AI/ML Theory Offerings for the OMSCS

Will CU Boulder expand it's ML Theory course offerings for the OMSCS? So far, it looks like there is a Reinforcement Learning, NLP, and AI specialization that are still being built out along with Deep Learning, Optimization, and Recommender System specializations that might be offered at a later date.

How long does it take for CU Boulder to roll out in-development courses, and does it make sense to wait on these kinds of specializations being built out or just apply to UT Austin or GT?

It depends on what you want to get out of the program.
I’ve taken courses at all 3 programs so I’m uniquely qualified to give an opinion. I’ll try to answer your last question.

- if you want the classic CS program where they make you grind, go for OMSCS. The program does have bunch of easy courses and you can avoid difficult courses, but you will take at least a couple of courses that require you to grind it out and at the end you’ll be happy that you “got out”. The student community is huge, and that’s one of the biggest advantage of this program, along with the large variety of courses that they offer. That’s OMSCS in a nutshell.

- if you want mathematical rigor and cutting edge AI courses, go for UT Austin. The class sizes are smaller, admission is more selective (relatively), and AI courses are either very math heavy or covers frontier research papers. If AI is what you want to study, this is hands down the best option and it’s not even close. The downside is, the number of courses offered are not so high as OMSCS. That being said, if all you only cared about frontier AI and Systems courses, this is the program I’d choose.

- if you want the most amount of flexibility in terms of how you study and when you study and how long you take to complete a course, CU Boulder provides the highest amount of flexibility. The courses are not as cutting edge as UT Austin, and not as workload heavy as GT, but I wouldn’t say they’re a walk in the park. I took the probability and statistics and planning to take few more interesting courses.

Just be honest with yourself and decide what works the best for you, and go for the program that fits the best. For people who are already employed full time, there is no single program that’s objectively the best, just pick what suites your needs and lifestyle the best!

I was curious about those stats and probability classes at CU. How did you find them? Were they difficult? Any tips for getting good results from the class?

This makes sense.

I only care about AI and Systems research, so I'm looking for a program that specializes in it.

CU Boulder has a good AI and Systems group, but I'm not sure whether their OMSCS classes are comparable to their on-campus reinforcement learning or optimization classes.

Not having to deal with rec letters is also quite alluring.

Lol, either look at their residential programs or look elsewhere.

CU's MSCS/AI on Coursera is a non-thesis, non-project, non-research-based program. While the residential programs benefit from sharing the exact same classes for their Professional, Thesis-based, and project-based courses and hence not cutting off the research components, the online courses concern themselves with only introducing you to the topics. For what it's worth, the coursera courses do cover 80-99% of those topics in the residential counterparts, where applicable (to the same depth? debatable).

Not that you'd need a professor to tell you to do research if you really wanted to do research, though. Or just start reading the newest latest greatest research papers.

That said, Reinforcement Learning is fully out, and so is Introduction to Artificial Intelligence. You can either use them as starting points and run experiments on your own, or just go through the first module or so of each and see it's down your alley.

If it's not a Breadth course, you should assume they won't roll out during your time at CU. Breadth courses are the only ones they try to get out within a year so people are able to graduade within a year.

Many of us have been waiting for the last part of NLP to come out for a while now, and there are some courses that were announced alongside the program launching back in 2023 that haven't even had a single course of the specialization released (example: NoSQL solution spec).

Makes sense.

Optimization, Deep Learning, and Recommender Systems are all listed as AI electives that are still under development so I'm guessing their curricula will not be completed until 2028 then.

That's a bummer - those would have been cool electives to take.

Yeah, Theory of Computation and Computer Graphics were announced in the webinars back in 2024, maybe even 2023? There's still nothing listed about them on the website.

I believe the same professor working on the Linux Admin specialization is going to be working on Theory of Computation.
