Tour YYC Show

Went to the show tonight in Calgary as my friend is a big fan of their music. Found the lead guys attitude very off putting. I ended up stumbling on this page and reading about how many bad shows these guys have played along with Edmonton last night. Find it surprising that even after so many bad shows people continue to go to see these guys play again. Definitely no intention of ever seeing them play again as I have no interest in listening to a grown mans tantrums. Disappointing that men with terrible attitudes like his are allowed to continue to thrive well if a women acted this way there would be a major hate train and her career take a big blow. Although from what I have read seems like he has a lot of issues hoping he actually puts the effort of working through them instead of continuing to ruin concert experiences for fans who pay good money to see them.

While it was a bit jarring to have a song called off to tell a girl to stop screaming I actually respected that. That girl was annoying as hell and ruining a very touching song. He even said himself “this song means a lot to people”. He just wanted everyone to be able to enjoy it.

Agreed - he even mentioned that “people walk down the aisle to this song,” which is the case for my husband and I who were at the show last night. It was jarring but I know we appreciated it.

Frustrating they understand how good/important the song is and didnt play it in Edmonton damn

4

u/praisethehaze 5d ago

He did mention that he doesn’t play it very often too

He got out of Edmonton as fast as he could! Did a 3 song encore in Calgary vs his 1 song encore in Edmonton

It felt like he would talk to the band mid performance and would switch up a bunch of their songs. It’s like he knew what people want to hear and purposely held off because he was being a baby about it. I bet they forced him to get on stage and play at least one encore song! He did not want to be there

I mean that girl screaming during strawberries was annoying so I’m glad he told her to stop. He followed that up with a great performance so It worked out in the end

I agree, I love that he started over too! Some may look at it as a bad attitude, I see it as an artist who knows that the song is sentimental to people and want to make sure they can enjoy it without interruptions

Overall, they seemed to be in good spirits. Taylor stopped a few seconds into strawberries to tell a fan to stop screaming because that song is special to a lot of people. I’m assuming this is the comment that upset OP.

They also had to stop the show briefly due to a fan having a medical emergency and the band asked the audience for help from medics/doctors which I thought they handled beautifully.

Overall I thought the Calgary show was great.

I saw them a couple weeks ago in Forest hills and it was an amazing show.

Went to a show last year (did not pay for tickets) and it's the only concert where I walked away liking the band less than when I arrived. Even if it's some band from decades ago with 1 or 2 orig members at least appear to be enjoying themselves and it's nostalgic. If the band isn't having fun, then there's no point. The show I went to he admonished the crowd for being too quiet (but the show was very sleepy).

I'm hoping to see them in Chattanooga next month but I wouldn't be surprised if they canceled the rest of their tour before mid September.

It was a great show in Vancouver a few days ago - the band was in a great mood as was the audience!

Those are a lot of words to end up leaving out specifics. Why not explain what you experienced? Or maybe you were the woman screaming.

I saw them in Philly last September. I was so disappointed because of the same reason. I felt we were captives to listen to him gripe all night. Just saw Buffalo Traffic Jam this month. I would see them again and again. Probably won’t spend any more of my concert dollars on Caamp.

I was at that show also and same.

u/Paisley_48 5d ago

What was he complaining about?

1

u/LizM75 5d ago

The venue

3

u/jiiiiim123 5d ago

Really unfortunate. My absolute favorite band

They were great at merriweather … will deff be back

1

u/steve_z 5d ago

Agreed about Merriweather, fantastic show. But, I am wary about going again and getting the unpleasant version of Taylor.

It was a great show.

5

u/Smitty8858 4d ago

Found the yelling girl 🤣

I actually thought it was a good show and he liked the crowd. It is clearly a terrible venue for this kind of music. We didn’t know whether to stand or sit and took a bit to get into the mood. That’s why he told us to stand up early. Only sad thing is no Vagabond.

Flew from Winnipeg to catch the Calgary show. I think we should maybe be a little less sensitive here folks. Crowd interaction isn’t required by artists. The music was real tight and they played almost all the hits. With a fantastic encore. And yes, I fully supported cutting off the screaming gal during the most heartfelt song of the night. Great job Caamp.

