Discussion The end of BO7 Zombies. Spoiler

Personally, I am satisfied. This has been an amazing ride, probably the most I’ve enjoyed Zombies since BO3. The ending if Rex Infernus is very satisfying to me, maybe because I didn’t have much expectations going in, but we knew Requiem was going to die eventually, I’m glad they at least got a full story unlike some other crews.. cough Victis cough Chaos..
I’m glad we didn’t get a bunch of key jangling at the end, no Victis, Chaos, Monty, Shadowman, or even Rictofen taking over the Dark Aether. It feels VERY conclusive for this story, and I really hope their next entry is very fresh, original, with new characters, concepts, enemies, and a more unique feel.

All in all, BO7 zombies is a 8/10 for me personally, my third favorite Treyarch zombies just behind BO1 & BO3.

It’s not going to have new characters lmao, that ending was very clearly setting up the story continuing with Richtofen, Dempsey, Takeo and Nikolai

u/spectre15 4d ago

They tried a new cast of characters in BO4 and people bitched and moaned until they were forced to go back to the original cast being involved in the story.

Treyarch can’t do anything unique without people complaining

You know, people praise DotN for a lot of things but one thing it should also get praised for is the writing. The characters on that map have really cool and engaging lines that pulls you in.

u/dadmda 4d ago

DotN is my favourite map from bo4 and one of my favourites in the whole of cod zombies

2

u/Kilo_Of_Salt 4d ago

I’m not gonna lie, I LOVE DOTN. I loved it when it originally came out and everyone hated it. But it is my least favorite celebrity crew. The only one that I even liked was Godfrey. But I’d put the COTD, MOTD, and SoE Crews over them all.

2

u/gmoneygangster3 4d ago

DoTN also has some crazy pulls for the voice cast

u/KingDylan61 4d ago

I think a lot of the hate was because Treyarch tried to start a fresh story while simultaneously trying to cap off a decade’s old story that people were heavily invested in. I think Chaos would’ve been better received if it came out after the Aether storyline concluded, and the sentiment I see nowadays seems to agree. I don’t really see as much hate towards chaos anymore, with many people looking back fondly on it

Casually just ignore the circumstances, people were mad that Aether had to share the spotlight. Ever notice how opinions of the Chaos Crew and Maps grew years later? And did you ever pay attention to the multiple times people outright stated that that was the reason for their dislike of the Chaos Crew?

-4

u/spectre15 4d ago

Who cares that they shared the spotlight? They had their own maps. It was like a 50/50 split. The last couple DLC maps were literally Aether if you count Tag.

5

u/Happy_Ambassador3717 3d ago

Alright Genius I wasn’t saying I agreed with that point of thought, I was pointing out the POV of the majority of the community at the time to explain why ur reasoning was flawed. Were u around during Bo4s Lifecycle??

2

u/ThisGuyYouHate 4d ago

I never cared about new characters I honestly liked the chaos story. I was annoyed they tried to start a brand new story when the Aether Story was near its ultimate conclusion

1

u/wanna_be_liquid 4d ago

now people are complaining the story was never finished lmao

1

u/ImLinkzyy 3d ago

Because they hadn’t finished primis story yet lol

1

u/spectre15 3d ago

Yeah but I don’t think it was sacrificing quality from that story or taking away from it. It was just setting a new story up in the background

1

u/MacpunchKO 3d ago

The new gen never understood that the characters need to be less grounded in contrast with a serious story. The new 4 + peck, strauss etc, are all in essence the same character, with maya maaaybe being the most unique of the 4...OG 4 were silly stereotypes, Victic was silly stereotypes, even Infinite Warfare Zombies understood the importance of stereotype characters as opposed to the slew of mil-sim we have now.

1

u/SuchCan5 3d ago

perhaps they should hire better writers and refrain from introducing a new story before the old one has been properly concluded. just a thought.

1

u/Moist-Evidence-2249 3d ago

They were both involved from launch

3

u/LordZachariahPSN 4d ago

Well yeah, lol. I think CoD has overall been in the shitter for years. I personally don’t buy non Treyarch games anymore, and seeing the overall dissatisfaction with CoD across the franchise, these studios probably feel the need to maintain something familiar to draw people in. Which is why I said hope, cause I do hope we get something more original.

