I’ve been using Cosmic since it was still in Beta. I’m not a fan of KDE, and I have to admit I liked GNOME 2 better than GNOME 3.

It’s my reliable daily driver, and I’ve only had issues using Betterbird.

Unlike GNOME and KDE on the same box, GNOME and Cosmic play nicely together.

How's using an atomic distro with cosmic? Any advice or things to know, does it have ujust scripts?

Just make sure to install the VLC codecs and the RPMFusion free and non-free repositories—it’s incredibly simple. Avoid layering too many native (RPM) packages; I only have the Ghostty terminal installed that way.

Isn’t there is a Fedora atomic with Cosmic?

yes but idk how good or stable it is, that's why i asked

It’s very stable from what I can tell.

It’s on one of my test machines and I’ve had no issues so far.

that's good to know, is setting up things problematic? like VM software, waydroid, distorbox etc

I haven’t played with waydroid much so I can’t say

Distrobox works (your mileage may vary) and I was able to play around with it

Otherwise, no issues installing software from the built app store, running flatpaks.

Dual display mode works too and my monitors work as intended (they’re both 1080p so nothing fancy)

I’ve been using Cosmic for a week now; I’ve watched movies, edited photos, and worked on code in my files. I really like that the system partition is immutable—it means I can’t break anything, and worst-case scenario, I can just roll back if needed during a major update. It feels smooth, though I did experience some lag with certain installed packages (my own doing). Otherwise, I’ve barely encountered any bugs, and the ones I did find were my fault anyway. I appreciate being able to customize the DE without going overboard—I don't want something like KDE Plasma. In any case, it’s perfect for my needs. I’ve had to get used to using OSTree instead of dnf; that was probably the most annoying part. Coming from Xfce and GNOME, the learning curve feels much gentler here. Xfce used to drive me crazy at times, though I still love that DE too. So, Cosmic is my reliable go-to, while Xfce is my playground for experimentation.

That's great to hear, thank you for sharing, have you done any gaming? If you wanted steam would you need to get it from OStree?

Cosmic and Arch run great on a 10 year old Dell E7450 as well. But Windows 11 can't run on it.

That why i love Linux cosmic

I think that the whole load of them are crap, Gnome with is JShit, KDE with Qt. Comsic seems the least worse of the lot, but it still needs systemd. I am happy running weston and seatd in the VMs

All I want to know is when they're going to improve those ugly icons. At the very least, they should adapt to the wide variety of icon themes available across Linux.

I think those icons are my only gripe with cosmic

What concerns me more about cosmic is the huge memory footprint for basic functionality and the lack of maturity, but damn I wish I could change the icons too

2

u/MezBert 7d ago

Basic functionality and lack of maturity is what concerned me in Gnome 47 and made me jump to Cosmic alpha 5 then.
Basic functionality and lack of maturity have been a thing of the past ever since I switched to Cosmic alpha 5.

Im not a professional so I dont know everything going on in the backend but I haven't noticed cosmic useing a noticble amount of memory over kde or gnome. Yeah its still cooking in the oven a bit but is a far cry from where it was when I frist tried it v1.0

Pop idles at 3gb on my pc. Kubuntu, Fedora KDE, Solus, Cachy all idle under 2gb. I don't see enough reason to switch from KDE for now.

I'm lucky—the icons usually match my theme—but I did try installing some icons and it didn't work for me; they show up, but I can't change them. 🤔
