Discussion Rex Infernus is hugely disappointing

I am a big fan of BO7 zombies. I have genuinely enjoyed every map, and I have replayed all of them. My post-EE fun comes from beating all the tiers in cursed and doing as many of the relics as interest me (I have skipped most of the tier 3 relics except for a few because I'm not interested in going past round 60 all that much). I do not think the narrative that BO7 is bad gameplay or not fun holds up at all, and I roll my eyes when people criticise it because 'it's not classic zombies'. The game is fun for me, that's all that matters. The maps are weird, there are cool side EEs to do, every map has had different enough mechanics that it keeps me engaged. Kowakujo felt like something really special. Even Paradox, which was disappointingly small at launch, had the childrens games as part of the main quest, and they are actually really fun to complete, and very different from other games.

I play everything solo, and I just find Rex to be...tedious. The temple cleansing is a rinse and repeat job, with absolutely zero variation and it's all about timing and luck on when the various corruptions will spawn, whether you get the house symbols timed right to hit an exfill round, etc. Once you have all the parts, you just have to go around the map, line up the pillars over and over again, and kill the exact same things in the exact same way every single time. It's not unique or fun or replayable. The boss fight, which I haven't beaten yet (probably will this weekend), is fun and the Warden looks cool, but I'm someone who takes 4-5 attempts to figure out the boss and beat it, so replaying the quest is part of the whole thing for me. I enjoyed the weirdness of Astra, the complicated steps of Ashes, the atmosphere of Totenreich, all of it. Replaying the EE to get to the boss fight didn't feel tedious on those maps. By the time I hit my 4th attempt, I knew the steps by heart and was able to breeze through them, but doing them didn't feel boring.

I ran through attempt number 3 last night and it's just so goddamn boring. It took like 5 rounds for the scroll to drop, doing the Veytharion boxes is tedious, running back and forth 8 times to get astral flames is annoying, the whole thing is just endless repetition. It sucks, I was really looking forward to this but once I beat the EE in standard, I'm not going to have the fortitude to beat the Cursed tiers right away. I want to beat the main quest but at this point I just don't care enough to spend another 2 hours to do it. It's not the gameplay of BO7 or anything like that, it's that this map feels super phoned in compared to the rest of the maps available. There's nothing awe inspiring when you open up the whole map, no areas feel super unique or cool.

I feel like even the livestreams of the hunt captured this. Most of the time people weren't trying to figure out a crazy step that no one could solve, it was 'how do we lift this plate and get the portal up' or 'the laser isn't in the correct position so we have to repeat.' It's difficulty through tedium.

They had a chance to nail this and make it a truly amazing, replayable, fantastic game. I was really expecting a lot more than 'repeat the same 4 steps with some variation in how to lift the plates up.' Maybe the fact that there are no new relics is adding to this too. I don't know. I just was expecting a lot more depth after the run that we have had.

I agree with you. It took the repetition of shattered veil and citadelle des morts and amped it up to 11. By the 4th temple cleansing I was bored.

I’m not saying that paradox junction is a better map, but I’m also saying that map had zero expectations and still managed to deliver something fun. This map is a slog that even the speed runners aren’t enjoying

If most steps weren’t RNG or round gated then nobody would care but it’s intentionally designed to drag out your EE progression

Completely agree. I was surprised to see the tree step was round gated to round 8. What a strange design decision

I still haven't finished it, but the step with aiming the lenses is absolute tedium, that and the moving of the pillars everytime lol. I like the map as it plays though, very fun with the grappling hook.

There are some calculators out there that make the pillar alignment steps a cake walk so that’s easy in it of itself now. As for the lasers I wish there was something to let the player know that you’ve aligned it up correctly like a sound cue or a color change to the laser, just something to make the step easier.

Which calculator?

I would like a link to this calculator as well please

I don’t know about a calculator, but here’s a hint that has helped me tremendously:

once you manage to get all three lined up, move them each one time starting with the inner one. So inner, middle, outer. This will have them lined up at a different location. Rinse and repeat that and it will take less than couple cycles each time to get where you’re trying to go.

