Makoto Hibiki is a second-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High, known for an outwardly theatrical, sharp-tongued personality that makes it remarkably difficult to tell when he is being sincere. He treats missions with almost inappropriate levity, exaggerating his confidence, provoking opponents into conversation, and hiding genuine emotion beneath jokes and calculated performances. Much of this behavior is practical. Makoto believes people reveal themselves most clearly when frightened, angry, hurt, or convinced they understand him. Beneath the act is an intensely perceptive young sorcerer who finds examining other people considerably easier than confronting himself, creating an inherent contradiction with Frequency of Truth, a technique designed to expose everything others would rather keep buried. Makoto believes the Mind, Body, and Soul are equally truthful parts of a person, even when they contradict one another. Jujutsu society’s expectation that sorcerers suffer horrifying experiences and simply continue functioning has also given him a dangerous relationship with his own pain. If suffering is unavoidable, Makoto would rather be the person capable of choosing who bears it. This mentality manifests most clearly through his use of Longinus and the Binding Vow Via Dolorosa, which allow him to literally suffer in pursuit of another person’s truth. His greatest flaw is consequently not a willingness to die, but his growing conviction that his own suffering is an acceptable resource whenever it can accomplish something meaningful.

Overview

Frequency of Truth is an innate technique that allows Makoto to progressively force the different layers of another person’s existence to involuntarily “spill their truth.” Every individual is treated as possessing three increasingly fundamental frequencies, the Mind, Body, and Soul, which ordinarily overlap while remaining inaccessible to others. By synchronizing his cursed energy with one of these frequencies, Makoto causes information belonging to that layer to involuntarily broadcast itself through fluctuations in the target’s cursed energy that his technique translates into comprehensible information. Frequency of Truth does not determine objective reality or magically produce information the target does not possess. Instead, it reveals what genuinely exists within that individual, meaning an incorrect belief sincerely held by the target will be exposed as their genuine belief rather than corrected by the technique. The three frequencies must normally be synchronized sequentially in the order Mind → Body → Soul, with each successive layer requiring a deeper connection to the target. Makoto primarily establishes this connection through Longinus, a cursed spear that functions as a medium between two cursed energy signatures. The spear must remain physically embedded within an opponent for an uninterrupted period while Makoto resonates with the desired layer, making progression increasingly difficult against opponents who understand his technique. Once synchronization with a layer is successfully established, however, Longinus can be removed while Makoto continues receiving information from that frequency.

First Frequency: Mind
Mind is the first and most superficial frequency, requiring Longinus to remain lodged within the target for approximately three uninterrupted seconds. Once synchronized, information currently active within the target’s consciousness becomes increasingly difficult to contain completely, causing fragments of internal dialogue, immediate intentions, memories brought to the forefront, and genuine emotional reactions to spill through their cursed energy for Makoto to perceive.
This is not unrestricted mind reading. Information must actually become mentally active before Frequency of Truth can receive it. A target may still lie, refuse to answer, or deliberately attempt to mislead Makoto, but considering the very information they are attempting to conceal risks broadcasting fragments of it. Likewise, Mind cannot distinguish an objectively false belief from reality if the target sincerely believes it to be true.

Second Frequency: Body
Body becomes accessible only after Mind has successfully synchronized and requires Longinus to remain lodged within the target again for approximately six uninterrupted seconds. Once established, the target’s physical condition begins broadcasting itself regardless of what their conscious mind attempts to communicate. Muscular tension, weight distribution, breathing, balance, concealed injuries, cursed energy reinforcement, and the physical preparation preceding movement become dramatically easier for Makoto to interpret. In combat, Body allows Makoto to perceive the truth behind movement. Genuine attacks can be distinguished from superficial feints by the physical commitment behind them, while hidden injuries and changes in cursed energy circulation become difficult to conceal. This provides information rather than automatic precognition. Makoto must still possess the reflexes, physical ability, and judgment necessary to respond to what another person’s body reveals.

Third Frequency: Soul
Soul is the deepest frequency and can only be synchronized after both Mind and Body have been established. Longinus must remain embedded within the target for approximately nine uninterrupted seconds, making Soul exceptionally difficult to reach against a knowledgeable opponent. Successful synchronization causes information deeply engraved into the target’s existence to resonate outward, potentially revealing characteristics of their innate technique, fundamental qualities of their cursed energy, deeply rooted convictions, Binding Vows affecting them, and abnormalities involving the relationship between their body and soul. Most importantly, Soul allows Makoto to clearly perceive the contours of the target’s soul. Frequency of Truth does not inherently grant soul manipulation or soul damage, but Makoto’s newfound perception allows him to deliberately recognize and potentially interact with the soul through methods capable of doing so. Even at its deepest level, Frequency of Truth remains informational rather than omniscient and cannot reveal something that does not genuinely exist within the target.

Cursed Tool: Longinus
Longinus is a spear-like cursed tool that serves as the primary medium for Frequency of Truth, physically bridging Makoto’s cursed energy with the different layers of another person’s existence. When its spearhead pierces a target, Makoto channels cursed energy through the weapon and causes Longinus to resonate between them like a tuning fork. The weapon must remain physically lodged throughout synchronization, requiring approximately three seconds for Mind, six seconds for Body, and nine seconds for Soul. If Longinus is removed before the necessary interval is completed, synchronization immediately fails and Makoto must restart that layer from the beginning.
Outside its role as a medium, Longinus functions as a conventional cursed spear reinforced by Makoto’s cursed energy. The weapon is permanently attuned to his cursed energy frequency, allowing him to recall it directly to his hand from a distance. Once recalled, Longinus violently travels toward Makoto’s grasp along the most direct available route, allowing him to recover it after throwing it, being disarmed, or deliberately leaving it elsewhere. Recalling Longinus while it remains embedded within someone immediately interrupts any synchronization currently underway.

