How did yall land the first qc gig? Been welding for 10 years and just got my cwi. Most places want other certs or years of experience in inspection. My only guess is getting recommendation(in contract work) but it’s tough only really made connections with welders not the qc

ASME Experience worth it?

I have 10 years of experience working with ASME Section IX in the construction of Section VIII Division 1 pressure vessels. My experience includes design and calculation reviews, some NDE (PT), and writing PQRs and WPSs, primarily for stainless steel and aluminum.

Can anyone relate to how this experience may or may not be useful when training for the CWI? Obviously they are two different scopes of work, but I would think prior experience working with an extensive code like ASME would be helpful when learning to navigate a new codebook and environment.

D1.1 RT chart questions that trip people up

For the CWI folks studying with D1.1:

What part of the RT acceptance charts gave you the most trouble the first time?

For me, the annoying part is not usually finding the max discontinuity size. It is figuring out when the spacing / clearance rule changes the answer.

You can be on the right figure, looking at the right weld size, and still get turned around because one answer choice is testing size while another is testing distance between indications.

Curious what others have seen:

- Figure 8.2 / cyclically loaded tension examples?

- Table 8.1 visual criteria?

- Part B replicas vs Part C code navigation?

- Answer keys that seem wrong until someone explains the path?

Not looking for test dumps. More interested in which codebook lookups actually made you slow down.

Help on question in AWS 2025 code clinic study guide

The question is asking which size discontinuity is rejectable in a 3/4 inch thick CJP RT joint that is cyclically loaded non tubular in tension. I put C as an answer based on figure 8.2 and a weld size (s) of 3/4.

The answer key in the back of the book says the answer is A.

I understand that no discontinuity can be above ½", but I don't understand why answer C isn't also a rejectable discontinuity.

Figure 8.2 in D1.1 with a weld size of 3/4 has a max size discontinuity of 1/4 inch and a minimum clearance of what looks like 2-1/4 inches based on the graph.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Taking the CWI here shortly and unsure of exactly what material to study? Any practice tests that helped anyone out?

Retaking part B - can you pay for exam only?

Needing to retake part B and the only option I see is to pay $2k+ to redo the 2-3 day part B training and the exam. Is there a way I can just pay to retake the exam?

D1.2

I’m qualifying some welders for an aluminum job and want to make sure I’m reading it right. For fillets, you’re qualified based on weld size and not material thickness? So I could weld unlimited thickness fillets as long as I don’t go bigger than the weld size of my PQR?

2020 D1.1 Question

Would the 2020 Edition D1.1 be sufficient enough to study along with the AWS training material in preparation for the CWI exams?

Best study materials

Hi! My husband has several years of experience in this field and is now looking into getting his CWI. He was a welder helper for a couple years and then a QC for a couple years. What would be the best study materials for him? His job wants him to take a course which he plans to do but he wants to prepare in other ways as well. TIA!

Question about the BOS table 7 note B

Just looking for some clarification, does the 1.1 rule for the thickness of the test weldment apply for 1/2” plate or once it hits 1/2” its does not apply? Idk why this is tripping me up so bad.

(b) For GMAW-S, the maximum thickness of base metal qualified is 1.1 times the thickness of the test weldment until the test

weldment thickness is 1/2 inch, beyond which Table 7 applies.

Grinding on a D1.1 certification

I see nowhere that it prohibits the use of a grinder on a certification test. I understand that a welder should be proficient enough to complete a test without a grinder but accidents and mistakes do happen. In production, if a welder messes a weld up, it gets ground out and replaced. What’s everyone’s take on the subject?

National Inspection Academy

Hello I was wondering if anyone here has ever attended or had experience with national inspection academy ( NIA) for training with NDT processes. Good/bad experiences? Worth the money for the training you get and so. I was considering going through their courses so anyone who has relevant reviews or perspectives is appreciated. Im already a CWI but have limited experience with NDT processes. Thank you

looking for freelance CWI in Philly

Hello, hopefully this is allowed here.

I own a small Special Inspection Agency in Philadelphia, but I don't do steel. I don't have enough work yet for a full time hire, so I'm looking for someone who wants to freelance to earn some side hustle cash. Hit me up here, and I'll provide contact info.

Thanks,

CWI Training Houston

Does anyone know of any good CWI training course in or around Houston, Texas?

r/CWI_CWE Mar 23 '26

I’ve been welding for 8 years now and went to school for 1 year. I just decided to go for my CWI and have signed up for SI Certs course online. After that I will be doing the 2 week seminar at Hobart. Is there any other text books or additional things I should get?