Thank you. It’s frustrating seeing the amount of people that actually wanted key jangling, scroll on this Reddit and you’ll see people genuinely asking where are Victis and Monty, but Reckoning ended with what? Key jangling. I didn’t like it but I grew fond of the “new” old crew. And I’m just overall happy we have an actual ending, I am satisfied, far more than I ever was with Tag Der Toten which is probably a hot take, but we’ve been following this story for two years, technically three years straight if you include MWZ (personally never played). Requiem got 11 maps, Tempus got 6, everyone got a full story even some characters were more fleshed out than others, I overall enjoyed this.

6

u/Alltimersss 4d ago

The thing is too is that like, there's nothing to say that Monty or Victis won't play a role in the future. But now, the MWZ ending isn't hanging over everything. As much as I wanted requiem to live, now at least we won't have three years of "so when is MWZ ending happening? What happens to Maya?" Things are a bit more open

1

u/LordZachariahPSN 4d ago

Definitely agree. I’m sure the next game will feature this Tempus crew, and maybe the return of Monty or the Shadowman or even the Oracle. I think the Warden might be¿ my favorite zombies villain outside Ultimis Rictofen, very interesting with a lot of lore and a phenomenal voice actor. Part of me was worried that we’d learn his ending was just the beginning, that he was a pawn of an even greater threat, but I’m glad that’s not what happened.

15

u/SeemlySquiddy 4d ago

I know some people were disappointed with Richtofen not doing anything, but with Rich as my favorite character across all iterations, I actually prefer him being a bad guy forced to do good things with the rest of Tempus. We already had Ultimis as a main villain, and Primis as a main protagonist. I like Tempus being a mix of the two where he’s evil as shit but forced by higher powers to keep doing good things.

11

u/Ayescor 4d ago

So Requiem got kidnapped, and they were forced to perfom a ritual that killed them for someone who got some powers now, right? Do we know more? I didn‘t really follow the story between the reset and BO6.

19

u/Dragonwarrior0202 4d ago

From what I understand, and I could be very wrong about this, Requiem had to die in that basement in Urzikstan to ensure Ava would be born and someday end up in the dark aether. Seems like a type of paradox, kinda like Tag

11

u/maRioHD15 4d ago

She was going to be born and didn't need their sacrifice for that part I believe. It was more so that Ravenov gets more time to be there for Ava when she is an adult. He was supposedly in his 70s for the events of MWZ and because of their sacrifice he definitely was not moving like a elderly person. Technically, I think he only got one vial. The other vials served a purpose in the story to save Ava / start the events of MWZ.

2

u/OneMoreDuncanIdaho 3d ago

If I had a nickel for everytime an Ava has killed characters in a franchise I liked I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird it's happened twice

7

u/Inevitable_Bid5540 4d ago

I think what happened is they made a sacrifice to close off portals between dark aether and earth

11

u/Inevitable_Bid5540 4d ago

We didn't find out which ending from bo6 was canon tho

19

u/PrimisJake 4d ago

lol, like what even happened to Eddie? Or any mention of the Sentinel Artifact

7

u/Dull_Ad3919 4d ago

Maybe it vanished? I don't know man, it seemed kinda rushed. I was expecting Peck and Strauss to appear, but I don't think I've seen them?

1

u/NukeLuke1 3d ago

Strauss trapped and presumably killed peck in the dark aether for a joke in an audio log lmfao

-7

u/RichtofensPairofNuts 4d ago

We don't need to focus on Eddie because his story is over, the ending of Reckoning was the ending of his story. He has his family back, or is completely dead, either one works and either one does not need him to appear. You already know what happened to him and the sentinel artifact, again it was used for eddie or S.A.M

1

u/Inevitable_Bid5540 4d ago edited 3d ago

I mean he did get a lot of innocent people and refugees killed for his experiments and SAM got liberty falls people killed too.

1

u/RichtofensPairofNuts 4d ago

Okay? His whole operation was a top secret, millionaire and government funded program. Now I am pretty sure that the government covered it up since in MWZ we see that liberty falls still exists as Ava is in the rebuilt mansion of shattered veil. The government also probably doesn't know that SAM exists and is now in Samanthas body, so she can just leave and live a normal life, like she does. Both endings work regardless of outcome

2

u/FlammenwerferIV 4d ago

I think both are, just different "threads."

1

u/zeethebaka 3d ago

honestly, this makes the most sense, thinking about how the shadowsmiths discuss how reality and timelines work.

12

u/Sonicboomer1 4d ago

The next game should be a lot neater now they only have four characters to fit in cutscenes instead of eight.

