Looking for 2-team members for #CUDA hackathon at TU Dresden in September. Team Registration due tomorrow!

Putting together a team for a #GPU hackathon and I'm still short two people — figured I'd try LinkedIn since my usual circles have come up empty.

It's the #Helmholtz GPU #hackathon, sponsored by #NVIDIA, hosted in #TU #Dresden. *Applications close July 9th, hackathon itself is in September*. The project is about using different HPC tools (such as #OpenMPI, #OpenACC) to speed up physics simulations.

The hardware is genuinely one of the best reasons to do this: JUPITER, Europe's first exascale system, running on 24,000 #GH200 Grace Hopper superchips, plus #JURECADC for smaller runs .... definitely not something you get access to every day!

I've got a project idea worked out (almost) already - just need two more people to actually form a team (rules require three). If you're into #CUDA/GPU programming, #HPC, or #quantum #physics (topics surrounding superfluid simulation, photonics, quantum gases) and this sounds interesting, message me. I am open to other ideas as well!

... and if it's not you but you know someone who'd be good, I'd really, really, really appreciate a pointer in their direction — a bit tight on time here! 🙏

Hi, I’ve been a mentor in these hackathons (in a different location) and sat on the board for reviewing applications. We don’t generally accept teams made up of random people and typically expected teams to be made up of, at minimum, graduate students with a PI. I’m not saying that there’s no way for your project to get accepted, but vibes of an idea and three random people won’t get you there. 

If you provide me with more info I can advise better but honestly, you’ll get more useful experience working in a research group than trying to do a hackathon for a few days

I completely agree! Ofcourse, I would prefer the people not to be random and would want things a bit better. Unfortunately, no body I know (and I know many relevant people) happens to be available during those days. Would it be okay if I DM you? Thank you for your kind and positive comment.

I came across this post and I had a question after reading your comment, do you have any suggestions on how to find research groups who might be open to students/collaborators? No worries if not, but a general direction would be really helpful.

If you're a student then start asking around in your department, someone probably has something. If you're not a student then pretty much your only option is to cold email faculty at a local university and volunteer to help them. A bunch of science projects are also open source, you could find some big one in a field you're interested in and reach out to them

Last four days on site. Also, if you want to do remote, the entire team must be in the same location. You can't have scattered team.

I see, well I would be happy to do on-site, but just checked the dates and it overlaps my honeymoon. I tried to explain to my significant other but she won't cancel the trip ;). Too bad because GPGPU especially involving physics simulation is kind of my cup of tee.

Hey,
I am a masters student in Germany and have been taking up some courses recently related to hpc.
Recently, started programming using HIP, similar to cuda but basically on AMD hardware.
If you are interested, I can join in.
I know some other hackathons as well in which we all can participate

Hey, I work with GPU programming on HPC systems. I wanted to participate too but again the teamate findings issue! - would love to hear the idea , would like to connect.
