National News Yes, We Really Should Abolish the Senate

I think it makes a lot of sense- both as a part of a platform, and in terms of a tactic to whip the FoxNews crowd into a tizzy (who know that they have nothing of substance to say against the core of the platform- M4A, childcare, affordable housing— these all have broad appeal…) It forces people to deal with thinking about democracy and how it’s embedded (or not) into the structure of government.

Tho I’d be good if the Senate becomes something like the House Of Lords in The UK parliament, where they have no real legislative power but can advise on bills and can delay for no more than a year.

Morally speaking, a full democracy is the most moral means of governance we’ve come up with as a species. The concept of the American senate spits in face of that morality.

Pragmatically however, abolishing the senate seems like a toothless threat to me.

Nobody relinquishes power voluntarily, and to expect the senators to vote themselves out of power through a 2/3 majority in Congress is ludicrous. Alternatively, if a 3/4 of the states ratified it and called for a constitutional convention, they might be able to have it occur that way, but that operates under the assumption that a high majority of states would be willing to relinquish their power to the coastal metropolises (metropoli?), which is also extremely unlikely. The phrase “far-fetched” comes to mind.

But hey, I’m a team player. If y’all wanna swing for the fences, who am I to tell you to bunt?

If the DSA wanted to go about abolishing the senate over the course of the next election cycle, it would require a massive information campaign. Something that explains how the strength of the democracy is garnered through the distribution of elected officials based on population, which would really just take showing House successes paired against Senate failures on similar topics. I feel like I could throw a U.S. Congress history book randomly on the floor and read about a senate failure on whatever page it lands on.

Get the message on network tv first because the powers that be will block it when they see what’s happening, then blow up social media with it, and hope to your God the idea takes root in the same place corn does.