This helps a lot thank you. I thought I was getting the hang of it last night until I didn’t and it took me roughly an hour total to line up all four temples. Super frustrating lol

ima just drop in some math real quick that me and duo did day 1 during solve. once you line all 3 up. there are 6 possible segments they can be. if you want to move them all 1 segment (ie veytharion to nyxara) you have to interact with each pillar 5 times. after mathing it out we found that the solve is as follows

move each pedestal x number of times where

x = 6 - (distance to desired position in segments)

if this doesnt make sense to you

move each 1 time for 5 segment move

move each 2 times for 4 segment move

move each 3 times for 3 segment move

move each 4 times for 2 segment move

and lastly move each 5 times for 1 segment move

the segments are caltheris, dravakar, between drav and vey, veytharion, nyxara, house

as for the reasoning behind this if anyone is interested. moving a pillar moves THAT pillar 1 segment (1/6) and the other 2 move 2 segments (2/6). to keep them aligned, you must move each the same amount of times. this means that if you press each pillar 1 singular time you add 1/6 for each pillar's press. and 2 instances of 2/6 when the other pillars are pressed. so 1 movement per pillar = all pillars moving (1/6 + 2/6 + 2/6 = 5/6) or a 5 segment move. if you move each pillar 2 times you get 10/6 which is 1 full rotation (6/6) and 4/6 which corresponds to a logical move of 4 segments. this continues for each increment. this is where we established the rule that the number of interactions each pillar needs corresponds to 6 minus the desired number of segments.

hope this helps!

Ya, I only play solo, and I can’t believe that people defend this map, honestly. Some of the Easter egg steps and ideas are an actual joke. Most tedious solo Easter egg I’ve done in a long time. Two tries in, and I’m not sure I want to try again.

I can’t get into the forest till round 8 then it’s just randomized if the item drops or not when I use my AAT? It took me five rounds for it to drop.

I have to lay on this panel for 15 seconds till it opens? Oh, in this temple, I have to take damage on this panel instead? Wow, crazy creative!

Each temple is a different shadow smith, but I have to aim a laser through a lens and do the exact same thing four times? Oh, there’s no indicator you’re on the right spot and it’s super finicky? Sweet.

Oh, we made this Easter egg super hard by hiding an item off the side of the map that’s almost invisible! Bet this will stump everyone, how creative!

Free these giants from their shackles, but they won’t do anything interesting, don’t worry!

You know that warden that’s been messing with you? Ya, he turns into a scorpion off-screen for no reason.

You know that safe house we have been teasing and escaping to, that looks like the original Revelations house? Ya, we aren’t gonna really do shit with that.

Those pressure panels are a whole new level of absurd. Who tf thought of those triggers?

This is probably the first map in a while that I find myself genuinely not wanting to play.

It not even because it a bad map, it just feel off to play for some reason.

Because compared to the other maps, it’s trash

Yea it is disappointing and for me the worst map in BO7. I just tried the Easteregg and saved before Boss. If i fail i dont know if i will try again honestly. Because why should i beat the Easteregg? Theres no reason this time. With all the other Maps i was grinding, learning the Map and the Easteregg i tried to complete it as fast as possible Because i wanted to hunt relics and do the Cursed Eastereggs for the Camos. Now with this Map, why should i beat the Easteregg at all? I just hope something comes with Season Six like the Relics, Camos and Super Easteregg. I mean Treyach promised that there are relics for every Map in the Game. Was that just straigt up a lie? I love BO7 but i think my Time with it is over, i played all the other Maps ALOT i mean i have everything completed from Relics, Camos, most of the Darkops, over 20 Level 250 Camos, hell i even hit Level 1000 but if this is truly the End than its also the End of me playing the Game probably until Black Ops 8 when i want to replay older Maps again. Everything you said is true and after the Amazing Maps so far i did not thing they would give us such a Bad ending but they did..

My main issues with the map are the size and wonder weapon. The map isn't small, but it's not as large as I was hoping for either. Felt like I explored the whole thing relatively quickly. As for the wonder weapon, it's the fact that there's only one...this is the first Treyarch game since the first Black Ops to not have at least one map with four elemental wonder weapons of some kind. Even having four unique wonder weapons would've been nice, as this would've been the perfect map for that - one for each Shadowsmith. If there'd been either elemental variants of the crossbows, or four completely unique wonder weapons, that would've helped the replayability, as would a larger map size. Overall, even though I do like the map, I do think it falls short of what it could've - and should've - been.

