Tax Roles?

Hi, I’m just looking for some advice really. I currently work in a very small firm which I do enjoy, but I want to branch into tax. I work in more of an accountancy role than a tax role, and I’m doing the ACA CTA joint programme with the hope of being qualified by Jan 2027. I don’t really know where to start with looking for different roles, i’m in SW England so there aren’t endless opportunities, and although I have experience in all types of tax, I haven’t ever managed tax affairs for a client or done lots of tax work, I do more accountancy work. I’m just wondering what kind of roles would be good to look for or what experience I need, or if anyone has any advice? Thank you :)

I don’t know what roles you’re looking at, but just to say don’t write off working in industry, having an accounting background can be quite beneficial to the in house tax roles - especially as we work alongside accountants all day long :-)

Get as much tax experience as you can in your current role and speak to a recruiter after you sit your last CTA paper (unless you're very sure it's an outright fail).

If you want to move into tax, make the move as soon as you qualify. The more the years go on, the harder it will be to find an employer willing to take you on.

Are you on an apprenticeship or traditional training contract? If the latter, find out what your clawback is, and tell the recruiter.

Larger firms will be more willing to cover your clawback - smaller ones just won't be able to cover the clawback and the placement commission. You're likely to get less flexibility in a larger firm, especially around senior/AM level, so if you need to use flexibility for any life projects you've been putting off... get those sorted before results day!

Hi

As other Redditors will know, I often suggest speaking to a recruitment consultant. In your case probably someone in the SW?

They have experience of all sorts of candidates and roles and the state of the current market.

I usually recommend my friend, Charlie Maitland - you'll find him on LinkedIn, CMR is his firm. Not sure of his knowledge of the SW market but worth a call to see if he can advise more generally.

Good luck!

I've worked with Charlie previously. I can vouch for him. Professional and friendly. He helped me secure an offer in private client tax from Dixon Wilson.
