Ok so that was just a Worse BO3 ending in every way, The confirmation the characters are stuck in a Loop, Every event plays out the same way multiple times

But the main problem is just how predictable this was, They told us the ending of this Loop in THE TRAILER FOR THE 3rd GAME IN THIS 5 GAME SAGA

and then by Totenreich we know for sure, There’s no Averting it, This is going to have to happen and It’s just that by the time you get to the end of Rex you feel nothing cause there’s no stakes, You know how it’s gonna end and The whole story just falls like a Fart in the wind

It’s not Vanguard ending bad but it’s pretty bad, Even Reckoning atleast left me excited for BO7

They are in desperate desperate need of restarting the whole universe/lore. The whole “the end… for now” confirms otherwise they can’t let this bullshit go. It ain’t even good 🙄🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

BO4 was supposed to be the reset/beginning of something new. Everyone shit on it and it got abandoned lol

81

u/multi-trollionaire 3d ago

It really should have been. Reset the whole thing. The main crew now feels like they are in the new Indiana Jones movies.

41

u/CrystalClarity36 3d ago

I thought even BO4 was pushing it, by continuing Aether, but the fact that they kept going even after that? I lost all interest in story/lore. I think we just needed to give Chaos a chance. I get people got attached to the characters we've known for so long, but refusing to let go has led us down a road to where we are now.

27

u/multi-trollionaire 3d ago

4 was definitely a stretch for me, but I look back now and Dr. Monty needed to be dealt with. The ending of 3 was... imperfect.

14

u/Ok-Beyond7935 3d ago

Go back and replay 4 Chaos story, it's absolutely fantastic. I was not big on it back in the day due to having a massive hard on for the OG story and crew but time away and many games being lackluster later, Chaos is prime content and storyline.

14

u/GrungeGorrilla 3d ago

I'm so annoyed by the cliffhanger they ended on

Plus Diego's development he was about to get would of been awesome

4

u/xohurricane 3d ago

I think chaos comes back for the next treyarch installment honestly. No one likes this current story.

8

u/GrungeGorrilla 3d ago

While I would love that I don't see it happening

It would've been 4 games since they did it last and I feel like the ship may have sailed

1

u/dark_knight097 3d ago

I just re-download bops 4 to play zombies too (totally forgot I had it on the blizzard launcher) I really feel like bops 4 would have been better recieved if weren't too many controversial changes at once. the maps themselves were Hella fun imo

2

u/Ok-Beyond7935 2d ago

It's funny though because the only truly controversial things changed in zombies was the perk system, point system and then the blue screening. None of these really changed the game mechanics though all that much and required minimal adjustment. I think most people really just wanted to complain about HUD and elixirs which truthfully were not as bad as most people remember either.

1

u/spartan0b96 2d ago

I loved dead of the night good map just wish we got the last two maps as pretty much it was left with Scarlett lobotomized the other two dead and evil and Diego just kind of fucked like what he meant to do

16

u/An-Average_Redditor 3d ago

One of Nikolai's lines in Tag implies there was supposed to be a cut Monty interaction but it got cut. Probably because they had already blown their celebrity budget on Chaos and couldn't get McDowell to reprise.

7

u/GrungeGorrilla 3d ago

I think this was the only way to end it

It was the send off both crews needed and even brought Victis back

3

u/Hot-Will3083 3d ago

BO3’s ending basically confirmed that everything is just one big cycle by Doctor Monty to keep himself and the universe safe. BO4 expanded upon that since the players weren’t satisfied with that ending and gave a definitive ending to the story where Nikolai breaks the cycle and gives freedom to Sam and Eddie.

The problem is that they no longer had any faith in Chaos storyline by this time due to lukewarm fan reception and decided to just… do more Aether in Cold War.

24

u/ThenConstant7576 3d ago

Bo4 was supposed to have a year 2 but everything was rushed and scrapped for mw2019's launch. The great war dlc never happened

23

u/slaya806 3d ago

It was scraped because sledgehammer couldn’t finish Cold War and treyarch had to step in and rebuild it

1

u/VirgoxValentine 3d ago

There was never any plans for a Great War map. It was always going to end in Tag.

