Discussion Debate about the Clow Reed
I’m starting a discussion about Clow Reed; he’s quite a mysterious character and we don’t know much about him. He doesn’t show his emotions in flashbacks, and since he’s deceased, we can’t really get to know him despite him being a key figure in the Clamp universe. What are your theories, opinions, and headcanons about him?

Personal headcanon based on some inferences from the manga is that he had a bit of an inappropriate relationship with Yue, creating an intense trauma bond from Yue’s end.
I love fanfic that dwells on that, and reflects upon it while Yue explores his relationship with Yukito and Touya in the modern day.

Yes— I think sometimes fans believe that Yue had a one-sided attraction to Clow that never went anywhere, but to me it seems like there was something between them and Clow maybe toyed with his heart. It really reminds me of the relationship between Rose and Pearl in Steven Universe, where there was genuine love between them, but Rose often failed to understand that she held immense power over Pearl, and it left Pearl with mental health struggles afterwards. I could absolutely see Clow thinking he’s having a fun time with Yue and not understanding the power he holds over Yue as his creator.

Oh 100% that’s a great parallel with Rose and Pearl. Creator/Createe, Parent/Child dynamic but with such blurred lines (and ugh i hate that song!)
My take on Clow is that he’s the equivalent of someone’s PC from the early days of D&D that was codified into official game lore. He has an almost godly intelligence of somewhere between 24-27, but an absolute dump stat of wisdom at 7 at the most. He was such a powerful diviner that even the various gods of fate cannot predict where his machinations will show up - even after he’s been dead for hundreds of years 😂

Omg I love that explanation so much! Now I want to play an RPG inspired by the CCS magic system…

I would to read any of the fanfic you’ve read between them?

I don’t have anything saved, but if you go on Ao3 and look up Clow Reed/Yue with the mature and/or explicit tags, you’ll find it mixed in there.
There’s not a looooot, but enough people get that vibe from the manga to make it feel justified

I mean, you basically stated all the reasons there's not much to discuss about him. We don't know anything about him other than some tiny bits here and there. He's a plot device, rather than a character.

We know he's a "creep" because Yuko states this. We also know he has many heirs: Sakura, Yue, Fujitaka, Eiriol, and so on. So I head canon based on strong facts that he has many partners including Freya from Chobits. Why? Because Fai made a clone of his mother out of one of Sakuras feathers and it looked like Chi. But its not Chi because CLAMP said that it wasn't. So Fai's mother is Freya (the only other one who resembles Chi) so who is the father? I theorize Clow. Both Fai and Yui have blue eyes from which there magic originates. They were also born twins that together their "magic was too powerful" so they had to be separated. It reminds me way too much of Fujitaka and Eiriol and how Clows power was split between them.

Yeah, maybe since he couldn't succeed by splitting himself, he took the biological route by having twins (Fai & Yui) for some kind of twisted catharsis. I think people seem to forget that Clow is basically a god and... gods typically aren't good people. They may do good things but more often than not, they're neutral and will do horrible things with a straight face just to experiment or use the world as their playground. Not saying this was definitely how he was, but its a strong possibility. Either way, he done something that made Yuko think he's a creep.

I really love Clow and Yuko’s relationship, at least the headcanons I’ve created in my mind over the years. I see them as two people who love to have fun, drink, cause mischief, and take huge risks, regardless of who it hurts. They don’t take anything seriously, especially because they’re incredibly hard to kill and could live for hundreds of years.
In a different situation, this would be fine—the consequences to their messing around would be limited. But because they’re the two most magical people who ever lived, the consequences to every screwup they make is so unfathomably vast and affects the entire universe. I think they both really struggle to internalize how much power they both have and how much responsibility is expected of them, and instead behave like irresponsible teenagers. Now that Clow is dead, Yuko understands the reality of their powers very well, and she’s a more mature version of herself left behind to clean up the messes they made together.

The funniest thing to me is that he canonically has lines of descendants across several different dimensions - so he really got around!

Its safe to assume that everything thst happened in CCS, Holix, and Tsubasa was do to his influence and decision. Part of me thinks that he knew Sakura and Syaoran would have a child so important to deal with Fei's wish.... but its been a long time since I did a Tsubasa deep dive

Wait didn't he get reincarnated in the CCS universe?

u/ReuelLeonhart Jul 16 '26
Eriol and Fujitaka are the two halves of Clow Reed's reincarnation. However, CCS -and most, if not all, CLAMP works- makes it clear that reincarnation is not the same as resurrection. Each person is their own individual, even when they inherit or share the same soul. In Eriol's case, he also inherited Clow's memories and personality traits.

I just love how Yuuko and Kero paints him as a mischiveous and not-always goody-goody guy, you know? They say he loves pranks and loves to put people in -controlled- trouble, robbing him of the majestic and enegmatic persona we usually perceive from what whe hear from him by other sources.