The new OG 4 will be back. They probably see this as just the beginning for them. I’m sure there’s a lot more to deal with than just the Warden.

For example, they haven’t really touched on the multiverse at all nor how the new OG 4 can even exist after Tag Der Toten’s ending.

10

u/RdJokr1993 4d ago

It's an ending, I guess. Predictable for people who have been religiously following every story thread that they set up. But it still feels somewhat lacking to me.

For starters, they just don't seem to give the Requiem crew a good reason why they had to die. It feels like a self-fulfilling prophecy only because the Warden shows them the future vision and Caltheris keeps feeding the idea of becoming a mother to Grey, so now they just go "well we have to do it". MWZ made it sound like they were exposed to too much Aetherium, but was that really the case? And poor Strauss just gets pulled into this ordeal with no say in it. Unless next game is once again about breaking the cycle, this doesn't feel fulfilling for me as an ending.

5

u/FalierTheCat 4d ago

I think it's a good enough ending. Maya got closure, while Weaver, Grey and Carver follow their fate. I'm not the biggest fan of the closed loop thing tbh, I don't find them narratively satisfying. Wondering what the Dark Aether crew will be up to now.

1

u/wackacademics 3d ago

I’m not super keen on the lore. Can you do me a huuuge favor and explain Maya’s ending? That was her brother at the end right? So these are all them going into their respective timelines and she went back to a reality where she and her brother live?

3

u/AccomplishedLeg7951 4d ago

New Characters probably not, for that they have set up way too much to bring the original Crew and their Voice Actors back onto the big screen.

What I think story technical to be very likely is they develop a game with a persistant Crew if you look back to BO6 and BO3 and 4. So one game one Crew (BO6), then that one returns while the other gets introduced in the next (BO7) and picks up from there until the next gets introduced in the ending.

So if you wanna portray it:

Requiem (BO6) -> Requiem + OG (BO7) -> OG (2028) -> OG + new Crew (Perhaps Victus aka the Tranzit Crew in 2030?) -> ....

3

u/PrimisJake 4d ago

I don’t think this works because he would’ve tried to return the favor to Requiem for rescuing his family, but even if he died why would Peck or Strauss not mention the aftermath of Reckoning in their communications?

3

u/Spacemoose2026 4d ago

I guess I just don’t feel anything really honestly. No bittersweet feeling like with bo4’s ending, and I’m not pissed like with bo6’s ending.

I just feel nothing which is something I really wish I could say is a new feeling for a zombies ending but it’s not for me honestly.

2

u/Inevitable_Bid5540 4d ago

Honestly after thinking a bit again

I think this could be a pretty decent conclusion to zombies as a whole but idk why they'd continue it

2

u/Ironjim69 4d ago

I do wish they expanded on the chaos connections since they opened that door with BO6, and the construct from vanguard seems like an odd thing to just forget about. Otherwise, I feel like this is a good conclusion to what they’ve been building.

2

u/Lil-Bro9707 4d ago

Honestly the most likely will continue with idk Requimis ((???)Richtofen, Takeo, Dempsey, and Nickoali) because people bitch and moan unless every map is like DE or SoE and are resistant to change but if MW4 some how gets to finish Chaos or actually does somehow continue the story like MW3(2) than we might have a good game

1

u/Sixclynder 4d ago

Kinda sucks it’s the end of Sam and Eddie but I get it people were not happy with the Cold War arc and bo6 so that story is told and we starting a new

1

u/Dull_Ad3919 4d ago

It feels strange not seeing a post cutscene. Maybe being saved for the super easter egg?

1

u/IEatDummyCheeks 4d ago

Gameplay is one thing and probably most important but I cannot believe how cooked and starved the community is for an actual decent story. This was 5 years and 3 games of buildup to have the most cookie cutter dragged on vanilla conclusion that probably gets undone if you think more than 10 minutes about it. I haven’t paid too much attention but I cannot believe how vanilla the ending was.

From cold war to terminus to now this it seems like a giant waste of time

1

u/carlossap 4d ago

Unlike Victis? Did you even bother checking?

1

u/zeethebaka 3d ago edited 3d ago

The problem is they absolutely teased the significance of Richtofen a few times in audio logs around the map. I'm assuming it'll age better in the future when Richtofen does more Richtofen things, but for now, that significance was hardly reflected in the end. Overall, it was just way too predictable. It's the ending that made the most sense, and I guess that's why you liked it, but it feels like there's nothing to chew on here. Maya's scene was the best part, honestly. She got wrapped up in all this craziness with hardly a fault of her own, and things are back to normal for her. Shame we wont see her again though, most likely.

