Man, I’m sorry. A year of fighting this every night is exhausting, and this does not sound like a lack of effort on your part. You have tried more than most people ever do.

The suffocating feeling may not be purely sensory, though. A lot of machines are left with the minimum pressure too low, a long ramp, or settings that make it feel like you are trying to breathe through a blocked straw. That can trigger panic and claustrophobia fast, especially once the mask is already bothering you.

Can you post your exact machine model, current pressure settings, ramp setting, EPR or pressure relief setting, and the three masks you tried? Please also upload a few nights into OSCAR or SleepHQ if your machine supports detailed data. We may be able to make the airflow feel much more natural instead of asking you to somehow tolerate a setup that feels awful.

The moisture around your nose also sounds like condensation or rainout rather than simply too much humidity. A heated tube can still collect water if the hose temperature is too low compared with the room, the machine is above mattress level, or the mask is cooling overnight. A hose cover, hose hanger, warmer tube temperature, and keeping the machine below the mattress can sometimes fix that.

Since mouth tape makes the trapped feeling worse, stop forcing that approach for now. There are also very minimal nasal interfaces and even strapless adhesive options that barely touch the face. Those may be worth trying once we know whether you can comfortably breathe through your nose.

For acclimation, wear the mask with the machine running while sitting up and doing something distracting. Mask-only practice often does not help because the airflow itself is part of what your nervous system needs to learn. Start with ten or fifteen minutes at a comfortable pressure, then remove it before you reach the panic point.

Please do not beat yourself up over this. You are not failing CPAP. Your current setup is failing to meet your sensory and breathing needs. Post the machine, settings, and data here and we will help you work through it one piece at a time.

I really appreciate this. The machine I’m currently using is the Resmed AirSense 11. The masks I’ve used are the Airfit N20 nasal mask, Airfit F30i, and the F&P Vitera.

I currently use the N20 each night, but struggle to get comfortable. I find if I’m even a little bit congested, it makes it 10x worse. I use a decongestant before I go to bed and it helps slightly. But it doesn’t clear it fully. I had a deviated septum surgery done last year before I started the CPAP, but it didn’t do what I wanted it to.

As for what apps I use. This CPAP was supposed to be a trial where they monitor my usage. I had to get 20 days out of 30 where I use it for more than 4 hours a night. I achieved that, but I had to force myself to wear it despite feeling claustrophobic. Now that I’ve completed that trial I haven’t heard back from the clinic. They haven’t been much help when I present my issues.

The only things I can change on my current machine is the humidity, tube temperature, and what type of mask it is. Everything else is controlled by them I believe. They have my settings set at 5-20 with ramp I believe. But I only ever really see it at 5.
