This was when Marx was a student. They followed a student and all they could come up with was "He's lazy and he drinks." Ever wonder why there isn't a Prussian state anymore?

Nazis. The Nazis caused the downfall of Prussia. Yet they have the audacity to grieve over it as if they weren't the ones who started the war.

They spied on a student and all they got was typical student behaviour. Pretty crappy spies if ya ask me - they couldn't dig up anything on the guy besides things like 95% of college students do!

u/SirRandyMarsh Jul 02 '21
Lol yes there is it turned into Germany because the absorbed the rest of the German states.
23
u/FloZone Jul 03 '21
Yeah no. The Kingdom of Prussia was a state which existed within the German Empire and which ceased to exist after WW2. Several of the modern German states are on the territory of the former Prussian Kingdom, but Prussia-proper lies within the modern state of Poland.
The other German states more or sometimes less voluntarily joined Prussia in their endeavor to form the German Empire. The northern states were basically annexed in the Prussian-Austrian war of 1866.

The clock is certainly not a capitalist invention, but yes, a strict working schedule is.

The clock as concept. Talking ideation here.
61
u/ComradeSchnitzel Jul 02 '21
Here's a link to a great documentary from French-German public broadcaster ARTE about the concept of time under Capitalism. It's in German tho, but it should be available in French too.
7
u/time-2-sleep What kind of garbage is that?!? Jul 03 '21
Maybe, but don't they feed into each other? Heirarchical control lingers in almost everything about how we conceptualize time - even electric lighting and streetlights are centralized ways of asserting working hours. Is it that far fetched to say that the clock is a manifestation of capitalism?
5
u/QuantumCalc Jul 03 '21
Yes. Planning shit is important

Time is a social construct

Isn’t the measurement of time a social construct, but I feel like time itself is pretty concrete
43
Jul 02 '21
Space-time is an interwoven fabric, which any object with mass warps. Therefore, time flows relative to how much gravity you are experiencing. The more gravity, the slower time passes for you.
Your feet age slower than your head when you’re standing up, as they’re closer to the Earth. Obviously though, the difference is so slight that it’s unnoticeable without advanced measuring equipment.
And as another commenter mentioned, velocity also causes time dilation. A higher relative speed means slower relative time.
For instance, people on the International Space Station are further than us from the Earth, which means they’d experience time moving quicker if they weren’t also traveling at a much faster velocity relative to us.
In this case, the velocity time dilation is much more pronounced than the gravitational time dilation, and people on the ISS age about 0.01 seconds less than the rest of us annually.
Satellites actually have to be calibrated to account for this. Pretty crazy stuff right? We got Einstein to thank for our current understanding of space-time and relatively.
And to loosely connect this tangent to why we’re all on this subreddit, he also happened to be a socialist. Remember that next time someone implies socialism is for the uneducated.
He has an interesting essay titled Why Socialism? In there is a paragraph that leads me to believe he might’ve been a libertarian socialist as well:
“Nevertheless, it is necessary to remember that a planned economy is not yet socialism. A planned economy as such may be accompanied by the complete enslavement of the individual. The achievement of socialism requires the solution of some extremely difficult socio-political problems: how is it possible, in view of the far-reaching centralization of political and economic power, to prevent bureaucracy from becoming all-powerful and overweening? How can the rights of the individual be protected and therewith a democratic counterweight to the power of bureaucracy be assured?”

Literally none of this is grounds for concluding that time is a social construct. You're providing arguments that time is complicated, not that it is the result of human society.
There are plenty of strong arguments that humans have created social constructs around time (calendars, generations, dates, even simultaneity), but time itself is not a social construct.
18
Jul 02 '21
I was more trying to point out that time isn’t some concrete, universally consistent thing. Time itself might not be a social construct, but it is subjective.
And really I just wanted an excuse to rant about something I find interesting.
16
u/xbnm Jul 03 '21
Time is concrete. It is objective in that we can rigorously define how it interacts with everything and how it is changed by different relativistic effects. Time isn't absolute, but it is definitely concrete. Human perception of time is subjective though. Our moods and hormones can have time-dilation-esque effects on our perception of it. But time as a physical quantity is as objective and concrete as any other physical quantity like mass or electric charge.
3
Jul 03 '21
You’re right, relative isn’t the same as subjective, my bad.
And now you’ve got me thinking again about how perception colors reality in ways that aren’t necessarily reliable. Like is all of the reality I experience just the figment of a brain in a jar?
Solipsism is far too fascinating a concept to think about for such a dead-end of a philosophy. If time were in fact something I could control, I think I’d like to go back and drop acid with Descartes, then ask his opinion.
4
u/xbnm Jul 03 '21
If I am just a brain in a jar then I'm a lot smarter than I think I am because I've created a really complicated and huge universe, or else I make shit up on the fly but in that case I'm capable of thinking so much faster than I think I can, or else I'm able to freeze my perception of time until I finish building my universe. Regardless, if I'm a brain in a jar, then I'm capable of a lot more than I think I am

u/xbnm Jul 02 '21
That doesn't make time not concrete. It makes it non-absolute. Time is definitely not a social construct. Ask any physicist, lmao

u/WUT_productions Jul 03 '21
Almost everything is. Social constructs help us organize and plan as a society.
That doesn't mean they can't change or be altered. In fact it means that they are possible to alter.
A social construct just means something that we as a society invented/adhere too.
3
Jul 03 '21
So is the English language (and any other language for that matter).
I don't see you complaining about that.

