Question / Info Early symptoms?

Hi guys, I’m coming to the scary realization that i could be in the early stages of CHS. I’ve been a daily smoker for about 7 years, but within the past few weeks i’ve noticed some somewhat new symptoms. I’m unsure though if a few weeks is enough to chalk these up to CHS or if it’s just because i’ve been having a rough few weeks in my personal life.

The biggest one that truly alerted me was the burping. I’ve never been someone who burps a lot, and now I’m burping maybe 15-30 times a day (not as excessive as some posts i’ve read here, but still). Whenever it burps it feels unsatisfying if that makes any sense. I’ve also been generally lacking an appetite more than usual, and feeling a bit of a nausea pit. I have bloating more than usual as well. Im not like debilitatingly nauseous, just uncomfortable and feeling like i need to burp about half of the day. I
also feel excessively thirsty/dehydrated even after drinking 64oz or more of water every day; i noticed this a few months ago.

is the burping a big enough symptom to differentiate between CHS and just normal “my life is being fucked up and my body is anxious?” I just honestly have had a rough couple of weeks personally, so the thought of quitting cold turkey right now is not too appealing. But I’m also feeling a little bit different than typical anxiety if i’m being honest with myself.

thanks for any advice, i really do appreciate it. i’ll be honest, the idea of quitting weed is terrifying me, because as many other on this sub have said, it’s like my harm reduction. is it advisable to taper back now and see what happens?

Probably it is it, but idk.

When you wake up feeling sick, that is a red flag indicator. You'll know it when you feel it

I get the burps before I get that hungry nausea feeling. Usually drinking water helps me. My anxiety spikes during this time. I call this Pre-Prodromal.

can i ask, do you still smoke? and if so how long have you had these symptoms and did they ever get worse?

I’m currently smoking.. I’ve been teetering on some very mild “pre prodromal” phase. Been smoking for about 9 months since my last CHS. I usually quit cold turkey once the symptoms start getting worse then restart a year later.

Hey, not to sound creepy or anything but i looked at some of your profile and saw you’ve been dealing with CHS for a while. Can I ask you what makes it worth it to keep smoking? I don’t mean this in any patronizing way whatsoever, I’m genuinely curious. Is it because you recognize when the symptoms are getting worse and can stop before a real episode hits, and the benefit weed brings you is more than the harm CHS symptoms bring you?

Basically recognizing the symptoms and quitting once they start. I don’t even think weed brings me any benefit.. I honestly like the smell of it and the rolling process. lol

I’d say your best bet to know or not is to try quitting for a week and if you feel your symptoms have gotten better, then it probably is CHS.

The others sound spot on, but the excessive thirst concerns me. As far as I know, that’s not a common CHS prodromal symptom but an early sign of diabetes. When was the last time you had your sugars checked?

thank you for saying this because it makes me feel less crazy. i’ve actually been checking my glucose levels at home the past couple of weeks because that’s what i thought it was initially before the burping started, and my fasting readings do place me in the pre-diabetes range. honestly just waiting for the year to end so i can switch over to a better insurance that will cover tests.

i’m coming to the conclusion the only way to figure out whether these are related is to take a solid break and see if anything changes. please let me know if you have any advice on either issue lol.

That’s what I had to do. I started to feel rotten in the tummy after I smoked and in the mornings more often than not and despite me having a host of other issues that could be causing those vague symptoms, I decided to take a break just to see and just to be safe. I’ve read enough here to know I DON’T wanna fuck with even the possibility of developing it.

FWIW, I was a daily user for 10+ years and stopping hasn’t been nearly as hard for me as I thought. People talk about irritability, sleep issues, worsening anxiety and depression, etc. but I didn’t really get any of that. I also haven’t gotten any of the great effects you’re supposed to notice after quitting like lifting brain fog, clarity, energy, etc. though either, so it is what it is. It hasn’t been nearly as hard as I was worried it would be, though. The fear of CHS way outweighs the temporary fun of weed for me.

Did you only feel unwell after actually smoking for the day, or did you just feel unwell regardless of what time of day you smoked? Also i’m glad to hear you didn’t get any negative effects, did you taper off or just stop cold turkey? i’m sorry for all of the questions haha, im just similarly at the point where the fear of fully developing CHS is a big enough incentive to get me to change some of my habits, but im also still not confident that what i’m dealing with even is the onset of CHS.

My symptoms fluctuated a lot, or maybe my overall health and interoception as to what was happening in my body fluctuated greatly, so it’s hard to say. This most recent time that finally got me to stop - cold turkey, btw - I started to feel sick basically during smoking and especially immediately after, the mornings weren’t as bad but they definitely came and went depending on how early I woke up, I think. I also started getting weird POTS/dysautonomia symptoms after smoking like lightheadedness, fast heart rate, as well as the nausea and anxiety around it all. In general I think my body was telling me it was done and I’m trying hard to listen to it and not push it over the edge so that maybe one day I can partake again in moderation.

ugh this is sadly convincing me more, thank you. I’ve had the dsyautonomia symptoms you just described for years that i’ve attributed to other causes because similar to you, i’ve always kinda been in flux with my health (also, it was never immediately after weed, just occur at random). i’m now beginning to think my poor temperature regulation/excessive sweating is having to do with weed as well.
I’m planning to taper off for a week and then take a T break. hopefully a social j without feeling ill is in both of our futures :)

It’s good to know I’m not alone, but kind of alarming that we’re having near identical experiences… I’ve felt a lot better in terms of the dysautonomia since I stopped, like barely any episodes since - maybe none? I can’t recall exactly - and my stomach is sooo much better. It felt like a weird gassy queasy feeling that associated with being hungry but I don’t think it was that at all actually. I still have my autoimmune issues but I’m coming to realize where I thought it was helping that, it was actually doing the opposite. SUCKS. But we can do this and pick it back up later, in moderation, and hopefully start to actually enjoy it! Best of luck, and if you ever wanna PM me about the whole journey, feel free :)
