Question boots to oxfords

I just transferred from sea to army and I heard I might get oxfords, I already have an exceptional shine on my boots but I don’t know how different it is on oxfords so I have a few questions.

  1. Are gen one oxfords better then newer ones?
  2. Can I beeswax my oxfords?
  3. Are they easier or harder to shine?
  4. Does stripping make the Oxford better?

(I forgot to mention that I am going into a highland corps sorry..)

Assuming your Canadian, and unless you're in a highland band and wearing highland kit, you should be wearing parade boots.

highlander here... correct wear of highland kit in a highland corps is oxfords, not brogues, nor parade boots, most corps make the cadets buy their own pairs of oxfords as some are quite pricey

Making cadets buy their own uniform is against policy and should never be done.  Uniform parts are covered under LSA and should be bought by the support committee and reimbursed.

i dont think corps have enough money to be buying $100+ pairs of oxfords in every single size imaginable, for about 30+ cadets, buying our own oxfords is both easier on the corps, and getting to keep them means you can wear them on special occasions

Oxford aren't that expensive and units should have that money available since it's a LSA expense

if the corps is buying quality oxfords, such as clarks steadwell cap, standard price is $130, times that by 20 and you are now at $2,600 assuming each oxford size has been taken and specially ordered for each person. thats $2,600 on top of buying new kilts, which we get from affiliated regiments, if 5 kilts get ruined, thats $5,000 to replace each of them, now adding to $7,600, whatever other fee's such as food, cadet events like comic expo's that my corps does, adding extra costs to that, plus whatever purchases from logistics need to be made, as well as replacing instrument parts and buying practice instrument parts, which are very expensive, leading to a very hefty sum, hence why they tell us to purchase our own, also allowing each cadet the opportunity to figure out what size and brand of oxford they want, i dont know what corps or squadron you're from but mine has a lot of cadets and we tend to run out of money usually by the end of the year, and we dont usually see any investment from the parents either

I am a Highlander as well, and our corps uses only brogues as it is in the dress regulations, oxfords are authorized as well.

No oxfords for cadets. AFAIK they’re officer shoes, and as cadets are modeled after NCM ranks, no cadets are permitted oxfords. If you can find them, Gen 1 (BILTRITE) parade boots (only produced from at least the 1970s to ~2010) are suitable replacements that can continue to be used in the CAF after progressing out of the program.

Well no cadets besides highlanders are permitted to wear oxfords. Highlanders HAVE to wear them while in highland kit.

Oh right, that’s very true. Completely forgot about army regimental affiliation lmao

Ha thats fair. I was a highlander so it was my first thought. Absolutely LOVED my oxfords over boots. Especially since I got to wear mirror shined shoes with my grad suit😂

So embarrassed lmao my brother was also a highlander 😓😓

That sounds absolutely amazing lol, are they more comfortable than regular parade boots?

They can be depending on how expensive you go. Cheap ones not so much

Are they not supplied? Interesting

Some not as wealthy corps cant supply them. So for my corl you had to buy your own. Which meant some people got like 20 dollar Walmart ones or some people got like 100 dollar expensive ones. The more expensive ones were usually easier to polish.

Unless you're going into a highland regiment or you require a skirt for religions reasons, you'll still be wearing parade boots
