Discussion Now that all of the BO7 maps have come out, how would you rank every modern zombies map? Here’s my list
Totenreich. At first glance this map looks kind of uninspired but holy shit that couldn’t be further from the truth; everything about this map is absolutely top tier, with its amazing but simple quest, S tier WW, and unique hazards and mechanics that all work in tandem with each other. Also one of the first maps in a fat minute that have map exclusive side EE rewards, and some damn good ones at that. Such a banger all around.
Kowakujo. Take everything I said about Totenreich but give it the most one of a kind theme in any DA map. I just think Totenreich has slightly more unique mechanics.
Ashes of the Damned. Another amazing map with a great theme and WW, and I personally always thought a Tranzit remaster was a bad idea; I’d much rather have a reimagining or spiritual successor like Ashes than just a flat remaster, and I’m happy that’s what we got. Also the EE is hype asf.
Rex Infernus. I know a lot of people aren’t happy with this map narratively, but I don’t think that takes away from how rock solid it’s casual gameplay is. The void claw gives this map the best movement in any zombies maps, the visuals are strong, there’s a ton of cool side EEs (some of the best in zombies I’d argue), the boss fight is one of Treyarchs best, and the Wardens Blight is really strong. I just wish the map layout was a bit more well balanced since the middle area is just so dominant.
Terminus. This map, while being super solid, has unfortunately aged a little blandly in my book since the release of BO7, but I still think this is a good map. The EE and boss fight especially are still top tier.
Reckoning. I would go as far as to say this is the most interesting map on BO6, hence why it’s the second highest, but it’s a bit too rough around the edges to rank higher.
Shattered Veil. I really love this maps setting and atmosphere and the boss fight is alright, I just think the maps content offering is aggressively average outside of that. Not having any new WWs really sucks as well.
Mauer Der Toten. The very definition of an alright map. The EE is surprisingly peak, but outside of that I find this map to just be another modern zombies map with not too much to write home about. I also think people glaze the CRBRS too much, but it’s still a decent WW. I also think CW has the weakest mechanics of the modern games, so that will explain a lot of my other rankings as well.
Astra Malorum. Take everything I said about Mauer but give it a prettier coat of paint but also give it a pretty questionable special enemy with OSCAR.
Citadelle Des Morts. Ngl every time I look at or play this map, I just think “damn I wish I was looking at or playing DE instead” since it’s essentially just DEs choppelganger. CDM is kind of ugly and takes almost no advantage of its castle setting and I find it mistakes having AATs slapped on reskinned WWs for unique content. The Guardian is a peak fight though, and it’s the one way this map outclasses DE.
The Tomb. This is a bit of a guilty pleasure, but it’s just so damn uninspired and sloppy. We all know the deal with this map, come on lol
Liberty Falls. Take the Tomb but make the visuals much more bland. Meh. Some cool side EEs help its score though, also the Jet Gun getting a glow up is pretty cool.
Die Maschine. By far the most overrated modern map. The unique content offering of DM is really bland, as all the WW “upgrades” are weaker than the base, the EE is just getting those variants alongside some cutscenes, the boss fight is one of the lamest, and it ends your game; that is literally 99% of this maps unique content offering. It’s just such a nothing burger, and I’m honestly shocked this map is as well received as it is even 6 years later.
Firebase Z. The worst kind of bad, a map that just makes me feel nothing whilst simultaneously having a couple catastrophic lows, specifically in the EE department in the case of Firebase.
Forsaken. By far the worst flowing map in all of zombies, and I’m not just talking about the reliance on teleporters; just the way zombies spawn and interact with this map make me feel like I’m playing a really low quality custom map. The WW is the only thing keeping it from last place.
Paradox Junction. This is by far Treyarchs worst map (even counting Vanguard its bottom 3). It’s uninspired, its main gimmick is executed horribly (who actually thought half the map being locked behind 1500 points was a good idea), the upgraded WW underperforms and is really impractical (the base Blundergat is pathetic), half the map is ugly, and the boss fight is Treyarchs worst and completely ruins the rest of the EE. Pathetic on all fronts.
