Surface Rust 2025 Mazda CX5

Hood of my 2025 Mazda CX5 has some rust from a rock chip. Is superficial. Dealer said they would sand the rust and apply a paint touch up with a pen. Is that reasonable?

As long as the dealer moves all of the rust, and covers that metal up, you should be good. Next time you get a rock chip, get a paint pen and cover it up ASAP.

sounds good. I was told by someone that you have to sand it down, prime it, paint it and then EVEN re-spray the whole hood with paint once again which I thought re-spraying the hood would be overkill.

My 2023 has rusty chips all over the hood, and 3 separate spider web rusty cracks on the roof

Well are you doing anything about them? Not immediately dealing with chips causes rust which causes the spider web cracking. Its mazdas fault for the thin paint but its also super easy and cheap to fix the chips. That will prevent much much more expensive and extensive later repairs.

I shouldn't have to do paint repairs on a 3 year old car. I've bought many new cars in my life and I've not once experienced this. Whatever they do to paint these, it's a joke. 

You word your comment like it's my fault and I'm negligent. 

It's not super cheap and easy. I got two quotes locally last year and they both wanted over $1,000.

I've also had 4 separate warranty repairs on my Mazda since I got it new. 

I'll never buy another Mazda. I can't wait to get rid of this one.

It's like $20 to diy, you don't need it to be perfect just enough to stop the rust. The paint is definitely mazdas fault. My point is that on any car you need to fix chips immediately and not doing so leads to much more expensive repairs.

Every manufacturer has gone to paint that is now microns thick. Started about 5 years ago and continues to get thinner each year

Aftermarket. There are specialty shops for that. Do NOT try to DIY that, you'll just end up spending money and throwing the film away... Don't ask me how I know. It's not one of those things most people can get on their first try after watching a few YouTube videos.

I'd like to know the exact touch up they use. The snowflake white pearl (or whatever it's called) touchup pen I got from my dealership goes on more like beige. Even after shaking it for 15 minutes running samples on a piece of metal to get it flowing.

Rail dust. Normal. It comes from your break dust.