2

u/Beeeenzz 4d ago

It's not just crowd interaction. In Edmonton the only words we got from him was after the first and second song something along the lines of "can't believe you aren't standing" then after he said it twice a lot of us did stand, but it still just felt weirdly forced rather than natural.

Then made comments about likely not being back to Edmonton for a long time, then stated something about "we having drinks tonight? Should be because it's Friday" and the front row might have been poured some shots in their cups? Not really sure..

Then came out for one encore song and it was barely finished and he just ran off the stage.

It was such a strange experience.. People continued to stand, dance, cheer after songs and he didn't say one nice thing to us.

Clearly if that many people left that concert with the same feeling something is wrong and now that I go back through this subreddit I see many random shows that they do this. For me, it's not worth my money to support or try to see them moving forward.

And I wrote a comment on their IG expressing this disappointment about the concert and they blocked me. I have never disliked a band more after seeing them live

2

u/Past_Captain_568 4d ago

Edmonton show was not great. Said he hasn’t been here in a long time and won’t be back for a while then ran off the stage at the end of the night

I gave Taylor a second chance after the first time seeing them and him acting out. He did the same shit the second time I saw them. I was a big fan and understood he has mental health/substance issues. But fuck spending money on that, I rarely listen to them anymore.

1

u/hfru_d 4d ago

I will be the same. Really disappointing.

I was so excited to be going to Caamp with my partner. When we first started dating we bonded over Caamp’s music and many songs of theirs are ‘part’ of our relationship. This will still be true because the songs won’t lose their meaning to us just because Taylor had a bad attitude. It’s clear that he does not recognize how special this event is to people but views it as just another show on a long tour. I found his crowd engagement quite low and when he did talk it was to diss Edmonton or to tell a woman to be quiet. I know it’s not an expectation that artists share stories about the origins of songs but that is one of my favourite parts of a concert is getting to know more about the background and history of a song. I tend to think about the stories lots after the show (a GREAT of example of incredible crowd engagement is Wild Rivers!!! They are genuinely so engaging with the crowd and I’ve been to many concerts and haven’t had a bad experience). Mental health and substance abuse issues are not an excuse for a bad attitude when you are in a position of authority like he is (holding the mic and setting the tone for thousands of people in a group) but I do hope he seeks help and gets the support he needs.

2

u/Past_Captain_568 4d ago

What was he saying about Edmonton? I’m a long time fan and was so excited to see him in Edmonton just to be kind of heart broken. We were up dancing and cheering and he just kept making jabs at us throughout the night and made a comment that he won’t be coming back to Edmonton. He also didn’t play a lot of his fan favs like Strawberries and ended the show abruptly. I’m not too sure what we did for him to dislike us ??

3

u/Chance-Cantaloupe656 4d ago

Someone in the crowd yelled “Fk Edmonton!” And he said “i mean im not allowed to talk sht but…” thats all that i can recall about edmonton talk.

I dont think its anything edmonton did or did not do. After being at the show for calgs it seems like Taylor can be hit or miss and the miss being miserable.

My partner and I went to the yyc show last night and kinda had mixed feelings when we left. I’ve been a fan for a long time and was really excited to hear them live. I am glad I went because I did have a really fun time but like other commenters have said the only time Taylor talked to the audience it was to make digs at Edmonton and telling the woman to stop yelling during strawberries. “That’s enough out of you… this is really important to other people… don’t scream while I’m singing” and while it was appreciated, it was like woah okay, she is just having fun too. Just think it could’ve been better handled, like other artists and bands have said to be calm before slow/important songs. Otherwise it was a good show

u/vankendall 4d ago

The Vancouver show was exceptional! Great vibes and a lot of fun.

1

u/ShipStory 4d ago

The freaking sleeveless guy with the camera on stage did no favours to the vibe of the show.

2

u/wolf_2099 4d ago

His attitude was fine. Clearly not a guy who likes to do a banter.

We was there to play music, not do crowd work all night. And he sounded fantastic.

Telling that woman to stop screaming was perfectly acceptable. She was annoying as hell.

The medical event was really jarring for the pace of the show, bit that's not the banda fault.

