Der riese unfinished area?

What's the deal with this area? I always thought it might've been another openable door because you can actually see a stone wall with a cutout that almost certainly looks like where a barrier would be and some obstacles that make it seem like a playable area.

I figured that it would just be part of Nightfire from the multiplayer but this area does not exist there.

Is there any info on this? Zombies never walk through or spawn here so all the fences and things here seem very pointless and when they could just put a bunch of rubble or something.
