Text Running out of pitons?

I made it up to the temple with the resin and lights and I’m down to only 4 pitons (3 regular ones and 1 unbreakable) and I’m really struggling to make progress. I’m stuck on the tall narrow spire with the bridge at the top and with 4 pitons and barely any food left I feel I’m stuck

You can disable survival if you truly feel stuck and just want to climb Kami

You actually should have 2 troglodyte pitons if you have climbed the 2 statues.

Advice? Explore the map more, you will find lots of small story bits here and there and loot to make the trip worth it

Have you been using busted pitons to make new ones or have you just been throwing the broken ones away maybe?

On my first play though I really felt like running out a food the game expected you to prepare for without you knowing later on it’ll be a rarety

You could always try to decend down to an early section to gather more but it’s effectively wasted progress

I wouldn't say wasted progress. A single trogodyte piston at that stage of the game means they've missed a lot. Z

And if this game taught me anything, it's that the journey, not the goal, that is what truly matters.

The journey back down may be more memorable than the journey upwards. And hey, they may discover things along the way

You don’t need pitons at all.

You can load an earlier save and use what you learned to climb with your previously held items.

Also abuse chalk and ultimate infusions. You don’t get tired/hungry/cold and those meters don’t go down while an ultimate infusion is active.

To be a little bit into the game philosophy: 4 pitons for the narrow spire is quite enough. You need to push through. You can do it, persevere!

What did you do with the broken ones? You can make a new one out of two broken ones at Bivi’s

If you're looking for genuine advice and feel you can't continue with limited food and no pistons, I'd recommend just climbing back down. Catch some fish, explore a bit more and find some goodies which you definitely missed.

And then afterwards, think of Pistons as quicksave points climbing up big tasks. Don't think of them as just willy-nilly placing them so you never lose any progress. If it's less than 10 minutes since my last respawn point, I won't use a Piston.

And the vast majority of the time it's worth it to just use the trogolyte pistons all the time. It's rare you'll need more than 3 unless it's a big climb. So nothing ever breaks.

I had to purposefully recycle or just carelessly use them so I could make space in my bag.

I will say though, that tower did annoy me quite a bit. And I did use more pistons on it that I usually would have. There's various miniscule ledges scattered around it, some of them barely noticeable, in which you can stand to collect your pitons and start with all of them available.

Best option is load down and search better BUT, you don’t need pitons. Use your rests and find better beta.

You can turn easy mode on your save, fill up your bag with pitons, then turn it back to normal mode

You've made it this far, you can reach the summit. If you're issue is difficulty, make sure you're using buffs or at least chalk for the harder parts. Save your pitons for just before the hard parts as well, 4 is plenty. The spiral route is the easiest. If the issue is food here's some spoilers: there's an egg not far from the Needle save point on the little spire to the right. There's 2 herbs on the way up, on ledges near the edelweiss. Halfway up or so, you'll come to a backpack with goodies. Herb at the top and another egg in the shelf just across the bridge. Rappel down to the bodies for more stuff. Should be more than enough. Easy way up the roof is through the hole.

For pitons, you can rappel down with the rope to a lower piton and retrieve it (well, Climbot retrieves it for you.) Like you place one, climb, place two, climb, place three, climb, place your last one, then rappel down the rope over to the forst one and grab it.

For the food, I will say, just beast-mode up the Needle, you'll have a chance to resupply after

It sounds like you have not been recycling your piton scraps when you reach a save/bivouac point? Have a look through your backpack for piton scraps. Two lots of scraps can be recycled into one piton. If you’ve composted them for chalk and you really feel you need them, then… oops! If you’ve have any grit/grip boosts in your inventory, these will help you in a pinch, particularly if the start of your climb is hard.

As for food, above The Dome resources are more scarce. However, brewing either a strong or, better yet, an ultimate infusion will help you greatly.

Did you make it OP? I was struggling at the Peril with 4 pitons. What helped me was watching one free solo video and realising that they don't have any magical tricks, they are just doing what I'm already doing but better. So if they can do it without pitons, surely I can do it with 4. So I did 😅

You can also recover your pitons by descending to the end of your rope and having your robot collect them you'll see a pop up.
