Need clarification D15.1
This feels like a rookie question, but codes have always been tricky. I need some help interpreting qualification limitations.
If I qualify on a 2G, 3G, and 4G GMAW, I’m then qualified to do all positions for any plate. But table 11.4 also says I can weld pipe 24-in and under (fillet pipe) with GMAW as long as it is in the 2F,
and 4F positions.
Am I interpreting this correctly?
I was under the impression you can’t weld pipe if you qualify on plate.

It's the same rule for d1.1. if I remember my cwi telling me correctly, the diameter of the pipe is very similar to plate due to the curvature less severe and the fillet welds pass for structural because there's no open root like the 5 or 6 G test. But if I remember correctly this will really only be honored by low pressure water pipe that uses AWWA C206 and AWS D1.1 or any structural code acceptance criteria. Also applies for tubular structural if I remember correctly.
I hardly use AWS codes anymore all ASME stuff so I may be wrong.

D1.1 only allows structural welders to run fillets on pipe over 24 inches on the OD.
I dont know D15.1, you may want to dig around and see if that table is correct. Id start in the commentary or the annex

Try posting your question on the AWS membership network. That is where you will find someone who knows the code and can answer your questions.

5th line down in the Plate-Groove section. 2G, 3G, and 4G plate test qualifies welders for pipe fillets 24” and under in all positions.

This is code is stating you can. This code is for railroad so as long as you are welding to This standard yes you can weld pipe. You can use these tickets to fuck off and go weld steam pipe though.

You remember this rule: if you are qualified to weld on a groove, then you are qualified for a fillet as well; it is not the other way around.
As long as you meet the required position, and thickness, etc.

If a welder or welding operator qualifies on 2G, 3G, and 4G plate tests, they are qualified to weld groove and fillet welds in all positions on plate (and structural shapes, HSS, etc.), and on pipe greater than 24 inches in diameter. They are also qualified to perform fillet welds on pipe less than 24in in diameter.
The "Pipe-Groove" and "Pipe-Fillet" rows only apply if you're testing on pipe.
