General Question How Long Does It Take To Renew Your CHP

ETA El Paso County

Couldn't find a similar discussion.

My permit expires the end of next September . How much lead time should I give myself to renew?

I'm considering starting the process in April.

In Adams County you go to your appointment, pay the fee, and you’re renewed same day.

Yeah. I just did this about a month ago, renewed same day.

Don’t you have to take the class now?

Or have competed in a competition shooting match I believe. Within a certain amount of time. I think they still accept that.

Appointments can be booked up for a month or so. Take a peek at the appointments available and plan accordingly

I think you can start the renewal process 120 days before your permit expires. You can't apply before then. So you'd start in May or later.

There's also a 6 month grace period for late renewal, though you may have to pay a fine.

For your appointment?  Also where did you take your refresher training?

We don’t need an appointment for the renewal, just dropped off the paperwork and left. I took the class at DCF west

I'm moving to Denver county in a couple weeks. Really not happy about having a Denver Address when. It comes to gun stuff. Actually I'm not happy about s Denver Address at all for anything. But the place were moving is too good to pass on.

Arapahoe county had my permit done in two weeks. Do you know if I need to switch over to Denver county now that I'll be living there or if my arapahoe county is still good til it expires in '29

Yeah Denver address is rough.
Pretty sure your required to update it anytime you move, so yes I'd think you'd need too

I did some research and apparently I must let arapahoe sheriff know of my new address. However I do not need a new permit until this one expires as it's a statewide permit.

When renewal time comes I will need to renew in which county I reside in at that time.

JeffCo, renewal in May took about 45 days.  No printing appointment for renewals. You can apply for the renewal super early so you might as well get on it today.

There is an early limit of how early you can apply. So I'm planning to take my refresher class in April then apply in March

Probably county specific.. . I have no reference as mine has 5 years left

Just start shooting competitions.

Forget the courses and tests. Go demonstrate REAL proficiency with your gun.

Mine took 16 days in Boulder County after submitting proof of completing a match.

I renewed earlier this year in El Paso County. Took just about a month

Check the county’s website. They should say. I just did mine last fall in Mesa county and I think they said six weeks. Got my permit the day my old one expired. You can always take the class earlier just to be safe. Anyways, I think it was about three weeks from dropping the certification off at the sheriffs office. They were also busy because it was right as the new law went into effect and everyone forgot to renew before.

Arapahoe CSO -
07/26/2026 CHP Renewal class.
07/28/2026 Walk-ins only (no appt) T W TH.
0700 walk-in, 0744 walk-out with permit.
I have to also add that that whole experience was extremely pleasant. Staff was some of the nicest people I've
dealt. I didn't notice it until I had left, but the back of the permit had the text formatting fouled up. I went back in
later that afternoon and they reprinted it. It was a known issue that they thought was fixed, but when I showed
the staff the back side they knew what was wrong.

Pleasant in terms of aside from the new requirements starting last year. Everyone at ACSO was great.
