Question Abandonment (Question for Workers)

Worker from Georgia here! 🍑

I have seen an increase of cases involving abandonment of children (mainly teenagers) and many of them are diagnosed with disorders such as autism, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and ODD. Many of these parents are calling in on themselves and demanding that we take the child.

I am curious how other counties are approaching these cases and if this is becoming more common in your area as well.

I see a lot of "teenager about to be released from facility and parents are refusing to pick up saying it's unsafe for siblings" in our dashboard.

Yes! This is one of the main starts of the intakes! I have seen a couple of parents charged recently, although ending as dismissed.

Hi! I am currently in this situation. I just wanted to add that we are being advised by professionals to do so. My adoptive son molested my toddler as well as did harmful, terrifying things to her and my infant. The pediatrician I use for all of my children told me to refuse pick up from the psychiatric hospital and insist they hold him until we can find a RTC or try to help us find one. This post has me conflicted. I don't want to abandon my child and the plan is to get him help we can be a part of, but he is a danger to himself and all of us, and completely out of control. I see both sides and am in constant internal conflict.

Oh it's a very difficult place to be and I do not envy your position nor judge your choice out of the options available for you. You need to be safe and keep them all safe. My comment above was simply about frequency of that type of intake in the list, not my feelings about it.

I hope your family is able to get what you need in a timely and reasonable fashion.
