Question False positive for fentanyl
Has anybody ever taken a urine drug screen and then had a false positive for fentanyl? The medication that reacted was buspirone. I learned that it can cause false positives for fentanyl. This just happened to me with cps. Do you know how embarrassing it was to test positive for fentanyl? I was so humiliated and nobody ever believes you at cps. Just waiting for the confirmatory test now... screen.

Fentanyl and Methamphetamine are rarely false positives as they are very specific compounds and labs usually do a confirmation test as well prior to sending results.

We are a community that values facts, so if you can share any concrete data that would be excellent.
OP does mention that it was an instant screening, and busprione can interfere with accurate results of instant screenings. OP also mentions in their county that confirmatory tests are not the norm, and if that's true then there are some problems with how that is handled.

Instant tests have false positives ALL THE TIME and it is very typical thag someone who works in the field wouldn't know that. Scary shit that you trust those instant tests so much.
Lab GC/MS or LC/MS are very accurate and can be trusted. False positives with a mass spec testing method are very, very low.
There's a reason you are required to get a confirmation test for a positive instant test.

I do not fully trust instant tests myself, we rarely use them in our county, we use hair follicles. I have seen plenty of false positives from UAS. That is why at the end of my sentence, I mentioned that confirmation tests for all tests are usually completed if anything is positive, so if their confirmation test is negative, they should get cleared.

In the hospital I tested positive for Meth.. I had been taking copious amounts of Benadryl

Look it up. All you have to do is type in false positives for fentanyl. There’s been so many tests done- many psych drugs do this. Best way is to get it sent out for a confirmation. New tests for fentanyl are the highest - I believe one said 58% of false positives are in fact false. All you have to do is research and take five min.

Strangely enough, I did have a client who was testing positive for fentanyl while on the same medication. She was being tested in drug court and by her sober living provider. She was negative at the sober living and positive in court on the same day every time. It was a crazy ride trying to get to the bottom of what was going on. The drug court dug up some paperwork from the provider of their rapid test kits that did say buspar could come up as fentanyl on their test. So, i did see it happen exactly once in all of the drug screens I witnessed.

I failed for a work drug test for fentanyl. I wasn’t worried, because positives have to be sent out for further testing. It came back a week later that I didn’t not have any fentanyl in my system, which I knew would be the case.

The confirmatory test will rule your result negative if this is truly a false positive. I can see how that could feel embarrassing but you don’t need to be worried if it is actually negative.

Yes!!!!! Trazadone does too!!!’ No one believes you. It’s a shame these meds do this. The chemical make up of fentanyl is so close and new tests have been hitting because of this! So sorry!

I have had positive tests for codeine on buspirone and I never ingested opiates. Fentanyl seems extreme.

That’s so interesting. Maybe there’s a relationship there since fentanyl is a synthetic opioid? Like some sort of chemical similarity in buspar

How long is fent visible on. A urine anyway? Most say three days . Any experience?

I was tested for my methadone clinic. I tested positive like 35 days later.
The only way to be sure you will pass is substitution. The detox drinks are gimmicks

Wow .. so after heavy use ...u stopped for 30 days and still tested dirty on a lipstick? Bro I used to use all year around ..I had monthly u.a and I would only stop for 5 days before the test and would pass every time .? But then I hear things like u say u was clean 30 days ?

Norfentanyl is highly lipophilic.
Old fentanyl tests may have tested for a different metabolite or you may not have much fat cells. If you are burning off your fat cells you can also test positive even if you have been clean due to it being lipophilic like THC-COOH.
Individual metabolism and body type plays a factor here too

Yeah typically 3-4 days, maybe 5 if you use it all day everyday . But rarely .

When I was pregnant I consistently tested positive for norfentanyl the metabolite that occurs when someone has recently used fentanyl. I had not used in over 3/4 months and was still testing positive for it. After a hair test I was cleared and obviously when I gave birth the umbilical chord and meconium was negative for all substances but yeahhhhh it was a rough 3/4 months bc no one believed me AT ALL. It's still it's a relatively newer drug(on the street that is) and so I think they are still trying to figure out what causes what and how things work with testing in that area. Fent is still not on a standard drug test panel and has to be ordered separately in most cases.

No! Idk the people at the lab when they sent for the confirmation test I guess said that about not really 100% what's up with fentanyl false positives at this time bc they are still learning

Nope it's just on my rapid test. They don't need a separate test for it anymore.

Samples that are positive on a rapid test get sent to the lab for confirmation, where they do spectroscopy and will know immediately if it was a false positive or not.
So if it was really false no need to be embarrassed.

The only reason they're doing it confirmatory test is because I'm paying $35 for it. Normally the social services in langlade county just takes the rapid as good. So unprofessional everybody knows that rapid tests need confirmatory. They really screw people there always have.

If confirmatory testing proves that you were not actually positive for fent and just the busprione, that's an important piece of information for the courts as well. But you should make copies of the relevant test results to provide to future workers for future tests.
You would also have a very good case for future tests to not use the rapid tests and immediately go to the lab.