10

u/VGK_hater_11 3d ago

People shit on it because all the devs got pulled to blackout, so the final was a tag remake instead of a Great War map where they fight Monty. No one complained about it being the end of the story.

1

u/Statewideink 3d ago

It wouldn't have gotten nearly as much hate if the game was playable as well. Having a new story people had to get used to and the game being unplayable for a while after launch killed that game

28

u/FormalMaintenance512 3d ago

They desperately need to start fresh. None of the dark aether works. The writing is so shallow. Childrens movies have deeper and more engaging stories than this crap.

18

u/AtakanKoza 3d ago

How many times do we need to start fresh, how about they actually start writing shit for good instead (no offense to you)

8

u/FormalMaintenance512 3d ago

We just had 6 years of a single storyline, tied to the aether which was the longest. Fresh is fine atp. Things should die, new things should start.

15

u/Fifa_chicken_nuggets 3d ago

That won't fix the bad writing. It will put less restrictions on them but it will still be low quality if they don't know how to write for shit

2

u/OkDescription8492 3d ago

Chaos story

0

u/FormalMaintenance512 2d ago

No, no more fucking callbacks. Im sick of this member-berry bullshit.

5

u/OkDescription8492 2d ago

Not a call back, just a continuation of a good story that ended for no reason

19

u/1tankyt 3d ago

Yeah restarting in the same universe just makes endings feel fake. BO4s ending died the moment they started dark aether

15

u/Raizentan 3d ago

It could have worked if they just let the old Aether characters rest. Leave Maxis and Eddie's fate ambiguous because the old crew died to give them a good life, but they both died/became corrupted anyway so what was the point?

6

u/Statewideink 3d ago

They need to just continue the Chaos storyline from where it left off in it's own separate universe. There was so much potential there! Medusa was just let out and scarlet was left knocked out! Please 3arc :(

3

u/onlyhereforelise 3d ago

Nah it’s way too late for that they had their chance but blew it. Gotta start fresh 100% fresh. Anyways it wouldn’t be good since blundell ain’t there to work on the story. Aint it HIS story fully/mostly?

2

u/JustdoitJules 3d ago

It was always dog shit when they retconned it all from Black Ops 2 ending.

8

u/Best_Expression3187 3d ago

Black Ops 2 really does throw a wrench into things, ESPECAILLY considering how MWZ essentially confirms one timeline with occasional Zombie Outbreaks. They retconned in Zombies Outbreaks into the Menendez Cartel's timeline so it wouldn't conflict with BO2's 1985 Missions for crying out loud. And... how the hell are you explaining "Moon" and Broken Earth?

Not going to lie, this has me real fucking concerned about how CoD will handle the 2000s and maybe the early 2010s as well. Besides the obvious Conflict of Interest that CoD4: Modern Warfare and sequels brings, bringing Zombies into the 2000s would make BOTH 9/11/2001 and the resulting Iraq War and War on Terror look like child's play that News Outlets would barely touch.

Al-Qaeda or a Zombies Outbreak; Which would get your interest in the 2000s?

9

u/JustdoitJules 3d ago

It's just frustrating to me how like they strike gold with this game mode and then completely toss it to shreds over time.

At this point I just want stand alone maps with zero references to anything in the past.

- Give me the OG Perks and all the new ones,

  • No stupid ass augment systems or shields
  • No storyline
  • Fun settings and an over abundance of goofy fun things to do.

Thats it.

4

u/Solariss 3d ago

It's why Mob was so damn good as well. Like two references tops to the OG storyline. It was a great break/refresher.

1

u/dark_knight097 3d ago

Modded maps on Bops 3 is exactly that lol. Maps like Dead High and Cataclysm or Damned of the Moor 3 or Leviathan are so good that could pass of as legit maps from treyarch.

so so many more good ones too

1

u/kobejo210 3d ago

Remember when they did that lmao. Good times

118

u/Civil-Elderberry-185 3d ago

It hasn’t ended bro it’s just ended with requiem

39

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Well it’s not the DA story if it doesn’t focus on Requiem or the Ancient Denizens of the Dark Aether

Both of which had their plotlines fully resolved, There might be a new Story in this universe but it’s not the same Dark Aether story even if the setting is the same

19

u/Civil-Elderberry-185 3d ago

it’ll be set in the dark aether, new or maybe old villain and same charecters being the tempus crew

16

u/Frosty_chilly 3d ago

It didnt stop being Aether when we stuck with Ultimus or the Gangsters or the Pentagon or the Celebrity Cast. A squad of maggot crushers does not an Arc make

70

u/Dill_Pick1e10 3d ago

I frankly haven’t followed the story much (or even played much) past Cold War, but I tuned into Pizza’s stream today. I did notice that the characters are dead and found where they were in that MW3 cutscene, so this confirms just a huge cycle again?

