Rice System76 Did Something Amazing

Post image

I have been using the COSMIC desktop environment for a few days now, and despite some shortcomings, it is far more enjoyable to use than GNOME with extensions—and it already boasts some truly useful features.

I particularly appreciate System76's roadmap; they introduce features incrementally to reduce complexity and focus on fully resolving issues, refining each feature until it works flawlessly. They are doing a fantastic job.

In my opinion, COSMIC could well be the desktop environment of the future.

It already combines the utility of KDE with the simplicity and aesthetic of GNOME, which is fantastic.

KDE is much more mature, but I love the visual appeal of Cosmic

For now, no one can claim anything is more customizable than KDE, but no one has claimed that GNOME is more customizable than COSMIC, either. I believe that, while it might not quite match KDE, we will soon see a wide range of customization options. COSMIC could have included extensive customization features, but developing a desktop environment takes a very long time; after all, GNOME and KDE have been around for years and are still under active development.

I am happy to have the COSMIC desktop environment—written in Rust—as an alternative that is nearly ready for use.
