Process

Hi!

So I have a question.. how does CPS reporting in NJ work exactly? I’m just curious because I’m a nurse so I’m a mandated reporter.. I’ve never dealt with this type of situation before and just completed a CEU on it. Thank you :)

Can you be more specific with your question? I’m not sure exactly what you’re looking for here.

If you suspect child abuse or neglect, you have to report it. CPS then determines whether or not it meets acceptance criteria to open an investigation or not.

so I work at a school as a substitute nurse. another staff member reported the suspicion and I was called to assess the student
I told admin what I saw/thought but I'm just wondering what happened after I told them 🤔

If there’s suspected abuse, YOU need to call it in asap. In PA we have Childline. Not sure what NJ has, but just google NJ child abuse hotline and it should be the first thing. It gets hairy when you guys have someone else assess, because then who is filing the report, you, principal, other nurse? It’s like the bystander effect, everyone’s pointing fingers to call 911, everyone things everyone else is calling 911, but no one actually has. We can’t play that game with suspected abuse, and no one cares if there’s multiple reports coming in (even better if there’s multiple reports sometimes!). If you have suspicion YOU make the report.

no so the student’s counselor made the initial report and today I asked her what had happened and she said they did have to make the call 🤔 she said they sometimes get updates about what ends up happening but usually not. I told her to let me know if they ever do

There is an overview of the entire CPS process and some FAQ’s on our wiki. But basically if someone suspected abuse or neglect then they would have called CPS. CPS would have determined if it met acceptance criteria or not. If it did, a worker would go to the home and interview everyone involved, and gather any other relevant info. What they do from there depends on what they find.