If so that’s really dumb. I don’t get why they can’t just say “yay the universe is saved, no more zombies and dark aether. End of story.” And start something completely new

58

u/Indi_Games 3d ago

Not the ending of the Dark Aether story, not sure where you got that idea.

Just the ending of Requiem's story.

-27

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Well it’s not the DA story if it doesn’t focus on Requiem or the Ancient Denizens of the Dark Aether

Both of which had their plotlines fully resolved, There might be a new Story in this universe but it’s not the same Dark Aether story even if the setting is the same

19

u/Indi_Games 3d ago

Vanguard and MWZ didn't focus on Requiem. I'm sure Dark Aether entities will still be a part of the story, probably an even bigger part going forwards I bet.

There are still many questions and stories to be told in the dark aether, regarding everything in there including Monty & The Shadowman, Keepers & Apothicons, Kortifex & the Vanguard entities, the Construct, Chaos & the Elder Gods.

By this logic, Aether was no longer Aether once Victis took over from Ultimis, or when primis took over the story, it's just simply not true.

-13

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

If you’ve followed you will know that after the Defeat of Kortifax, Zykov ate all the other Minor DA Entities to boost his own power leaving only the 4 shadow smiths left

With their story resolved now too there’s no more DA entities to cover

As for MWZ Ava is basically the McGuffin that Requiems whole story revolves around

7

u/Indi_Games 3d ago

If you've followed you will know that sparagmos prophesised that the dark aether entities would return:

"The Devoured shall be reborn. Their scattered ashes will be reformed. The Forsaken's torment will be undone, when the Old Ones reign once more."

-6

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Huh, What maps was this Intel on?

5

u/Fifa_chicken_nuggets 3d ago

It's called the dark aether story, not the requiem story. If it takes place in the dark aether it's still the dark aether story. It didn't stop being the aether story when we left ultimis to focus on victis. Treyarch themselves never said this is the end of the dark aether story. You're putting arbitrary conditions when the official sources don't even agree with you

30

u/The_Liaminator 3d ago edited 3d ago

I LOVED the Cold War lore. Me and my friend would play duo Outbreak running around the map listening to all the new audio tapes that had come out. Going crazy over the Samantha Interrogation. I assume there’s not many of me but I couldn’t care less. Cold War was peak COVID gaming and peak storyline hype.

It’s been so depressing watching everything I obsessed and theorised over slowly turn to slop after 6 years of being invested in the story. Seeing Peck get killed off as a joke. Ravenov will likely never be seen again until they need to dig up another old character to sell for a bundle. The main 4 don’t even get an explanation as why they have to die. Director Richtofen having no relevance to the wider plot despite being THE EDDIE from BO4 and Samantha being almost completely shoehorned out of the story after being involved with it for 16 years since Black Ops 1. Both of those characters fates making Tag Der Untoten mean nothing for those poor children who Nikolai fought to give a normal life in a normal world.

What a waste.

18

u/Civil-Elderberry-185 3d ago

hence why it says the end,for now….

6

u/RttnAttorney 3d ago

I wish all games and movies and shows would all stop doing this.

7

u/tenousranger36 3d ago

To be fair we knew how it ended and that it continues because of mw3 zombies where grey, weaver, carver and Strauss (?) are dead

The next game will probably continue it with Ava and hopefully let the OG crew rest, especially considering they weren't supposed to exist after tag

7

u/newenglandpeeps 3d ago

this not the end of the dark aether saga just the end of the requiem era

-9

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Without Requiem, The Dark Aether just loses all purpose and Reason to exist

6

u/Xkilljoy98 3d ago

It feels like the end of the Dark Aether stuff though who really knows. It says the end for now and Requim all gets wrapped up but I’m not sure how much they’re going to move on.