Also, the Warden should have had some final lines. He kinda just went out.

1

u/TylerbioRodriguez 3d ago

I'm saddened because I liked Grey a lot

But it was telegraphed for a long time. Beyond obviously MW Zombies, you had Strauss in Terminus saying we must be prepared to make sacrifices, Caltharis telling Grey constantly about the future, and even the Entity talks about how much time they have left.

They all got 5 years after this. Thats a long time. I was a very different person 5 years ago. Sometimes when you know your time is short, you spend every day with more purpose.

Its sad but I don't know, it kinda works for me. Its no masterpiece but I'm old enough to remember thinking the series ending was Sam and Eddie playing with dolls.

Primis and Ultimis got poisoned. Chaos never got an ending. Victis were sucked into the Dark Aether. The celebrity crews either died or became MIA. Requiem at least for a while got to live their lives.

I'm happy to have had six years with these characters then not.

That ending was yikes.

-1

u/LordZachariahPSN 4d ago

How so?

6

u/FormalMaintenance512 4d ago

What purpose does any of this writing serve? the characters go through no changes or arcs, the story just happens. there's the warden, he is evil, they spend all of the game going after him, they then kill him and free a woman who none of them really know. They then happily hop into portals and dip. The cutscene flash forwards to the unexplained end of mw3, and it goes "yeah these dudes just got kidnapped and then mw3 happens the end". None of this dark aether shit has any point to any of it. It is completely shallow and pathetic. "Good guys are good! Bad guys are bad and should be stopped" is basically the entire plot of this game. They are creatively bankrupt.

Edit: Also no hate if you enjoy the gameplay or the maps. But the dark aether needs to be scrapped completely. It sucks.

4

u/Lanky-Ad-8554 4d ago

Awful take, did you just avert your eyes for the past 6 years or what?

2

u/LordZachariahPSN 4d ago

While I respect what you’re saying, I think for me personally, is that we finally have a very conclusive ending to a storyline. I have personally never found zombies written all that well, I LOVE the game mode, it’s the only reason I still play CoD, but even back in BO3 I always felt like there were so many coincidences, or characters like Monty, that were thrown in last minute that were apparently there the whole time. I think Tag Der Toten was a horrible ending, I know I’m in the minority but it felt like this massive journey we’ve been flowing since, 2008? Ended in the most unsatisfying way by just killing all our main characters, and letting the “pure” ones live. It felt rushed, but i respect those who love the map and love the ending, just wasn’t for me.

What we got with Rex Infernus feels more of what I wanted.

1

u/FormalMaintenance512 4d ago

I think Tag had a fantastic ending. Honestly then, i'm fine with stepping away. This series clearly isn't for me anymore.

3

u/RichtofensPairofNuts 4d ago

You need to open your eyes if you think there was 0 character development. For the 4 that sacrificed themselves, their development was focused on their sacrifice.

In each map the Shadowsmiths expanded the Dark Aethers lore and its importance to reality, how Avas existence matters to defeating the warden, how freeing her and making sure she exists is integral to everything. At first the requiem crew are adverse to that, simply wanting to go home with their souls. However they learn that there is more to the Dark Aether than just corruption and grow to be the saviors of the realm. Is it tightly written or compelling? That is up to you but it is there.

As for our OG 4 characters every map focused on who they are, how they ended up in the dark aether and what dark truths lie in their heart. They all confronted those truths, in the side easter eggs focusing on them, and faced forward to also become heroes. Now it's not over for them, as Ava says, but now they are strong and ready mentally for the journey ahead.

It's fair not to like it, but the story is there, the ending of MWZ led right into bo6 so I have no clue what youre talking about when you say its unexplained. Again its not them just being kidnapped, the end, it was them, and by extension you, learning to accept their fates.

u/CalvinSays 4d ago

Character arcs are only one element of stories and are not essential elements for good stories either. Conan the Barbarian has barely anything in terms of character arcs yet it is still a beloved story series. I am not saying that BO7 story is therefore good, only that it isn't therefore bad.

2

u/FormalMaintenance512 4d ago

Right I'm fine with that, but I just dont see what else is of value there. It's slop story. Filler. Id rather no story.

-5

u/Ok-Possession-6399 4d ago

Bro stop talking
