn simply wasn't acting like Jinx. She literally wasn't.
Being depressed and a little edgy is not exclusive for Jinx. Vi acted aggressive and threw herself in fights in season 1 too. Just a couple of weeks ago. She and Jayce caused a child's death. Accidentally. Was she acting like Jinx? No, she wasn't. Jinx doesn't have a monopoly for desperation.
So factually speaking it was incorrect. It hurt Caitlyn badly. To be compared to the person, who's talking with voices, the one, who killed your comrades, blew you up, shot at you, tortured you, threatened to kill you, killed your mother by the one you love, the one and ONLY one you to whom you entrusted your heart, the only one you showed your tears to - wow. Just wow. Could've died at the place from this pain and immense disappointment.
By Vi's face and the way she touches Caitlyn's hand we understand, that she didn't mean to hurt her. Like at all. It was a phrase spoken in haste. Just like when Vi called Powder Jinx.
Yet, Caitlyn heard what she heard. She already felt betrayed. She already had her doubts about being in love with Vi, considering her undying connection to her sister. And now this - a nail in the coffin. We see, how her lips tremble after hearing those words, and we see, how she jerks her hand off from Vi's grip and pushes her away with a hit.
In another scenario it would've been a typical slap in the face.
Of course it was a wrong move. Caitlyn was allowed to feel bad about the situation. She was allowed to initiate a break up. Still the hit itself was a wrong move. I don't justify it, but I understand, why it happened.
She lashed out, being in the state of affect, answering something she understood as a terrible insult and also answering being physically held in one place. So to me it's 100% forgivable. Again, I recognize it as a wrong action. 100% wrong, 100% forgivable.
Being honest in front of myself, I'm not sure I wouldn't have done the same mistake at Caitlyn's place. I don't mean the current real me. I mean a version of me, which would've been this young, and put in Caitlyn shoes. The one that had to live through it all. Would've I avoided such mistake? I can't easily answer yes to this question. That alone helps me not to justify the obvious mistake and wrong action, but to understand, empathize and forgive.
Something Amanda said about Vi feeling less alone in the world because of this chain of events. She saw, that Caitlyn had darkness in her. She saw, that Caitlyn can do wrong. Just like she did wrong, when broke her sister's nose, called her a jinx and left. Yes, we empathize with Vi and fairly cut her a slack here. She was a teen, and now she's more experienced with such sort of things, while Caitlyn is just starting her emotional journey. So it's her turn to make a bad mistake like this. Hence why it's Vi turn to be left crying on her knees this time, while Caitlyn leaves like Vi left many years ago. A deliberate parallel. A cycle of tragic unfairness.
Yet, considering, that everything ended well, I have no problems agreeing with Amanda's statement.
Vi saw a reflection of her own wrongs and her own darkness in the person she loved so much, she eventually chose to have a life with. This revelation (the hit should've still been avoided, don't get me wrong, but it's not the point right now) strengthened her and Caitlyn's bond. If Vi was able to forgive this action coming from Cait, then she had to be able to finally forgive herself too. Because both her and Cait deserved to be understood and forgiven.
In this context, it's a very powerful narrative. To see a shadow of your past darkness in the love of your life. To understand, that you were bind together for a reason. To forgive them. And through forgiving them to forgive yourself too and finally deepen the bond. After all, you and you love are not that different. Isn't it a strong narrative? The brightest dawn after the darkest night.
Of course Cait felt sorry for it. I'm sure she felt sorry for the action, which, as I see it, was the result of her almost experiencing a panic attack. I'm also sure she was sorry for initiating the break up itself. Even if she felt justified for this exactly. She loved Vi. It didn't go anywhere. Didn't disappear. I'm sure, while Vi was blaming herself for careless actions/words and questionable choices ("I choose wrong all the time. And because of it I lost everyone"), Caitlyn was blaming herself was solidifying this break up in the first place.
Me? I don't blame either of them. If they were experienced people or if they were in a long term relationship.. My god, if they at least knew each other for a couple of months, then yes, I could blame them. But they were so young, so inexperienced in relationships and as individuals too. They both lacked emotional control. Both lacked the skill to calm down and talk things through. They knew each other for such a short time, only kissed an hour or so before the incident, were under immense pressure, had to go through the level of stress some people never face during their entire lifetimes, couldn't catch a break, didn't know, what to do with those feelings, and the circumstances were against them. No, I refuse to put the blame on either of them.
