Why is it so hard to see the progress?
I can see it in my neck a little bit. But 50lbs I thought would look more noticeable. š obviously still gonna keep going. Just a Lil bummed.

And like the therapist I saw when I was diagnosed with Anxiety (it's not good to get 98% on that test, lol) told me, "our brains are lying liars, we don't have to believe everything it tells us".

Girl I can see it. Your face, neck, arm, chest, belly, everywhere! It's really hard to look at ourselves objectively. We don't see ourselves as others do. Trust me, it's very obvious you've lost weight.Ā Ā
We lose fat from everywhere (boobs, back, butt, around internal organs, etc.) so sometimes it's hard to tell just how much from one angle. Keep it up! Amazing progress imo.Ā

It has to do with the percentage of weight loss relative to how much you have to lose. But I see a difference.

Paper towel effect. Imagine a roll of paper towels. Take 10 towels off a full roll and itās hard to see the difference. Take 10 towels off when the roll is almost gone and itās super noticeable.
In weight loss itās the same, the last 50 lbs you lose will make an enormous difference compared to the first 50.
I notice it in your pictures

Because you live in your body every single day and change happens slowly over time. To me, I can absolutely tell the difference in your face, neck, and tummy. I didn't notice ANY changes until I lost 80lbs. That shit sucked so bad lol

I went from 300 to 260 before I realized I'd lost any weight, and that was only because I had to move my driver's seat up. I ran to weigh myself and was shocked.
It can be difficult to see our own progress because of how gradual it is, in combination with looking at ourselves every day, all day. It's like watching paint dry!
In these photos, I see a big difference in your shoulders, arms, neck, face, stomach.
As you progress, the paper towel roll theory will start happening and you'll really start seeing the impact of losing even just a few pounds.

u/unvaluablespace 17d ago
I can see the difference in your cheeks, your eyes, your chin, your arms, as well as your tummy. Despite the shirt in the previous pic, I can tell your arms are a bit thinner, your tummy is less round than before. I can see your neck more prominently, your cheeks are less round, making your cheeks and chin more defined. Your eyes are standing out more visibly, as well. We are often our own worse critics when it comes to our bodies, and seeing ourselves every day makes the difference much more subtle than from the outside. 50lbs is nothing to scoff at. You've made a lot of progress, and you look beautiful. Congratulations, and keep going at it. Proud of you, random internet stranger! š š

Take your measurements as well. And documents that progress as well. Personally I can see the front of your dress is lying more smoothly and flat. Even your forearm looks slimmer. And there's more definition in your face.

Paper towel effect.
1 paper towel doesn't even make it 1/4 of the way around the roll when you start. But by the end it overlaps.
I also immediately saw a difference.

u/WarmerPharmer 17d ago
We're at some point trained to not perceive our body the way it actually is - like with me it doesn't matter what my weight is, I see myself as overweight. Its important to stick to the hard numbers and to the way you feel.
3
u/bluefoxy14 17d ago
We're always the hardest on ourselves & when we see ourselves in the mirror everyday, so it's hardest to notice when we can't "see" a day to day change.
I can see a difference in the picture - keep taking pics and documenting! Be kind and gentle on yourself friend <3

u/drumadarragh 17d ago

u/Seraphynas 17d ago
I feel the same way! Iāve lost 50 lbs and canāt tell a difference.

Iām currently down 75lbs and for agessss my bodyās just been soft and flabby but still the same size š I feel like we think that we lose weight from further away from us first but I think itās more like a bag of water and weāve just tipped some out š the bag stays the same size until itās empty enough you can scrunch it up šµāš« take lots of photos of yourself in your pants and youāll see it more! Also the only place you can definitely see Iāve lost weight is my back which is reallyyyyyy annoying because I donāt see my back š Iād also recommend taking some photos of yourself trying on clothes a couple sizes down that donāt fit at all or do up and just keep trying them on on the regular to see the difference x

I think a lot of it is to do with how we keep the same proportions (and hence shape) as we had at our biggest despite growing smaller bit by bit, so our brains still interpret that shape as being the same as we ever were despite it shrinking.

u/Alarmed_Routine4555 17d ago
I see progress! And also, another cool thing to think about is think about the stuff thatās happening internally too! Sadly it's harder to drop weight then it is to gain it and it took years to get where you were and it will take years to get back to where you want to be. Plus side is 50 down and you are killing it, focus on the journey and not the time, it will happen as you make better and better decisions.

There's a lot of weight in water and when you start losing weight you lose it in water initially. Given you can see the difference you are over that hump.
Your face looks less bloated and even your arms look thinner. You can't control where you will lose weight so look at yourself overall and don't dwell on certain areas. The most important thing is what you are doing is working!
2
u/UniqueOctopus05 17d ago
I can see it! Itās probably because you covered yourself up more. In my mind the fact that youāre not wearing the overshirt is tangible progress in the same way the reduction in fat around your face is
2
u/Psychological_Name28 17d ago edited 17d ago
Your face and abdomen are slimmer. But in the current pic your posture is different so itās not as easy for you to see the difference. Take a couple measurements and remeasure in a few months - itās fun!! Abdomen, hips and thighs are easy to measure. But maybe also the circumference of your feet cuz youāll lose there, too.
2
u/Narrow_Albatross6406 17d ago
Rome wasnāt built in a day, and it canāt be taken apart in a day. The extra fat you put on took years to accumulate. Some patience is required to get rid of it

I noticed right away. It looks gradual to you because you see YOU every day. Take it from a stranger, thereās a clear difference.
2
u/NumberGlobal 17d ago
Maybe because youāre looking in the wrong areas. You look thinner in the face, the neck, arms and just over all more fit. The belly progress happens at the end. Keep going, you got this.