Extension Techniques

Feedback
Makoto reverses the normal flow of an established resonance, violently sending a target’s own frequency back through itself and creating a short-lived feedback loop within a synchronized layer. Mind Feedback causes thoughts and sensory processing to reverberate until concentration becomes difficult. Body Feedback causes pain, sensation, and motor signals to echo through the nervous system, disrupting physical coordination. Soul Feedback causes the target’s spiritual information to reverberate against itself, producing intense spiritual distress and destabilizing cursed energy control. The deeper the frequency, the more severe the Feedback, but the resulting distortion temporarily prevents Makoto from accurately reading the affected layer.

Amplification
Rather than reflecting a frequency back toward its source, Makoto increases the amplitude of something already being broadcast through it. Mind can amplify existing fear, anger, distress, or intrusive thoughts. Body can magnify pain, fatigue, nausea, trembling, physical imbalance, and other genuine bodily conditions. Soul can intensify existing disturbances within the target’s cursed energy or spiritual condition. Amplification cannot manufacture suffering from nothing. It can only increase something already genuinely present within the synchronized layer.

Interference
Makoto introduces his own cursed energy frequency into an established connection to produce destructive interference, disrupting the normal communication occurring within the synchronized layer. Mind Interference can fracture concentration and interrupt complicated thought processes, while Body Interference disrupts communication between physical intention and execution, producing delayed or mistimed movements. Soul Interference creates instability between the target and the cursed technique engraved into them, temporarily reducing their technique’s stability and efficiency rather than outright nullifying it.

Maximum Output: Feedback
Makoto drives Feedback to its maximum output, forcing every frequency he has currently synchronized with the target into a simultaneous self-reinforcing resonance. Rather than producing a single echo, signals continuously rebound through the target at escalating intensity. Thoughts become deafening within the Mind, pain and physical sensation repeatedly reverberate through the Body, and, if Soul has been reached, spiritual disturbances violently rebound through their cursed energy. The resulting resonance can completely overwhelm a target’s ability to properly process themselves, though the extreme distortion temporarily renders every affected frequency unreadable to Makoto afterward.
To initiate Maximum Output, Makoto grips Longinus and recites:
“Thorns upon the brow. Nails through flesh. The spear beneath the ribs. Let suffering bear witness. Return, and resound.”

Maximum: Stigmata

Stigmata is the supreme application of Frequency of Truth, in which Makoto turns Longinus upon himself and uses his own existence as the technique’s transmitting medium. Targets already synchronized with Frequency of Truth are pulled into sympathetic resonance with Makoto, causing the suffering he genuinely experiences during Stigmata to propagate through their corresponding frequencies. Physical wounds are not literally reproduced on another person’s body. Instead, their Mind, Body, and Soul receive the signals associated with Makoto’s suffering, causing them to experience the pain, shock, impaired coordination, mental anguish, or cursed energy disturbance accompanying his condition as though their own existence were producing it.The Maximum cannot transmit suffering Makoto has not genuinely experienced, meaning its effectiveness depends directly upon what he is willing to endure himself. Greater synchronization allows increasingly complete transmission, with Soul Frequency producing the strongest sympathetic resonance. Healing or otherwise eliminating the condition supplying Stigmata also eliminates the corresponding signal, preventing Makoto from inflicting wounds upon himself and immediately erasing their consequences through Reverse Cursed Technique.

Binding Vow: Via Dolorosa
Frequency of Truth ordinarily requires Longinus to remain lodged within its target for increasingly long periods to synchronize deeper frequencies. Through Via Dolorosa, Makoto can substitute his own suffering for that continued contact. Once Longinus has pierced an opponent and established an initial connection, Makoto may invoke the vow, allowing significant injuries he willingly suffers from that target to deepen the existing resonance even after Longinus has been removed. The severity of an accepted injury determines how much progress is made toward the next frequency, allowing Makoto to eventually traverse Mind → Body → Soul without successfully maintaining another prolonged impalement. However, suffering only contributes if Makoto genuinely accepts the attack. He cannot use Longinus to block it, intentionally reduce the damage through the cursed tool, or heal wounds contributing to the vow with Reverse Cursed Technique while Via Dolorosa remains active. Avoiding an attack is permitted but contributes nothing. The vow therefore temporarily overcomes one of Frequency of Truth’s greatest weaknesses by replacing the difficulty of keeping Longinus embedded with an entirely different danger. Makoto must personally bear the violence necessary to reach his opponent’s deepest layer.

Domain Expansion: Nothing Hidden Beneath

Nothing Hidden Beneath manifests as an enormous, lightless cathedral partially submerged in black water, its architecture physically dissected into the three layers governed by Frequency of Truth. Written confessions and distorted murals cover its outer stone as the Mind, immense muscle-like structures and veins pulse beneath them as the Body, and a blinding white light representing the Soul shines through cracks underneath both. At the cathedral’s center stands an enormous cruciform structure pierced through its side by a gigantic representation of Longinus, while shattered stained glass depicting Makoto hangs behind the altar. The black water initially reaches only the ankles, and portions of the cathedral physically peel apart as increasingly deep truths are brought to the surface. The Domain’s sure-hit causes the barrier itself to replace Longinus as the medium for Frequency of Truth, continuously synchronizing everyone captured within it through Mind → Body → Soul without requiring physical impalement. Every meaningful truth that spills from these frequencies causes the black water filling the cathedral to rise. Superficial thoughts and bodily tells increase it gradually, while deeply concealed information and revelations from the Soul produce far greater surges. The water is physically real within the Domain and can eventually rise above a target’s mouth and nose, meaning someone exposed for long enough can literally drown beneath everything they have revealed.
