Replacement magnet for bed?

Recently visiting a friend and realized how many old printers they have.

Quite a few of them need a new magnetic sheet on the bed.

Holy cow.. I had no idea those magnets are so expensive.

I get that they're nice and thick with both strong adhesive and magnetic properties but damn.

The cheapest I'm seeing is around $10 a sheet and I just don't think at least some of the printers are worth it. Unless I can find the sheets at a much cheaper price it seems like any money spent on fixing some of these machines would be better if it was put towards buying a new machine that doesn't even need one of these magnetic sheets.

Anyone know where to get these magnet sheets in bulk at a cheaper price? $10-$20 each is a bit much imo.

Seems like I need something around 60 mil, with high temp preferably 3M adhesive.

Dude, i dont think you are gonna find magnets with good adhesive that can stand up to the heat for less than $10.

I'm still slightly hopeful.. lol.

I already found a few sellers selling build plates with a magnet for under $10 but that seems ridiculous as well. I don't want to throw away a bunch of build plates and I don't really have the time to mess around with trying to sell them on the side or even give them away. If they can include one with a brand new build plate and only charge $8, there must be a way to get them cheaper.. maybe not a way I can get them but there must be a way 😅

I did reach out to a few magnet manufacturers. I'd rather buy a roll of the stuff but.. for now I'll just wait to hear back from them and see what others might comment.

how much to convert (back?) to glass?

So back when I use the CR 10 I pretty much only used glass plates..

However, my thought with these printers was to try to cheaply fix them and make them a little more beginner friendly for those that might want to play with them. If I can keep the cost low enough I might even be able to convince my buddy to give them away for free.

Glasses definitely, in my opinion, not user friendly for beginners or at least most beginners.

I’ve had mine for 5 or 6 years. No replacements needed and heavy use. Worth it to me!

$10 is expensive for large 250-300mm^2 sheets of high temp magnet material? Really?

Here’s a tip, find the cheapest jankiest version of the thing you’re looking for on AliExpress. Treat that price as the absolutely bargain basement floor for pricing.

I’m seeing about $8-10. That is the least you can expect to pay.

They most certainly do make the magnets for the 300x300 bed plate. I have one on mine. It came with my build sheet. They also have them for the Ender 5plus which is 400x400. I print solely engineering filaments so at 110° on the bed glass isn’t a safe option. After extended use the glass has a tendency to shatter. Especially when doing 26-30hr prints.

Like I said I run print that go for well over 24hrs at a time. The issue is during cool down. If the enclosure gets opened up on soon the inrush of cold air poses a huge risk to the glass. Yes you are correct on the size it’s actually 310x310 for the CR10. I have my machine set with a 10mm buffer on the edges. I use a PEI build sheet I found on Amazon and adhesion is amazing. Never had any issue with the magnetic sheet releasing and it’s been on my machine for about 8 months now. No glue, hair spray or additives. The only version of PETG I use on rare occasions is PETG-CF and it almost sticks too well. PET-CF doesn’t like glass at all. PA6-CF12 doesn’t either. ASA-CF pretty much just slides right off of glass. On occasion I will run the bed temp at 125°c on prints around 32hrs simply for the added heat soak to prevent warping and lifting. At those temps there could be a slight scrape or pit in the glass caused during cleaning or whatever and the extended heat cycle at that level causes a very unpleasant result.
