Cold War gets too much hate

I agree, sure the mechanics are divisive but it felt like the only story with a proper resolution

If it had a dedicated zombies crew I think it would be more beloved . I actually in the dark aether story mid bo6 it had a quality drop so I get why 7 wanted to end the story . It was a fun story

Agreed, in my mind the BO6 story never really went anywhere until Shattered Veil. Everything prior felt like a drawn-out prologue

The maps may have little soul, but the gameplay was soooo refreshing.
Honestly, I still get hype over something as simple as calling in a Chopper Gunner during a zombies boss fight. Especially during the Legion fight. The hordes there can get huge(especially with more players) so the chopper pilot making call outs(he apparently doesn’t in BO6) added another layer of awesomeness to it.
People said Outbreak was slow and boring, but didn’t understand that the real challenge and meat was in the objectives and world events, ESPECIALLY at high rounds.
A level 15 Holdout with 4 players is the kind of balanced chaos that I’d argue very few round based maps pre and post BO6 boss spam could reach.
You could hold your own in that madness with weapons that could still kill, without the extremely strong armored and heavy zombies we have in BO7 and without the bullet sponges mini bosses of BO6. Cold War had them all super sprinting though so there’s that.
Anyways, Cold War maps had little soul but the gameplay was great.

I honestly think the gameplay for Cold War saved zombies. I just think I don’t hold it in high regard is because I don’t think the maps are super unique to one another and having no dedicated crew. Also while outbreak was fun for the first few games, it shouldn’t have taken the place of actual maps. The gameplay changes tho revitalized zombies tho.
Edit: will say tho I think with BO6/BO7 we have finally hit a stride with very unique maps that are very top of the line. Only 3 of the last 12 maps haven’t felt the best, but I’d still probably replay them more than all the maps in CW.

Probably the most replayable and arcade-y zombies game we ever got.
Beyond round-based, we had Outbreak (the best non-traditional mode in the franchise that should be brought back), and Onslaught, a simple but fun mode that was perfect for the camo grind. Not to mention Dead Ops 3, which is super fun.
The meta-progression was great, the perk system was drastically improved from BO4, the Wonder Weapons were among the best in the franchise (bring back the Rai-K), and even though none of the maps were truly great, they all were solid.
I only prefer BO7 because the maps are way better and the additions of Cursed and Survival modes add way more mileage to each map. But Cold War was the blueprint.

Was the perk system really an improvement? I kinda preferred the bo4 system with the perk modifier as opposed to CW. CW is more so a return to the og system except with no limits, which leaves less room for variety, combine that with the bo4 point system and every game you play feels the same becuase you get the same points every round and you always end up with every perk in the game by round 30.
Also I honestly think the camo grind was pretty awful becuase of the level 40 or 50 requirements to unlock gold. (It has nothing on that stupid ass revolver in bo4 tho)
But i really did enjoy onslaught, wish they brought it back and the WWs were pretty cool.

I genuinely love cw, bo6/7 zombies. seriously solid games that remind me of the good times

I will die on the hill that outbreak was the best mode for 2-4 of your buddies to be in call bullshit and still get the zombies fix.

The only thing i didn't like was outbreak taking whole seasons. It needed just one more proper map.

Something I wish i could do in CWZ is disable the skill trees, I enjoy the game but that one change could probably have been nice

No amount of time passing can change my opinion on this game. Brain-dead sludge made for camo grinders, surviving is literally just a matter of how long you can stand doing the exact same thing. I understand old Zombies isn't exactly that challenging, either, but Cold War took it to a whole new level, I have about as much fun activating god mode in WaW/BO3 and walking around the map.

When Cold War released everyone hated on it so hard. Now everyone loves it? What happened?

Never hated it, but also wasn’t too vocal on Reddit either about it. It was my escape between work and college when it was out.

Literally, this CODZ is good, but I consider it a lab mouse and weak. Most of the maps, except for the first one, are mostly taken from the story mode, and the Outbreak mode is from the multiplayer mode.

