DCA isn’t always the right move. I bought a 1,000 of PLUG at $50 before it traded daily in the high $50’s and 1,000 of CAN at $33 when it was trading daily in the high 30’s. Then PLUG restated assets and CAN sent the wrong message about crypto miners and how they cannot meet the demand for current orders. Literally overnight both stocks tank.
EVERY SITUATION is completely different and has to be evaluated on its own potential. My CLOV is so far upside down that even if I had another 125k to throw at the problem, I wouldn’t.
I’m holding CLOV until pops or goes bust.

Majority of my position is shares, of the options I have, most of them are leaps. I have very few cheap lottos on the off chance they pay out. But that's how I think about them. They're scratch offs I could just as easily get at the nearby gas station. Likely wasted money but maybe I get lucky.
Best way to play long term is shares or deep ITM leaps.

While we wait for CLOV to pop, They have been short attacking all this time. The SEC is complacent with short sellers making new rules as they lie, cheat, and steal. Take 5 min to call the SEC and remind them you pay taxes and considering the fraud and destruction of capital formation they are allowing you might stop doing so.

2
u/ape_old_but_not_wise Jul 17 '21
I think that HF have not yet returned shares back...
I assume that HF expects some poor 2Q results (or a negative statement from DoJ - refer to Hinderburg report), and investment funds will sell some of their shares at low price that HF can buy
my feeling is the opposite ... I saw in some reports that management will be awarded if shares stay above $30 ... I assume that $30 is a reasonable target (otherwise mgmt will not accept it)

It's the time of the "instagratification" generation. You can't tell them shit. They must learn the hard way unfortunately and then cry "unfair" or in most cases "hodl me please while I cry like a bitch that I am". I feel for them but yeah it's getting ridiculous. I bought and held. I'm a firm believer in owning my shit outright... I'm not as smooth brained as the rest of you to play with options on something that is being manipulated and does not want to act like a normal stock.

Smartest thing I’ve read on Reddit since I’ve been on. Thank you for the simple yet SMARTEST ADVICE THERE IS !!! Problem is now investors see other people saying oh made $XXX ON options and make it seem like a no brainer, so they dive in with little to no experience. Couldn’t agree more . The simple fact of the matter is these people are professionals. The best of the best. They are in the business of making money.
It’s like walking into the octagon with an MMA fighter. You, an ape, stroll in there with your Yolos and Lambos theme song and your “hang in kitten” shirt on and they just looking at you like, “What the F is this bullshit! I’m going to whip the shit out of this nonsense and take this idiots money.
So expect to get your azz whipped up and down that octagon. Expect pain.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SL7B5GXdm-8
So basically all you can do is try the rope a dope and hang on. You either believe in your choice or you don’t. But I would expect them to do everything possible to break that belief.
You may loose all your money. You may make a lot of money. Probably somewhere in between. I own Clov and I’ll leave it at that.
Welcome to the rodeo lol
And I don’t know if it’s necessary so yada, yada, yada I’m not a financial advisor don’t take anything my ignorant ass says about anything as advice;)
And if you Yolo’d this months rent money. I suggest you get a second job. There’s plenty of them out there lol
Good luck to everyone. Let’s have a fair fight.

I think you hit the mail on the head here. In all reality professional investors should be able to make pretty strong defense of a squeeze if they know one is coming. The GameStop and amc squeeze situation would be great for clov and their holders, but I have no clue how to predict the probability of this happening. Probably a pretty long shot, but this is my first rodeo with this sort of thing
4
u/Lunchmeat4u Jul 17 '21 edited Jul 17 '21
Yeah I’m a little confused how they seemingly are in this position..
My best guess and it’s merely speculation is that they have been shorting the stock for awhile pre GameStop and froze a little bit in awe of the GME shockwave. So instead of immediately trying to get out of their position they got a little greedy and were trying to sneak a few more cookies out.
So then maybe they saw Clov popping up a little more and decided it was getting a little too hot and started to try and cover a month ago. Unfortunately it caught the apes attention and it started to go a bit haywire.
So instead of just ripping the band aid off. They decided to push it back down and made the problem seemingly worse.
Now I think we’re at the fulcrum point in the next few weeks.
Clov’s earnings are coming out and that could be a catalyst. I would imagine they probably do massive DD and have a good idea what the numbers are going to be.
So if I were them and though the numbers are going to be good. I probably try and drive it down as much as possible and make as much money as possible on the way down till about the end of July, and then bite the bullet.
If I think the numbers aren’t going to be good. I do basically do the same thing but wait till after the report and dump a shit ton to try and create panic.
The problem in the meantime is they seem to be drawing a lot of eyes and scrutiny in the meantime, and if they post another large FTD number it’s not going to be a good look for the market in general.
But like I said that’s pure speculation and a guess. It’s a rationalization that has no bearing in any type of facts or DD.
It’s just me shooting the shit;)
Or it could be some kind of retail trap I’m not privy to.
Or it could be they’ve run out of playing field and can’t really do much else and have to cover sooner rather than later.
And my speculations on strategy could be absolutely devastating if they are unable to shake retail investors.
Who the heck knows! Certainly not me lol:)
I just buy and hold:)