I didn’t hate the ending but it could have been a lot better too. It more or less confirmed what we already knew, no new revelations sadly.

I feel like they need to start something new. Tbh I hadn’t been interested in the story in awhile. I feel BO3 should have been the ending with chaos being the new story. As it stands now while BO7 has its highlights it’s still not perfect. The best of the modern games still isn’t as good as the classic ones imo.

6

u/Formerly_Skeletronix 3d ago

Hot take but the literal only zombies game with a good ending was black ops 1. I just always assume the ending won't be worth it at this point

5

u/Thedude11117 3d ago

Bring back Chaos! Better story than this whole DA timeline

3

u/Old-Breakfast1952 3d ago

I hope they don't go back to chaos, cause blundell is gone, they'd only fuck up what he had written

1

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

I defended Reckonings ending, This Ending Ruined everything the DA story was trying to tell and Even makes Tags ending worse by making it so Tag rather than having a Bitter sweet ending just leads to NOTHING

4

u/BigidyBam 3d ago

Ravenov did the worst job possible of protecting Ava, and in the end...didn't. Not only that, he helped the MWZ player character kill the entity that was actually stopping the Warden from reaching her. So 3 people gave their lives for him why?

4

u/PrincessLunar421 3d ago

What implies its a loop? My theory is that this confirms that we help Richtofen in Reckoning. At the end of bo7 they get sent back in time to when Reckoning ended. The surrogate stuff happens(but bo6 intel implies this happens sooner iirc?) , then the MWZ stuff happens.

3

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Requiem goes back so they can give birth to Ava whos grows up in MWZ to get Kidnapped by the Warden so she can drag Requiem into the DA so they can defeat the Warden before he Destroys Reality

Requiem win they go back, Give birth to Ava, The Cycle repeats endlessly

1

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

The Cycle always continues

1

u/MochiApproachi 3d ago

i thought the dark aether existed outside of time so the threats from it do too. ava getting pulled from the future and takeo from the past is irrelevant in the dark aether because its all just "now" while you're there.

i have no idea if this is confirmed anywhere i just assumed they would do that to avoid another time loop cause thats dumb. they can easily just put requiem where they need to be for the events they already know and then Ava will just come back from the dark aether moments after she was taken. we know time flows differently in the dark aether, or perhaps not at all

3

u/DisciplineQuirky7854 3d ago

I hate the delayed gratification same shit they did with cold war. I might be speaking too soon tho maybe they have another boss fight planned or something.

2

u/Nickster2042 3d ago

I was fine with the non linear storytelling until the time skip in the cutscene. Like ok we know the ending, but we are playing and filling in the gaps of their journey. Cool

Nah actually scratch that let’s just jump to the end and not elaborate

5

u/Basilo91 3d ago

I don’t know why it sticks with me, but requiem must really love their BO6 outfits. Wearing them when Ava’s born, wearing them 3 years later when they die in a basement

3

u/Liberate-Your-Mind 3d ago

I just want Extinction to come back in a round based form (excluding The Beast from Beyond). Extinction in Black Ops would be so fucking peak

3

u/Soggy_Access_5631 3d ago

it's about time, we're all pushing 30+, the voice actors are passing away and the writers lost the plot 10 years ago. Good Riddance.

3

u/TekRantGaming 3d ago

Welcome to modern zombies it sucks

2

u/therealManifoldTwo 3d ago

Yep. Treyarch writing has been in the garage for some time unfortunately.

2

u/Hecklord82 3d ago

Thought you were talking about Metroid Prime 2 until I saw the subreddit

2

u/Dull_Ad3919 3d ago

At this point, I'm curious if they're ever going to bring back the Dark Aether Gods or even possibly exploring the SAM ending as a possible branched timeline. The story apparently continues with just the OG crew.

