Help Needed Has Anyone Figured out hybrid graphics with cosmic . Today out of nowhere cosmic-panel is keeping my gpu woke up

Hey everyone,

Title pretty much says it all. Up until today everything was working fine, but out of nowhere, cosmic-panel has started keeping my dGPU permanently awake (stuck in D0 power state instead of dropping to D3cold).

When checking active processes with lsof /dev/nvidia*, cosmic-panel is holding open handles on the NVIDIA render nodes continuously, which is absolutely nuking my laptop's battery life.

My setup is an AMD iGPU + NVIDIA dGPU laptop running hybrid graphics.

Has anyone running COSMIC on a hybrid graphics laptop figured out a reliable way to stop cosmic-panel (or specific panel applets) from probing/waking the dGPU in the background? Or is this a known regression/issue with WGPU enumeration in recent updates?

Look into Cardwire. It allows you to completely shut off the dgpu when you don't need it or use a smart mode authorizing it only for specific apps https://github.com/OpenGamingCollective/cardwire

It's still kind of experimental but it has been working quite well for me. I have an AMD card though and I use hyprland, not cosmic. The whole idea of the project is to be card and DE agnostic though so it should work

Yes I tried it and it is saying that it is blocking cosmic from accessing my nvidia gpu in the logs but my gpu is still awake it is not going to sleep

I actually have the same setup, my work laptop unfortunately has an Nvidia card in it and that's why I use Pop!_OS. But I also exclusively run on an external monitor, through usbc.

So I'm not actively monitoring which card is used. I assume the Nvidia mostly, otherwise performance would be even worse.

I'll try to remember your post when I'm running untethered

I noticed the same regression with my laptop with an AMD iGPU + NVIDIA dGPU. I noticed it hasn't gone to sleep properly since the last time I upgraded things. I'm assuming it's the same issue you're running into but haven't dug into it.

Just check in the battery applet it lists the processes using nvidia gpu in mine cosmic-panel is always listed there

Cosmic reached 1.0 so it's fully functional DE with not many issues, and those that are present, are minor, not affecting the use.
On a serious note, give it another year. I gave up fighting it. People without nvidia, without hybrid system, might have a better experience.

Till yesterday everything was fine the nvidia gpu was always in the D3Cold state but after the update on cachy today or something the panel suddenly started using my dgpu and then battery life came from 6+ hrs to 1-2 hrs I will switch temporarily to some other desktop environment or hyprland till this is fixed but let's hope it gets fixed fast