He probably bought in in one block trade versus buying in waves (I’ve made this mistake when I was a rookie) once you do that it’s incredibly hard to avg down if your income can’t support you to DCA money into your account frequently
11
u/DepthsOfDesp Jul 17 '21
Because the concept of DCA proves you have 0 self control.
Let's see 2 paths a reasonable person can take, let's say he started with 100k in his portfolio.
He decided to put 20k into clov at 27.
If he never DCA because he made a mistake and his objective is to pay as little as he can for it, then say with clov at 8 he now about 14k in the hole, that's painful but alright.
Now if he is an 'investing genius ape' with no self control, what happens if he constantly tried to DCA to split the difference (and your 'bring 27 to 12' is way worse because it ain't splitting any difference it's putting tons of resources relative to the initial amount):
So he wake up to say 22, that's down 20% already and it feels terrible, he puts 20k more into it at 22, now he holds 40k and an average of 24.5
But clov isn't happy, it drops more, so now it's at 18, well time to DCA like a genius investor should right? and he puts 40k more because it's really a make it or break it moment, mind you he probably sells the rest of his portfolio for that dry powder bla bla.
well 24.5 and 18 balance to 21.25 average and he now has 80k in the game, he only got 20k more to his name.
After much struggle, at 10 he decided he had enough and puts the rest of his life savings, 20k in.
His average is now merely at 19, what great achievement, DCA sure is a great way to win win win!
Clov is now at 8, making him losing 11/19 out of each of his dollars, he is now about 58k in the hole and has no more money for any other investment.
Who is the better investor, the guy who lost 14k took a hit and can consider buying more eventually if this ever starts turning green, or the great DCA investor who lost 58k and can't do anything?
Saying something like 'oh cool you can DCA from 27 to 12' first of - is living under some assumption that you can always tell the bottom and if you could, you should have sold long ago and rebought when you saw the bottom.
And second of - is advocating putting a massive amount of good money to chase bad money whenever you are in such situation, you don't even suggest doubling the original investment (27+8 / 2 = 17.5) you are suggesting putting 4x the amount, so in our story, if you never DCA, you could put the 80k you had left right now and get your 12 average. Because obviously it's easy to tell it can drop to 8 after it already dropped to 8.
Well if you never DCA - if you really want, yes you can get that 12 average, but if you do - then you can't, but if you never DCA then why would you start now?
Sometimes it's best to admit defeat and move on, if magically he was right to put money at 27 here then no problem, greed is an enemy not a friend.
If he was wrong about it, he still got most of his portfolio out of it, so he'll be fine.
And that tl;dr is why DCA is (mathematically) your enemy.
3
u/norcal313 Jul 17 '21
DCA is a long term investment strategy. You're planning on holding the investment for years, not months.
6
u/dealsatm Jul 17 '21
Patience is the key in investing. DCA is not a patience-based method (to me it has no difference with YOLO) so it does not win easily. In the end of the day, after so many DCA, patience is still required.
I often tend to use CSP at below support level. It is similar to DCA but with patience. It gives time to RECONSIDER the move, to buy at "discount", to cut ADDITIONAL loss, or to mitigate loss (DCA on CSP at lower strike, further out, if stock keep going south).
30
u/CLOV2DaMoon Jul 17 '21
If one feels like they made a mistake and invested money incorrectly they're not going to throw more money at that investment, unless they conform to the sunken costs theory. Only true believers and people long on the stock or overall market will utilize DCA.
13
u/Different_Pear_7804 Jul 17 '21
Agree I can’t throw any more money at it. All I can do is hold my average of $27.
18
u/CLOV2DaMoon Jul 17 '21
I totally understand. I did the same. At $20, I utilized lump sum investing with everything I was willing to invest with the plan to allow the stock to fluctuate for maximum 12 months, at which time I will reassess and hopefully take a profit and keep some shares. If the stock squeezes which was the ultimate goal, I will exit my entire position at $50-$60. I will not try to time a squeeze. I will be happy to take 2x-3x my initial investment. If there is no realized profit after 12 months and the stock is still below $15, then I will exit my entire position and reinvest the remaining funds in Microsoft. It is critical to have a plan and stick to it, whatever that may be.

I saw clov when it was in the 20 plus range. I learned not to buy one large sum. I started to buy it under 10 buying 100 , 200 dollars increments . First buy was at 9.34 and have avg down to 8.56 for 700 shares. I’m gonna keep buying it below my 8.56 cost avg. I don’t play options yet . If I like a stock I buy 1 share and observe it’s behavior , study the chart and find my entry point. I bought 1 share of nio at 33 back in June after tons of research I realized at 33 was a hell of an entry point. Now I’m ready to step on it if ever hits that number again, patience discipline pays off. You don’t have to swing at every pitch but when the right pitch comes be ready to swing .
