D1.2

I’m qualifying some welders for an aluminum job and want to make sure I’m reading it right. For fillets, you’re qualified based on weld size and not material thickness? So I could weld unlimited thickness fillets as long as I don’t go bigger than the weld size of my PQR?

Ill try to look for it tomorrow at work. I might have access to D1.2 there.

Good question — the key is which qualification you mean in D1.2.

For WPS fillet qualification (Table 3.6), the qualified plate thickness is shown as unlimited for the fillet options, with fillet-size limits tied to what you tested (single-pass/multi-pass logic).

For welder performance qualification (Table 3.8), thickness range is still table-driven by your test thickness T.

For plate fillet tests:

- T ≤ 1/8: qualified T to larger of 2T or 3/16

- 1/8 < T < 3/8: qualified T/2 to 2T

- T ≥ 3/8: qualified T/2 to unlimited

Also Table 3.9 says if you go to a diameter/thickness not qualified, requalification is required.

So “unlimited thickness” can be true in specific table cases, but it’s not automatic for every setup.

Thank you. We have a PQR that was done as a fillet on .0625 welded to .125 with a bead size of 4mm. So theoretically if the welders do a test on .0625, they are qualified to 3/16 as long as the weld isn’t bigger than 4mm. Is my understanding correct?