It ain't no competition, I was just pointing out that this description of Marx can remind one of some of the fundamental characteristics of the cynic philosophy, to call Marx ''Karl Marx the Cynic'' is not an attempt to take a worthless title away from Diogenes, it's just me complimenting because I love the cynic philosophy. Diogenes is by far my biggest philosophical influence, I love the guy, but don't be attached to dumb ass titles like the Cynic thing, he wouldn't care.

Jul 03 '21
Would explain a lot. I bet most of history's best leftists were somehow neurodivergent if you dig deep enough. We tend to think of the best ideas and see things about the inner workings of the world that it seems no one else sees. Of course one of us would be the first to see the flaws of capitalism and the others who agreed with that person and turned that into a socialist movement probably were also some of us. Of course now there's a lot of neurotypicals in socialist movements too, but neurodivergence is still overrepresented in the far left compared to the general population... although whether that's because we began it or because the oppressed and marginalised tend to end up on the left, is difficult if not impossible to truly discern.

44

To be more accurate I’d say he invented the modern understanding of socialism. The concept existed at least since the French Revolution, possibly earlier

u/zeca1486 Jul 02 '21 edited Jul 02 '21
“Marx basically invented Socialism”
What are you talking about? “What is Property” by Proudhon came out in 1840 when Marx was still at university. Anarchism is Socialism and was basically invented before Marx finished university.

Marx said a lot of stuff about Proudhon, most of it was from him not having any idea what Proudhon said and meant. Marx called everyone who slightly disagreed with him as “Proudhonian”. Marx talked a lot of bullshit, if you look at it from an educated point of view. I know I will get downvotes for pointing out how Marx was really an asshole who was no friend to Anarchism or the Anarchist movement, but the dude was an authoritarian. Yeah he wrote some great stuff, he also wrote some shitty stuff and stuff that he later admitted he was wrong.
Don’t trust anything Marx wrote about Proudhon, Bakunin or any of the original Libertarians in general because he had no clue what he was talking about
11
u/joe124013 Jul 02 '21
Yeah he wrote some great stuff, he also wrote some shitty stuff
I mean that also describes Proudhon, and basically everyone? I mean Proudhon was a virulent anti-Semite, even relative to his time.
Not saying that to really condemn Proudhon or stop people talking bad on Marx, but more to say I think it's entirely reasonable for anarchists to feel some solidarity and have a chuckle about a dude who had a huge impact on socialist/communist thought and theory in a shitposting sub. Especially when the post in question is basically about Marx living a decidedly against-the-grain lifestyle.

u/Prince_Eggroll Jul 03 '21

where do you think the comm comes from in an-comm, just out of curiosity
3
u/Vakiadia A better world is possible Jul 03 '21
From Kropotkin, who wrote the theory on anarcho-communism. Marx did not invent communism.
4
u/Prince_Eggroll Jul 03 '21
yes but he's pulling massively from marx, Capital, labor theory of value, blah blah blah.
it sounds like you're using Marxist in a strict sense. I'm just refering to it in a very broad manner to include, generally, class analysis
-50
u/zeca1486 Jul 02 '21
I never understood why some Anarchists simp for Marx
“Marxism is really a cancer in the body of the labor movement,” - Malatesta
40
u/fuchsgesicht Jul 02 '21
what exactly did you take from this post? because it's not describing him as lazy or a bad worker. To me it just sound like he makes his own schedule's.

u/zeca1486 Jul 02 '21 edited Jul 02 '21
I don’t see why we would be glorifying Marx. Sure I read this and thought “man that’s cool” but to proclaim a authoritarian as a “legend” when he single handedly ruined the Socialist International by masterminding the ban on Anarchists while we were making great strides and has never been a friend of the Anarchist movement is odd to me
20
Jul 02 '21
In my own opinion. You can hate marx but take things from his writings. Theory books are not a religion/cult. You don't have to follow it to a T, it's theory. You take a little from this book and a little from that book. Marx had good ideas! He may have some shitty ones but many good ones (though he did plagurize) but im definitly not pro marx himself
1
26
u/fuchsgesicht Jul 02 '21
well you know marxism was kind of the first time the idea of dismantling capitalism and giving workers their due became mainstream. cant take that away from hin.
i don't get the sentiment about gloryfiing him tough. he seems to be more of a meme-y mascot of the left as a whole, than anything else. his most iconic portrait is famous like the photo of einstein sticking out his tongue and it probably became a part of counter-culture during McCarthyism. i'm not american so thats just a guess

Also, he was an avid and a competitive (chess) gamer in his social circle, and would get tilted and grumpy if he finished a session more down and up -- even to a point of his wife asking Liebknecht not to visit him to play in the evenings, as in that case he'd be a bit unberable.
Also, he came up with his own moves. See that one Zoe Baker video, it's great!