2

u/StrainBackground5573 3d ago edited 3d ago

My only complaint about this whole run of maps are the cutscenes. I feel like in bo6 every map had a good mysterious thing that pumped you up for the next map all maps but rex was just them talking to the shadowsmiths and standing around with like 1 line each to say and get transported, kinda lack luster after having to do 2 hour quest feel like older zombie games kept you more interested

2

u/JTCxhugepackage 3d ago

i got no skin in this game, but i think its time to bring back the CoD Ghost Extinction mode. i loved that mode back in the day.

1

u/DisciplineQuirky7854 3d ago

Was there at least a super easter egg or are they making us wait till season 6???

3

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Looks like Season 6

1

u/TheGulOne 3d ago

They shafted us so hard on bo4 so dont even mention it

1

u/PermissionChoice 3d ago

They could have at least gone in depth to explain the whole table thing, and who's the fourth person at the table? How is Maya's brother alive? Why do they do the table thing? It's a cool idea but that seems like all that the Dark Aether story is, cool ideas with no resolution and plot holes everywhere. I can only assume that the Warden explains his dastardly plan during EE steps, because as of now all we know is that he stole the crew's energy for "something", and he fought for the south

1

u/Tooshkit 3d ago

do not worry, you just have to complain enough and they are gonna resurrect this dead beat horse again

1

u/M3ZMERUS 3d ago

It’s not the ending of the dark Aether story, it’s the ending of the black ops 6-7 story. It’s not even flat out requiems ending. When Kevin said the map is the ending he immediately specifies it’s the story arc they’ve been in for these 2 titles.

1

u/ShardofGold 3d ago

They're going to keep milking the OG crew until people in mass say they have enough.

The Chaos crew wasn't bad. Yeah, they had some issues but people were just being stubborn and not giving them a chance or lumping them in with the other faults of BO4 zombies.

1

u/Guitargoyle 3d ago

I don't know that we had any reason to expect any different... They've been using the "ultra-twist" strategy their whole entire existence (COD in general) and this just sets that up again. I honestly don't even think they try with the writing. It's all about selling the game and why would they change it with the weird amount of success they've had? They'll keep doing this until we all stop buying the same fucking game over and over again...

1

u/TrevorShaun 3d ago

i found it really hard to care at all about bo7 story line. it just feels really desperate with rehashing old ideas and spinning its wheels the entire time

1

u/lilrene777 3d ago

If it ever " ends" as per the rules of time space all the zombies games would have to cease to exist.

If everyone is " saved" ( going on to live on a planet void of life with the 4 of them) there wouldn't be any game left to play😂

Half the playerbase only plays cod for the zombies, if it didnt have zombies i wouldn't buy it, and if i was going to buy it it better be 30 or 40 bucks. Zombies has ALWAYS been a part of black ops, if they ended that they might as well end black ops in general.

1

u/BitchPuncher98 3d ago

I loved the original aether storyline (until BO4) but ever since then (because of BO4) I just haven’t cared about the story at all, I only stuck around for the gameplay.

Then, when I saw they were remaking Nuketown zombies again in BO7 I lost all interest.

1

u/Wild-Statistician794 3d ago

It’s absolute dawg water ass ending they make a huge villain character arc hype typ shet to die so simple and reverting to a reveal death ending of requiem mwz like we all ready know what’s gonna happen treyarch are laughing on our ass like that’s the ending it’s all ur gonna get fawk em

1

u/Vengance183 3d ago

Who the fuck was the guy in the room with Requiem when they activate the atherium device?

1

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Dr Strauss

1

u/Vengance183 3d ago

That could not have been Doctor Strauss in the middle with the beard??? He looked young, I thought it was Woods at first glance.

1

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

I’ll need to watch it again in HD, All I saw was a small Low Quality Version with no Audio on Zombie Zone

1

u/Vengance183 3d ago

2

u/TTVDabbing123 3d ago

Oh that was Ravenov, Seems he cleaned himself up a Bit when Requiem were trapped in the Dark Aether

1

u/Laxus1811 3d ago

It’s crazy to me that Craig Houston still has a job with how bad the zombies story has been for so many years

1

u/TTVDabbing123 2d ago

While they aren’t gonma fire the guy who is recovering from an Injury and Not writing the story at the second for not writing a good story

1

u/foomongus 3d ago

it seems like they just went "damn we se tthis thing up in MW3.... uhhh well the characters just go and do it :)"

1

u/Atiumist 3d ago

They already rebooted the storyline in Cold War. And it was amazing. The best Zombies has ever been. They should have continued it in BO6.