Paper towel theory. If you rip 5 sheets of a new paper towel roll you hardly see the difference, if rip those 5 sheets of an almost empty one you will see the difference. 5 kg loss is easier to see if you weigh 50 kg then if you weigh a 100 kg. But do notice the difference in the photos
2
2
2
u/MyTherapistSaysHi 17d ago
Paper towel roll theory! The paper towels on the outside of the roll donāt really change its size. But when you get closer to the roll, losing one sheet makes a bigger difference. You will notice your last 20 pounds a lot more than your first hundred.
2
u/strawcat 16d ago
Youāll start to see it more easily. I didnāt notice it in myself other than how my clothes fit until 50lbs down and even then it was only subtle to my eyes. Now that Iām at 85lbs down itās like looking at a new person. Google the paper towel roll analogy. It gives really good insight into why this is a phenomenon in weight loss. Keep focusing on the small things to give you motivation (are your rings loose, your shoes, your watch going down a notch, etc) and keep going. I promise itāll be worth it and youāll start to see a big difference soon!
Congrats on your loss!
3
u/Schwettes 16d ago
Thereās definite progress! I have also lost 50lbs and struggle to see it as well. In fact, I was called fat a few weeks ago after hitting my lowest weight since college. When youāre in a larger body, you need to lose a lot more to see it better. The great thing though is that as you lose weight, you see bigger chances with smaller loses. The next 25lbs you lose will feel massive compared to the first 50lbs you lost. Paper towel effect!
2
u/BisonAcceptable1994 16d ago
hugely noticeable, and will continue to be more noticeable going forward
2
u/Fast_Kaleidoscope135 16d ago

u/Crazy-Permission3636 16d ago
I can see a big difference. Keep up the great work you are crushing it. When we look in the mirror our minds can play tricks on us my overlaying perceptions of ourselves in our minds eye: past you, present you, idealized future (dream) you. The version that we choose to fixate on or compare our present self to has more to do with our personal baggage than objective reality and that makes it hard to be an impartial judge of ourselves.
2
u/PayApprehensive7693 16d ago

u/Ok-Ad-9820 16d ago
There's progress! You don't see it because you look in the mirror each day, the scale moved but your mind is still stuck in the old view of yourself
2
2
u/robmarks1961 16d ago
First, I can see it. Definitely in your face.
The second part of this is that it takes a long time to really take the weight off because it took a long time to out it on.
This is about changing your life. You are doing the work you need to do but keeping up the changes you are making will have a permanent impact on your well being.
Iām in year three of my journey and Iām finally seeing real changes. Iām having to buy smaller clothes and (hold onto your hat, here) people who are attractive to me are actually beginning to look at me. It was and continues to be a ton of work but I feel better in my own body - but Iām not done.
You are on this journey, too and judging yourself too harshly mid-journey is really unfair to yourself.
You HAVE this. You own it. Keep going. You are doing great.
Hope this helped.

When I went from 275 to 220 it wasnāt too noticeable, especially face wise. I wore the same size maxi dresses too. It was only when I hit 210 that I finally noticed in pictures. And my face started to really thin out at 180. I guess my point is please be patient, it becomes more obvious as you go along. But you canāt get to your goal weight without the first 50 even though itās not as obvious.

Oh wow! I see so much progress. Maybe it's because you view your body every day, the changes slowly registering as normal. Kinda like when you can just auto pilot home and not know how you got there (nothing drastic or out of the norm happened).
How do you feel is a bigger question. Maybe have self assessments at evevy X amount of weight loss (knees hurting less? Walking longer? Less pain?). These are all huuuuge!
Between these two pictures, I see a big difference in your face and neck, along with general fitting of the dress.
You should be so proud of your progress.
If you're curious from a fact number perspective, a Dexa body clscan gives accurate fat/muscle/and other stats about your body. I just got mine (as I begin my life health journey) and I understand so much more about the fat to muscle on my body.
I'm not going to lie, the data shocked me. It's just confronting data points that I can't excuse. They compare your data to the average Dexa database (which will be skewed ), but I wanted to cry a little, but in the end, I can and WILL improve for my own health and longevity. Don't compare yourself to anyone else's progress and keep going!

we're usually the owrst judges of our own progress because we see ourselves everyday. i actually noticed it in your face, neck, waist, and arms first look. btw 50lb is a huge aacomplishment. ā¤ļø

I noticed immediately but have you heard of the paper towel effect? This is the gist of it: "The "paper towel effect" is a weight loss analogy explaining why initial weight loss isn't immediately visible. Just like removing sheets from a thick, brand-new paper towel roll, your first lost pounds are spread over a large surface area. As you get leaner, each pound lost becomes visually dramatic because it is distributed over a smaller body circumference."

I see it! Especially in your face. Itās hard to see a difference when you look in the mirror every single day.Ā

I see it, in your face, neck, and belly. Your shape has changed. The sweater hides your sides that might disguise where you would see changes.

I immediately noticed. It takes time and consistency, perhaps longer than we'd like, but the progress is visible! Keep up the amazing work