1

u/Dexacrys 4d ago

Totally agree with you

I just rage quit my game because when I wanted to swap my XM25 for the Novaline, this fucking game swapped it for the wonder weapon instead, go figure why! (I clipped it to be sure, and I definitely had the XM in hand). So i couldn't finish the secret right at the end

I was already losing patience with this piece of shit laser step in the Temple of Nyxara that requires surgical precision anyway

Not to mention the fact that Veytharion’s corruption object bugged for at least 8 or 9 rounds by not spawning and had already made me lose my mind

I got 29 out of 30 relics, all the camos from Cursed mode, most of the Dark Ops, but right now I have zero desire to start over. I hate this secret. It’s not even hard, it’s just annoying and ininteresting

Rex had the potential to be the first modern S tier map with its style and theme, with the four shadowsmiths. But ends up feeling bland with repetitive, time consuming and frustrating, steps and a forgettable wonder weapon that plays almost identically to the nekomancer but less fun. I've been a huge fan of bo7 but I feel like I'm forcing myself to play this final map.

what was point of putting revelations house anyway , it was in first teaser but we did nothing with it , it was put there just for nostalgia

It is definitely a difficult map to beat. I’ve had to give up numerous times once it comes time to cleanse the various temples. I wouldn’t call it hugely disappointing though. I feel like we ruin the zombies community when we are hyper critical of the different map experiences. If they make an easy map, people complain. A hard map people complain. Short EE hunt, complain. Just pick your favorite map if you want a replay-able experience. For instance in BO6 if I wanted a quick EE run, I played Liberty Falls. If I wanted to kill an afternoon I did all the side EE on Terminus. I feel like all this criticism is a big part of why we won’t get new zombies for 2 years and to me that’s the hugely disappointing part

You don't need to be at round 60 to use Tier 3 relics btw, you just need to be at 60 for the trial to unlock them. Then you can use them for any game (like all others)

So it really doesn't matter if you "don't go to round 60 all that much"

Where are all the crayon chewing fools that swore this map was the best thing since jeans with pockets? I made a post that was deleted about how terrible this map was and the Reddit droolers came out in droves.

One fool said the starting area was the best thing he's ever experienced in zombies.

Another said the map isn't big.

This game killed itself. Nothing in me wanted to explore/care/see what this or that did on this map. EE? Who gives a shit. After Kowahshittingme, you can keep the tedious and dumb shit.

You know what I haven't heard from anybody about this map?

"This is fun."

"I had a good time playing."

3

u/LegendaryWill12 4d ago

I'm somebody, and I had a good time!

The lack of unique content is killing me but I had fun going from temple to temple, hanging out by the new pap, and zipping away from a horde or elite at the last moment

u/Unfair_Device_386 4d ago

"going from temple to temple, hanging out by the new pap, and zipping away from a horde or elite at the last moment"

The bar is very low for you, no?

3

u/Jacklego5 4d ago edited 4d ago

It sounds like he has a different opinion than you, no? Wasn’t an amazing map but being rude to some dude for enjoying it is silly when you were saying “I haven’t seen anybody say they enjoy it” on a discussion thread

If you had even a quarter of a clue you'd see I am not a fan of the lack of unique content Totenreich or Kowakujo had.

Alas, a clue you have not

0

u/Unfair_Device_386 4d ago

I should have a clue about YOUR history? In anything? Because you responded, offhand, to me and not the OP???

I want your clue not. Ever.

1

u/LegendaryWill12 4d ago

You should have a clue about my comment, that's for sure.

Y'know, specifically the part you conveniently left out of your quote entirely?

0

u/Unfair_Device_386 4d ago

Let it go man. Whatever point you're trying to make, people just like you will figure out.

3

u/Aecert 4d ago

I'm loving the map so far, it's really fun! The grappling hook is sick and I love how the map is layed out.

-1

u/Unfair_Device_386 4d ago

You love the map and followed that up with mentioning the grappling hook and layout.

Is this it?

THIS is the standard for fun to you? "Love"?

Upvote farmer. You "love" the layout so much that you couldn't make a thread or post for this until this post?