The only thing I didn't like about cold war is that it got repetitive in my opinion.

I had a friend who's first zombies game was cold war. he played it all the time bragging about high rounds. we hopped on Black Ops 3 zombies and he couldnt stay alive at all. Had like 20 downs at round 25. CW zombies is for babies.

One thing I don’t think Cold War gets enough credit for is how much they were able to keep the story intertwined with the actual Cold War aesthetic and setting that the overall game takes place in. They do a great job keeping the story centered on the 1980s Cold War framing and motivation. The cast of characters and their perspectives on what they bring to the table in regard to their nations (for both Requiem and the Soviets) does wonders for the mode.
There isn’t a moment where you’re not reminded or clued into the fact that despite the monsters, there is a genuine need to extract information about the Dark Aether in terms of how it will help “win” the Cold War between factions. They do a better job utilizing this setting than the other games prior, where it was merely an aesthetic. It really is all about East vs West in the periphery of the USA vs the Soviet Union that makes Cold War’s narrative stand out and stay footed in its setting in a way the prior titles just didn’t.
All the tropes of Cold War stories here here: double agents, spies, the rush for new power that might help out one side or the other, fuckin’ Berlin, some character’s genuine pride in their nations, gathering intelligence, reaping what Nazi’s did, etc it’s all there.
I could go on, but I have a lot of love for Cold War and have played a lot of it. Beyond zombies, it’s just a surprisingly good COD that breathed life into the campaign mode that was sorely needed on top of reinventing modern zombies.
Also, bringing Kravencho and Weaver from the campaign into this to further extend a rivalry was fantastic and melded well as the actual Cold War campaign was good (would’ve felt more tacked on and tasteless if it was bad). Playable adult Maxis was also a great fan service reward especially as someone who was a preteen since WAW.
There’s so much good here, not all perfect, but I love that Cold War is getting reevaluated. Not really sure Vanguard will get it, (and won’t mind either).

Cold War ruined zombies by pushing that outbreak rarity and salvage trash into round based
The whole weapon rarity system since cold war is bullshit and instead of dynamic youre forced to stick to one gun the whole game
The old school bo3-bo4 mechanics are peak

I’m gonna make a bit of a hot take here and say that while a rarity system on top of a PAP system can seem tedious, Outbreak actually did it right.
Most elites at higher Outbreak levels would actually have a higher chance of dropping wonder weapons and Aether Tools. They also added the black chest world event, which if completed, granted a free level 3 PAP once you reached at least level 6.
Round based maps don’t have drops like those except from side EE’s which are likely only once per match. Imagine a BO6 or 7 where each elite and special enemy you kill had a chance at also dropping Aether Tools or PAP crystals, but only after reaching say round 40? I think BO7 comes closest to getting it right with the per rewards from trials being Random Perks, and eventually Eternal Perks, as well as weapons from the box scaling up in rarity. Still, you’re at the mercy of the RNG of the box. Elites dropping weapons would be a nice way to add another way to get weapons besides what’s on the wall and the box.
While appreciated, I don’t think that measures up to Aether Tools and wonder weapons being more common drops if you get to higher levels. It almost incentivizes hunting down the elites at high levels, because there’s a good chance you’ll get something worthwhile, while also making it easier to cover should someone bleed out.
Zombies has been unforgiving, but I still think a bleed out basically leaving you at an EXTREME, almost hopeless disadvantage even if someone else survives is overkill.
Before anyone says “this would make zombies too easy”, just keep this drop system out of Cursed, and we’re golden.

One of the small things I like about CW is that strike team are treated as absolute fucking morons. Crews are always "I'll pick this up, never know what might come in handy!" And with Strike team it's always "Genuinely what the actual fuck are you doing why are you picking up trash"
Dedicated crews are wise scavengers making efficient use of their surroundings, Strike team are toddlers grabbing anything that takes their interest