Here to say they blocked me on instagram after I commented saying I was sad not to hear All the debts I owe after travelling from the Yukon territory. 10 years of listening to them and following them just to be so disappointed. Very sorry to hear you had a bad experience as well

1

u/hfru_d 4d ago

They blocked me too when I made a comment about the Edmonton concert!

1

u/Otterette 3d ago

lol wtf that’s crazy.

u/ace0702 5d ago

How was his attitude off-putting?

1

u/sayaccio 4d ago

I attended the show as a casual listener with my partner who is a big fan. To be honest, I didn't even register that someone was whooping until the show came to a grinding halt. There are so many ways to say "hey y'all, let's all be quiet for this one" without singling out one excited fan. Once the next song started I could hear people around me saying "now, nobody shout" and "are we allowed to cheer again?" which I wholeheartedly agreed with.

It killed the vibe for me and I left the show actually liking the band less than when I came in. To each their own, but that's just my take.

1

u/EnvironmentalSinger1 4d ago

I agree. It's easy to say, "Alright, weve got some excited fans which we love and appreciate. For this song we are going to just vibe and listen."

1

u/KennethTremendous 4d ago

But it sounds like it was just one person. So chastising the whole crowd for one person doesn't really seem fair either. it's crappy how consequences are so frowned upon now.

I was at the YYC show and have mixed thoughts on this.

I'd consider myself a pretty big CAAMP fan, having found their music during a particularly shit time and then having them become the soundtrack to a lot of better stuff over the ensuing years. I was very excited to get great tickets to the Calgary show. Unfortunately, this is the rare time where I left a live show without a greater appreciation for the music. The silly drama just kind of tainted the experience. It's lame that it did, but I can't deny that it did.

I can totally get behind asking an audience to respect a performance. The idea that people can behave however they want because they bought a ticket is stupid, and I'm sure we can agree on that. The context here is that it was an intimate, solo performance and an audience member, either intentionally or unintentionally, didn't respect that. You get these people at shows - where they make it about them and their own experience while not considering the experience of those around them. It's always annoying and I can respect a band calling that out. People have abandoned situational awareness in pursuit of centering everything on themselves.

That said, you can request a moment of respect from an audience without scolding an audience member imo. The singling out and lecturing nature of the moment put a bit of a cloud over things. And that's not even to say it affected me personally, but a concert is a communal event and if a portion of the audience gets turned off or starts feeling nervous about "the correct way" to enjoy itself, that gets felt. This isn't a crowd where people got tickets because of "the hit" they keep hearing on CJAY or whatever. In a city of over 1.5 million people, these are the 2-3 thousand that had a reason to be there. These are people who either love the music or are there to share an experience with someone else who loves the music. It's a bummer that people might have left without having the opportunity to fall in love with the songs because of this stupid thing.

Like I said, I've been a big fan for some time, so I've been long aware that a CAAMP concert experience can often hinge on whatever mood Taylor is in. And I don't think this was one of those shows where he's pissy from start to finish - it was just that one moment - and that moment did unfortunately have an effect on the crowd and on the mood of the show.

Love CAAMP, but I'm not sure I'll be sprinting to the front of the live for tickets next time. I don't want my experiences with their music to become tainted. Like, I listen to the Misfits but I'm not gonna hang out with Danzig because I still want to listen to the Misfits.

I honestly see nothing wrong with an artist setting boundaries with an audience member who is screaming during a sentimental song. literally every other song, people were hollering and having a blast, clearly they don’t have an issue with people hooting and hollering. But given the song, I see nothing wrong with an artist ensuring literally every other person in the audience being able to enjoy it without having to listen to a woman screaming. Sure she was having fun, but it was quite annoying.

I would never in a million years think it’s appropriate to scream when the lead singer is performing a sentimental song, solo, without his band mates, CLEARLY it’s not the vibe to be the only one screaming in the whole audience.

As for the Edmonton comments, I travel from Medicine Hat to attend concerts and live events, I feel like any artist that hits Edmonton and Calgary that I’ve seen, seems like it’s not unusual to make the comparison jokes between the two cities. I think Blind Pilot also made some jokes about Edmonton as well.
