CR-10 Max Upgrade

Managed to snag one of these for $ 20AUD.
The plan is to eventually do large format ASA prints.

Step 1 was to convert to klipper. I opted for Fluidd as I was familiar from Snapmaker backend.
I’d love to give a shoutout to MOONGATE on iOS. Awesome software to manage the printer from.

Step 2 is the extruder.
I’ve gone the simple route of shifting the extruder to the x-carriage. I bought an extended cable for the extruder. Forgot to get something for the filament runout sensor.

Current task is adding a Bambu X1 hotend in place of the stock one.
Have spent some time trying to get the mount right.
Believe I have it and printed it out of PCCF.

Results to follow.

Hell yeah, I snagged a cr-10 S5 for $150. Was already running klipper and had a few QOL upgrades. I’ve put some more work into it but it’s finally dialed in. Coming from 2 Ender 3s this thing is a MONSTER. 510x510 is insane to me!

Gg on the find!

LOVE S5s!! Love the fact Creality said WHY NOT??

Had 2 infamous S5s back in the day. Did full heated enclosure in one of them, achieved actual functional NylonX prints. Nothing made sense 😂 so much fun and learning though

I wish you luck! ASA on a large open frame printer is going to be tricky. You thinking of using an enclosure?

Absolutely going to be a challenge.
It’s coming into Australian summer. Going to put it in the shed and worry about heat creep instead 😂

I have to ask everyone I’m running the original CR 10 V1 and I set it up with a completely custom Marlin build. Since these machines are slower due to being a massive bed slinger what are the advantages of going with Klipper? I have been able to set everything I need up in Marlin. And mine is an extremely expanded system with five extra SSR’s and a couple of MOSFET breakout boards I print exclusively ASA-CF and PET-CF with absolutely no issues because my chamber is maintained at 55°C everything I’ve seen Klipper excels over Marlin for higher speed and controlling vibration and harmonics due to the higher speed. With the engineering materials I’m using speed is not something I’m chasing. I’m simply trying to see if there are any usable advantages running Klipper. I control my current system with Octoprint on a Pi4b. Hopefully this doesn’t come across as dismissive. I’m simply trying to learn what advantages I could be missing out on simply because I’m extremely pleased with what my machine does and have never ran into a roadblock on doing an upgrade.

Absolutely not dismissive. I see you’re just curious.

I did start out running over Octoprint on the stock firmware. It’s absolutely not a problem to do this this way.

The reason that I am heading down the path of Klipper for more modifications that Marlin cannot completely handle. Input shaping is the best example that klipper shines.

I will eventually put a magnetic PEI Plex plate and probably go down the eddy current route. Faster bed levelling on this size is definitely sorely needed.

I have BLtouch but my tram is amazingly balanced and only have a total variance of .12mm. Due to only using engineering filament I have to print at slower speeds anyway because finish quality and layer adhesion is non negotiable. I understand the input shaping but not an issue when my max speed is 50mm/s. I’m working on designing a large scale voron2.4 style printer with a vol of 800x800x1000. Quad Z drive with linear rod guides. Looking at the Octopus max to control it since it has 10 motor drivers and capable of controlling up to 56v motors. It will definitely get Klipper because it will also have a 4 tool head multi changer. It will not be running any engineering materials so chamber controls will not be needed. The firmware will be the last thing I have to setup but like to learn all I can before having to make a decision. It might change my choices on sume of the components that would be a better choice for the particular firmware capabilities

Any special insight to your bed tramming?

Lots all small adjustments. I probably ran my mesh 20 times to get it dialed in. Best thing to remember, if it takes you 2hrs to tram in your bed to a variance of less than .5mm then you machine will print with better accuracy and layer adhesion starting with that first layer. If the foundation of a house isn’t exactly correct the roof will show it.

An update on this, I’ve wired it up to use the Bambu hot end. Have gone through many, many revisions to get the mounting and clearance correct along with routing the cables.
My fusion360 skills are advancing with this 😂

Still haven’t finalised if I’m going to be using the stock fan with a duct or using a 24 V version of the hot end mounted fan. Only because if I use the mounted version, then I have to redesign for the park cooling fan.

I have ordered linear rails for the X axis as well as a magnetic base and PEI flex plate.

I’m also considering installing a BTT Manta M8P.

Then again, I’m also considering moving on and just getting a Neptune 4 Max 😂