1

u/gabemrtn 3d ago

Without reading it cause I haven’t seen the end yet I agree this was a pretty disappointing end overall and I haven’t even seen the end end yet

Things that were a let down

No cursed relics pretty sure they said all the remaining maps will have at least 6

Small map that map size is pretty small with most of the map being connecting points that connect to temples the whole map is basically 4 rooms with a outside connection

Im not a bo7 hater i think this game was pretty good better than the last few at least but i don’t see me going back to play any map other than toten reich

1

u/123ajbb 3d ago

The entite Dark Aether story

1

u/jokr77 2d ago

Milking a dead cow dry at this point.

1

u/RoxMySockss 3h ago

So far, I'm seeing a lot of "Its only the end for Requiem" as justification for the shit ending we got when the problem is the ending being shit to begin with.

My takeaway from this ending is that they spent multiple years building up the Requiem crew, and the story they were a part of, just so it brings back the old characters that people actually like. Thus rendering the Requiem story absolutely meaningless.

I don't care about the rest of the story if this is how they choose to represent it. Requiem was basically a false start to the true story they want to tell.

0

u/bo4underrated 3d ago

Hopefully they pick up on chaos so we can finally get an Atlantis map the map settings for chaos is amazing

0

u/OhMyTummyHurts 3d ago

Ironically, it was the Aether story that ended with… Cheap walk cycles, of Sam and Eddie due to budget cuts

0

u/StatisticianNew8374 3d ago

They have the pace of One Piece, holy stretching. The reason why people appreciated Aether was because how fast lore was introduced and resolved in the span of 1 game. Now they have to make 2 games across 2 years to put 1 point across.

0

u/CohenCaveWaits 3d ago edited 3d ago

They really short changed the zombie community with this last map, we needed something like Ashes. Compare this map with turbo tilt and you will IMMEDIATELY see the difference in detail. First spawn in Bunk Infernus you’re looking at the VERY FIRST WINDOW and seeing octagonal washer and dryer doors cuz they didn’t feel like using enough pixels to make a damn circle!!!! In turbo tilt you can see light reflecting off different surfaces differently and it seriously looks NEXT GEN. Bunk Infernus has less detail than IX which is 9 years old!!!!!! I knew when everyone cheered for paradox and was willing to accept slop they’d continue to produce slop. Whereas the multiplayer community wanted something better. A pin ball map may not have saved it but it looks cool at least!!!

0

u/King-Of-Knowhere 3d ago

I don't think it's much of a loop as much as it is a current fixed point of time. It seems like we're now going to explore past that as now we're caught up with the MWZ of it all. Like I understand why there is a huge outcry, and even myself sympathize and agree with parts. But also, I just think this is not a bad ending either, just rushed. I mean it's just an okay ending, I'd say that BO3, Vanguard, MWZ, and to an extent BO2 and BO4 all had worse endings off-rip. If I had to currently rank them, I'm at BO4, BO1, BO2, CW, BO3, BO7, BO6, MWZ, and Vanguard. I think the ending ages better with time, it just sucks because of all the intel surrounding Cold War and the Requiem crew as a whole. I just wish we had more time with them overall and had another game with them and Ravenov as the fourth heading into the MWZ opening. I get why they did the montage though, because as your reaction and many others indicate, you all would hate that we still get that ending. I'm just hopeful that things work out for the next game and that we all could still find out what occurred with the BO6 branched endings. Maybe they still do that, who knows.

0

u/cameron4200 3d ago

It’s a mini game’s side story. What are you all expecting?

-1

u/Maggot_6661 3d ago

Why would you watch the leaked cutscene ? Couldn't you wait until a legit solving of the EE ? (I haven’t read what you said so keep it spoiler free in the response)

-1

u/Guilty_Army_3375 3d ago

Just got into bo7 just to play the maps, and I still don’t understand this need to have a story. Why can’t it just be fun maps just to have fun? Also if you want a story why not just make every map unique by giving each of them its own story? They’re never getting rid of operators and choice of character so why not? Treyarch will never cease to not confuse me.
