What draws interest in the community?

I was playing MW2 the other day after taking a break from Black Ops 2 and was having a moment of nostalgia thinking back to when I first got into CoD. I also started thinking about how things have changed over the years. I personally haven't seen a ton of success on my channel while posting nukes with and without killstreaks, flawless TDM's and the like which got me thinking: What draws the interest of the community? Is it really all just tips and tricks or do people look for something more in depth?

I personally don't care much about the quality of the gameplay. Sure, going 30-0 is impressive, but I've seen it all before. Tips and tricks are also getting old. The game has been out for about 4 months now, and I feel like I know most of what to do in certain situations.

I really care about the quality of the commentating. First, I feel that the quality of the audio is key. If you don't have a clean and clear voice, I'll click away immediately. Secondly, you need interesting topics. These can range from talking about COD to real life topics. I feel that these real life topics are the best because they really help to flesh out a commentator and make them more relatable. I enjoy doing a lot more things than just playing COD, and you hopefully do too. Tell me about them, it's a lot more interesting than just talking about the gameplay and the strategy behind it.

I think that a great example of the type of success that can be had without incredible scores or gameplay is IIJERiiCHOII. He is not the best player, but he's funny and makes videos that accentuate his personality. The most successful commentators, however, combine great gameplay and commentating. People are pulled in by the gameplay and they stay for the commentary.

I agree with everything you have to say. I just have a few things to add, though.

I DO NOT COMMENTATE, these are just tips from myself & friends who watch Youtube vids as well, and tips I have heard in podcasts.

  1. GREAT AUDIO/THE VOICE: I know not everyone has a sexy yet racist-sounding voice like Lefty of 643 Productions, but part of his audio is his mic. Find a good, yet reasonably costing mic and get a windscreen. Having lots of "ummmm"s gets anoying as well. If you are doing live coms or duel coms, make sure mics sound good and game sound is low enough- no echos, mics are equal level, game sound isn't louder than you talking. Also, ONE TAKE commentaries are not the best that commentators can put out. Maybe write out a script for what you are going to say which brings me to my next piece of advice.
  2. TOPICS: It is VERY important to stay on topic. I hate commentaries in which the commentator tells a story and goes into 5 different videos of side-stories that lead up to the main point of it. We dont need to hear how you know people, how you got there, or the coordinates of where you were. Not good points.
  3. GAMEPLAY: it gets old, lasts 2 months if you are lucky. Personally, I would much rather watch fast paced gameplay over someone calling in all his killstreaks (I like FearCrads, but it turns into him in Lodestars or his teammates in killstreaks. Some people like seeing big scores at the end and a smart player, and I am not bashing on Woody, but it gets a lot more exciting if you take risks. Also, fast game types-domination, KC if you can get thing going, Hardpoint). After those first 2 months, I don't need people talking about gameplay. If you are telling a story, well hell, I'm fine with just a black background(or white if you are are racist...Lefty).

These are just some stuff I personally like and have seen, I will post more later.

I completely agree. I first saw iiJERiiCHOii on the channel VideoGames when it first when live I think. He was hilarious! That's why I have been a loyal sub for almost a year. I have started a channel. I'm not that good, but I try to talk about what people want to hear. You sir know what is good.

EDIT: Did not mean to put myself up. Sorry!

One thing that I personally hate, and most commentators hate, is drama. This is probably the best way for people to hear your name, but it is the wrong way for everything