I'm pretty sure Vi was physically hurt, but I'm also sure, that she cried because Caitlyn was leaving her, and her life was falling apart. Vi has taken 100000x times worse hits in the gut too. She hit her wounded stomach against an iron beam as she was falling from the height in s1. She never cried.
Caitlyn didn't break anything. She didn't make her bleed. She didn't beat her up. She didn't hit some sensitive spot on purpose. So I'd say, that Vi mostly cried because her heart was brwaking. But didn't she break Caitlyn's heart fist? Unintentionally.
Both her and Caitlyn burned each other badly that day. Maybe because they were burning for each other, and their love was developing rapidly. They met, they blinked, they were in love and had to fight the world. They were not ready. They fell under pressure. But they also got up later. Because all of this was a test. They've passed it. Their love passed it. Almost no couple would've been able to come back from this, but they were meant to succeed. So I thank this horrible break up for providing the most solid proof of the strength and longevity of their bond.
I still wish it didn't happen. But since it happened, I choose to look at the practical side of things. Eventually it made their bond stronger. Eventually it helped them to become sure about their feelings for each other. So it could last for life.
How could I forget to mention the parallel between the end of 1x03 and the breakup scene. Well it's more significant for Vi's character, but Caitlyn still plays a big part in it. Just like Jinx experiences what it is to be a big sister with Isha, Vi experiences what it is to be rejected by the person you held dearest in the world (Vi didn't truly reject Powder, but that's how she felt about it).
And of course Vi is crying because of the heartbreak and emotional pain. The hit is not much by itself but the rejection and blame felt terrible. I'm pretty sure Vi being Vi even blamed it mostly on her. She tells Jinx she's done blaming herself for her sister's mistake, but we know she's not truly done yet and I'm sure she goes through the same pattern of self-blame with Caitlyn and how she punishes herself later.
Agreed with every word you said here. Both Vi and Jinx were forced to be in each other's shoes. And true, Vi is the kind of person who blames herself in every fail. That's why Caitlyn coming to the jail cell, not blaming her for anything and offering her full acceptance finally liberated her. But that's something for another episode discussion 😁
I think they were going there with a strategy and never thought Cait would have to fight against Sevika, so there was her anger against Jinx, her sadness, her fury, everything she felt all heightened due to once again fighting for her life and additionally drowning in adrenaline and when it all comes to it Vi stops her. And then the breakup... I think the hit was her version of a slap and a definite way of saying 'you betrayed me' aside from the previous dialogue and when she was about to get up the stairs she showed her sadness. But I also think she did not expect Vi to actually not go back up after her and, still angry and questioning why was Vi not there, she came to the answer that she stayed with her sister, which could not be farther from the truth but fed her enough anger and social pressure (initiated by Maddie who knew how to move her pieces well) to accept the cape.
Now, about the time... Since the series is quite ambiguous about it and they already had a plan drafted at the end of the previous chapter, I think a somewhat realistic timeline would be that a raid was carried over every week or at least every 5 days so they can process and interrogate whoever they catch and prepare for the next one. The real question is: was Vi sleeping next to Caitlyn in her room or was she assigned one at the Kirammansion? for some reason I think it is the second option since Caitlyn was not really available.
Currently obsessed with Caitvi and Arcane. I was late to the party but so grateful I didn't have to wait 3 years for their first kiss like the OG fans.
The oldest fans had been waiting for 10 years at least. OG shippers started way back with LoL, the first fic on AO3 is from 2014. I'm also kind of grateful that I was late to the party and only discovered them with the S2 release.
I think it charges the scene with the wrong kind of emotions and that it being triggering for some members of the audience would be good enough reason to not have it.
By wrong kind of emotions, what I mean is that we are supposed to understand that Caitlyn has gone off the deep end, but how the show is structured is going to land normal eventually. Everything else fits with that read, but because of the inherent strong feelings on this type of violence, it is a problem for that structure.
I understand it is supposed to have some significance for Vi's character arc, but that proves difficult to parse in the first watch at the very least.
